REACH THE WORLD AND TOUCH A HEART, ELDERLY WELFARE AND

SUPPORT PROJECT.
INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND
Everybody needs hope and everybody needs love indeed. But not all have the experience of the
beauty of love and hope. Being in a chain of poverty, many of the families experience loss of
love and hope. Children are left alone and homeless struggling with their grandparents in the
village. Many are the difficult times they pass through. Their grandparents are the only hopes left
for them. As we grow, we become physically unfit. This is not observed by many in the villages
as such growing up grows together with responsibilities. The older they become and the weaker
they are never match with the responsibilities they carry.
As a country we are fighting hard towards a zero hunger campaign, good sanitation facilities and
quality education for all just to mention a few of the development goals. These children are not
well exposed to such a condition of experience and understanding what it means by all this.
Under the care of their grandparents, through the struggles they pass through seeing their
grandparents struggling to take care of them have no meaning to shape them as best future
leaders.
Among many areas facing this challenge here in Malawi, Chadza is one of the areas I have paid
much attention where all these observations are currently happening and increasing at higher
pace. I have been working within the area for over seven years since (2017-2024) now. I came to
know the area through the charity works visits organized by Bright Vision Orphan Care
Community Based Organization every month ends throughout the year. In the year 2022, I
decided to conduct my research on why this CBO operates in this area. I spent a month at Ngala
Village of Group Village Chamadenga where the CBO’s offices are located. I paid much
attention t understand how the CBO source its orphans to support. Every morning I could hear
knocks on office door where I was sleeping and these could elders I mean the old aged seeking
help for the children in their homes.
I could observed other elders who are failing to cover long distances due to their inabilities to
walk waiting along the roads to share their challenges with the Director of the CBO (Stanly
Chapota). Sometimes they could approach me directly and ask me if I can talk for them to the
CBO officials so that they can be helped. At some point I had to visit a group called Zotheka ndi
Mlengi. This group is composed of old aged only but all have disabilities. Others do not walk,
others do not see and others do not even hear or speak. They formed a union so that they
empower each other emotionally. The family visits I conducted gave me an experience of
meeting many children under the CBO support but are staying with their grandparents. Many of
their biological have traveled to towns for green pastures. With economic challenges the country
is experiencing, these people are failing to fully support their families left in the villages.
In the same year 2022 (September –November), I had another chance to do my internship with
SOS Children’s Village Malawi, Lilongwe Family Strengthening Program. This is one the
organization operating in the area in hand with other CBOs including Bright Vision CBO. This
organization in service with organized activities that are designed to address specific needs of
children and/or their families. The main services provided by SOS in the area typically include
SOS family care, family strengthening and sometimes also other care options. Thanks to the
coming of SOS because many families have been supported. Although SOS is doing this good
job in the area as well as Bright Vision CBO, all of them are focused on Children’s welfare.
Despite having a little kind of observations that the elders are being involved but it is not
directly to meeting their needs. These old aged are involved as guardians hence are lacking
a program that will directly meet their needs as well fare support. This project comes to pay
full attention and directly meet the old aged welfare and support because being old aged is not
optional but nature and we or they are all heading there.
