Das ehemalige Klostergebäude und der in Kupferblech gehüllte
Erweiterungsbau bilden eine neue Einheit mit eindrucksvoller
poetischer Aura. Zusammen beherbergen sie die „Maison
­Territoire“, ein Kulturzentrum mit Bibliothek, Mediathek, Aus­
stellungs- und Eventbereichen. Die Kubatur des Neubaus ent­
spricht dem einstigen nördlichen Klostertrakt und macht so das
alte Franziskanerkloster Saint-François de Sainte-Lucie de
Tallano räumlich wieder erlebbar. Das Ensemble aus Kirche und
Klostertrakt entstand Ende des 15. Jahrhunderts am Rand eines
Bergdorfs im Süden Korsikas. Auf die Säkularisation folgten
zunächst wechselnde weltliche Nutzungen und anschließend
ein langer Leerstand. 1980 wurden die Kirche und der Rest des
verfallenden Klostergebäudes unter Denkmalschutz gestellt.
Bei der Restaurierung des Bestandsbaus stand der Erhalt
und die Sicherung der verbliebenen historischen Granitmauern
und Ziegelgewölbe im Mittelpunkt. Neu hinzugekommen sind

hier lediglich Fenster, Türen und einige Sitzbänke in Eichenholz
sowie ein Dachgeschossausbau, während haustechnische
Anlagen und die Vertikalerschließung im Erweiterungsbau
untergebracht sind.
Die Gebäudehülle des asketisch-schlichten Neubaus ist
gegenüber dem Bestandsbau leicht nach innen versetzt.
­Sämt­liche Oberflächen sind dabei mit Kupferblech überzogen –
die Fassaden und Dachflächen ebenso wie die Verlängerung
des alten Kreuzgangs. Kupfer wurde vor allem aus zwei Grün­
den gewählt. Zum einen wird Kupfer ebenso wie der Granit der
­Klostermauern in der Region seit Jahrhunderten zum Bauen
verwendet, sodass die haptisch zwar völlig verschiedenen,
­farblich aber gut harmonierenden Materialien die gleiche
Ursprünglichkeit ausstrahlen. Zum anderen sind beide Bau­
stoffe sehr robust und dauerhaft. Außerdem sind sie in der
Lage, in Würde zu altern.

The former monastery and its expansion clad in sheet copper
constitute a new, unified building that displays an impressively
poetic aura. Combined they house the “Maison Territoire” –
a ­cultural centre with library, media centre, exhibition areas
and event spaces. Its cubage corresponds to the former
­northern tract of the monastery. As a result, the old convent of
Saint-François in Sainte-Lucie-de-Tallano once more permits
spatially experiencing it. The ensemble comprising church
and cloister tract was built in the late 15th century along the
fringes of a mountain village in Corsica’s south. Following
­secularization, changing worldly functions succeeded each
other. Eventually, longer-term vacancy set in. In 1980 the church
and the remainder of the deteriorating monastery became an
historically listed building.
The restoration of the existing building was focussed on
maintaining and securing the remaining historic granite walls and
vaulted brick ceilings. New additions were limited to windows,
doors, a number of oak benches and a newly created rooftop
floor. Building services equipment and vertical access are
located inside the expansion.
The building envelope of the new structure with its asceti-
cally simple appeal is slightly set back from the exterior surface
of the existing building. All surfaces are clad in sheet copper
with a thickness of 1 mm – facades, roof surfaces, as well as
the extension of the old cloister. Copper was selected mostly
for two reasons. First, similar to the granite of the monastery
walls, copper has been used for construction in the region for
centuries. In tactile terms, the two materials are completely
­different, while their colours harmonize well and radiate a simi-
larly primordial character. Second, both construction materials
are very robust and durable. Beyond that, they have the capac-
ity to age gracefully.

Die vorgefertigen Kupferpaneele wurden als Vorhangfassade
montiert. Im Sockelbereich der dreigeschossigen Straßenfas­
sade kamen nur glatte Paneele zum Einsatz, während die Ele­
mente der oberen Bereiche sowie die Hoffassade größtenteils
mit leicht versetzten Quadraten perforiert sind. Deren Kanten­
länge nimmt von unten nach oben schrittweise von 50 bis auf
110 mm zu. So entstehen verschiedene Transparenzgrade
sowie lebhafte Licht- und Schattenspiele. Zugleich erhalten die
ganz in Weiß gehaltenen Innenräume dadurch viel Tageslicht.
Als Zeichen des Respekts gegenüber dem Kloster konzi­
pierte Tavella den Neubau als reversibles Bauwerk. Das ver­
schraubte Stahltragwerk ist bei Bedarf ebenso leicht rückbau­
bar wie die Fassade. Der frühere Bauzustand kann so jederzeit
wiederhergestellt werden. Dies ist zwar nicht geplant, sämtliche
zukünftigen Umbau- oder Sanierungsarbeiten werden dadurch
aber erheblich vereinfacht. RP
The prefabricated copper panels were installed as a curtain wall
facade. In the pedestal area of the three-storey street facade,
only smooth panels were used. Those arranged along the upper
floors and the courtyard facade feature, for the most part, slightly
offset square perforations. Their size increases step by step from
50 mm at the bottom to 110 mm at the top. This leads to different
degrees of transparency, in addition to a lively interplay of light
and shadow. At the same time, the completely white interiors
receive ample daylight.
Tavella demonstrates respect towards the monastery by
designing the new expansion as a reversible building. The steel
load bearing structure with its bolted connections permits disas-
sembly as required, just as the facade. The previous building
condition can, thus, be recreated at any time. While this is not
actually intended to occur, all future renovation or rehabilitation
work becomes significantly easier. RP
