PROPOSAL:
1) Minimum radius of fillet of 3mm in para. 306.4.1(c) is not in line with the latest edition of
ASME B16.9 Table 6.1-9.
2) The ASME B16.5 tables referenced in paragraph 308.2.1 are incorrect

Blast Loads on Pipe
Proposal: Revise paragraph 301.5.1 by moving accidental blast loads to a separate
paragraph with engineering design.
Explanation and Background: This proposal revises the wording in TN 15‐1702,
(B‐13‐05) that was approved for publication in the 2022 B31.3 Code. The reason
for the revision is that when the expression “when specified in engineering
design” precedes “impact forces …” this indicates the designer is only required to
consider such impact forces when in the engineering design. This unintentionally
weakens the current code as the designer should consider impact forces
regardless of being specified (or not) in the engineering design.
On the next page, the approved for publication 2022 code wording is shown.
Then, the new proposed changes to this 2022 approved wording is shown with
red underlines for additions and red strike thru for deletions. Additionally, para
301.5.1 for the current B31.3‐2018 code is shown for your information.

301.5.1 Impact. When specified in engineering design, impact forces
caused by external or internal conditions (including changed in flow rate,
hydraulic shock, liquid or solid slugging, flashing, geysering, and accidental blast)
shall be taken into account in the design of piping. See Appendix F, para.
F301.5.1.
Proposed Revision
301.5.1 Impact.
(a) When specified in engineering design,,iImpact forces caused by external
or internal conditions (including changed in flow rate, hydraulic shock, liquid or
solid slugging, flashing, and geysering, and accidental blast) shall be taken into
account in the design of piping.
(b) When specified in engineering design, impact forces caused by
accidental blast loads shall be taken into account.
(c) See Appendix F, para. F301.5.1.
