Mit ihrer weiß schimmernden Dachkrone ist die Kirche Seliger
Pater Rupert Mayer zum neuen Wahrzeichen von Poing gewor­
den, einer Gemeinde etwa 20 km östlich von München. Auf den
geschosshohen Sockel aus Nagelfluh, einem Konglomeratge­
stein der oberbayerischen Schotterebene, ist eine weiße Dach­
skulptur aufgesetzt, die in der Aufsicht viergeteilt ist und von
einer Stahlkonstruktion getragen wird. Ein homogenes Kleid
aus rund 15 000 plastisch geformten Keramikkacheln verleiht
dem Dach eine kristalline Anmutung. Mit ihren unterschiedlich
ge­neig­ten Flächen ist die Form der glasierten Kacheln an die
Dachform angelehnt und erzeugt eine vielfache, sich je nach
Tageslicht verändernde Lichtbrechung. Mit Ausnahme von
­flachen Keramikplatten in den Randbereichen wurde immer
­derselbe Kacheltyp verwendet; durch Drehung um 90, 180 und
270 Grad entsteht jedoch eine lebendig strukturierte Oberfläche.
Als prägnanter Solitär liegt die neue Kirche gut sichtbar
an der Hauptstraße von Poing in unmittelbarer Nähe zu Bürger­
haus, evangelischer Kirche und künftigem neuen Rathaus. Hier
entsteht ein neues Ortszentrum, das die Gemeinde in S-Bahn-
Nähe entwickelt, um dem stetigen Einwohnerzuwachs gerecht
zu werden. Der Bauplatz war schon lange für die katholische
­Kirche reserviert, doch die Entscheidung für den Neubau fiel erst
2008. Er ergänzt die bestehende Pfarrkirche St. Mi­cha­el im alten

Rupert Mayer has become a new landmark in Poing, a munici-
pality some 20 km east of Munich. The sculptural form of the
roof is set on top of a storey-height plinth of conglomerate
stone from the Munich gravel plain. Seen on plan, the roof is
divided into four sections which are borne by a steel structure.
The homogeneous outer skin of this crowning element, con-
sisting of roughly 15,000 ceramic tiles with distinct profiles,
lends the roof a crystalline appearance. The differently angled
surfaces of the glazed tiles echo the form of the roof itself
and result in a diffraction of light that changes according
to daylight conditions. With the exception of the flat tiles
used in peripheral areas, the same type was applied through-
out, but the various angles of the tiles create an animated,
­textured  surface.
This striking, free-standing new church is clearly visible in
the high street of Poing and is situated in close proximity to the
community centre, the Protestant church and the future new
town hall. Here, a modern municipal centre is developing near
the urban railway to meet the needs of the constantly growing
population. The site had long been reserved for the Roman
Catholic church, but a decision in favour of the present building

Ortskern, die weiterhin genutzt wird. Auf dem Grundstück im
neuen Zentrum entstanden 1992 bereits ein Pfarrheim mit Ge­
meinderäumen sowie ein Kindergarten. Ursprüng­lich sollte zu
dem Ensemble auch noch ein Pfarrhaus hinzukommen, doch
die Realisierung wurde auf unbestimmte Zeit verschoben.
Wie selbstverständlich fügt sich die neue Kirche in die
gegebene Situation ein: einerseits als sensibles Gegenüber zu
dem bestehenden Pfarrheim, andererseits als raumbildender
Stadtbaustein mit einem Vorplatz zur Straße hin. Hier befindet
sich auch der Haupteingang: Die Besucher gelangen unter der
Empore hindurch in den Kirchenraum, in dem sich schlichte
Holzbänke blockweise um die liturgische Mitte der Altarinsel
gruppieren. Die Aufgänge zur Empore sind in den doppelscha­
ligen Wänden versteckt. Innen setzt sich die Zweiteilung von
Sockel und Dach fort: Die unteren Wandbereiche wie auch der
Boden sind mit großformatigen Nagelfluhblöcken mit sichtbaren
Kieseinschlüssen ausgekleidet; darüber erhebt sich die weiße,
abstrakte Dachskulptur als zum Himmel strebender Raum aus
Licht. Große Öffnungen prägen den Raum und unterstützen
durch ihre jeweilige Lichtführung die liturgischen Orte und
Handlungen: Das Licht der vertikalen Zenitöffnung über dem
höchsten Punkt der Kirche trifft auf Altar und Tabernakel, ein

existing parish church of St Michael, which is located in the old
town centre and is still in use. As early as 1992, a parish hall was
built on the site of the new centre with community spaces and a
kindergarten. Originally, a presbytery was also planned as part
of this ensemble, but its implementation has been postponed
indefinitely.
Integrated quite naturally in the existing environment, the
new church forms a sensitive counterpoint to the parish hall
and is a space-defining urban object with a forecourt that
opens on to the road. Here, the main entrance is located, with
access to the church beneath a raised gallery. Internally, rows
of simple wooden benches are grouped around the liturgical
focus, the altar island. The stairs to the gallery are concealed
between double outer walls. The division between plinth and
roof is continued internally, where the lower areas of the walls,
as well as the floor, are finished with large blocks of conglom-
erate stone in which pebbles are visibly embedded. Rising
above this is the white, abstract roof sculpture with a spire of
light reaching up to heaven. One feature of this space are the
large openings, which accentuate the liturgical focal points
and activities. Light from the zenith opening falls on the altar
and tabernacle, while the place of baptism is illuminated from
