Mit Blick ins Grüne und auf den Eiffelturm: Ab 1934
residierte Le Corbusier im 16. Arrondissement in
Paris. Das achtgeschossige Stahlbetongebäude in
der rue Nungesser-et-Coli 24 hatte er für einen priva-
ten Entwickler geplant. In den beiden obersten Eta-
gen richtete er sein Studio samt der Wohnung für
sich und seine Frau Yvonne ein. Nach der denkmal-
schutzgerechten Sanierung durch die Fondation Le
Corbusier ist das Studio-Apartment nun als Museum
zugänglich. Ein Besuch des Wohnateliers, das seit
1972 als Unesco-Welterbe gelistet ist, lohnt sich.
Mit großzügigen Verglasungen öffnen sich die
hellen Räume auf die Umgebung und gehen fließend
ineinander über. Das Atelier ist auf der Stadtseite des
Kontinuums mit insgesamt 240 m2 Fläche angeord-

­arrondissement in Paris starting in 1934. He
designed the eight-storey reinforced concrete
­building at 24, rue Nungesser-et-Coli for a private
developer. On the top two floors, he set up his studio
and apartment for himself and his wife Yvonne.
Following restoration by Fondation Le Corbusier,
the studio apartment is now accessible as a
museum. Listed as a Unesco World Heritage Site
since 1972, it is well worth the visit.
Light-filled rooms with generous glazing open
up to the surroundings and flow smoothly into one
another, creating a continuous space covering
240 square metres. The art studio is located on

len Eingangszone führt eine Wendeltreppe ohne
Geländer zum Gästezimmer und auf den Dachgar-
ten. Zur Hofseite erschließt ein schmaler Korridor das
Zimmer der Hausangestellten und die Küche. Sie ist
mit einem raumstrukturierenden Einbaumöbel aus-
gestattet, das alle Funktionen aufnimmt – damals in
den 1930er-Jahren eine radikale Neuerung.
Leuchtende Wandfarben in Rot, Azurblau und
Gelb geben den Wohnbereichen mit Deckenober­
flächen aus Eichenfurnier einen jeweils eigenen
­Charakter. Farblich davon abgesetzt sind einzelne
Nischen sowie der Kamin und ein Servicelift. Im
Schlafzimmer des Ehepaars Jeanneret wird Le
­Corbusiers Begeisterung für Kreuzfahrtschiffe offen-
sichtlich: Die beiden Bäder sind wie Kojen ohne
Türen mit dem Raum verbunden. Das ungewöhnlich
hohe Bett ist an der Kopfseite in der Wand verankert
und thront auf einem Stahlgestell mit zwei langen
Beinen. So konnte der Blick vom Bett aus ungestört
über die Brüstung der vorgelagerten Loggia in den
Park des Bois de Boulogne schweifen.
Bis zu seinem Tod 1965 wohnte und arbeitete
Le Corbusier in der rue Nungesser-et-Coli. „Ein
­paradiesisches Zuhause, weil Alles aus Himmel und
Licht, aus Raum und Einfachheit besteht“, wie er die
Räume in einem Brief beschrieb.

case without railings leads from the apartment’s
main entrance area up to the guest room and the
rooftop garden. On the ­courtyard side, a narrow
­corridor leads to the housekeeper’s room and
the kitchen. The latter is equipped with built-in
­functional furniture – a radical innovation at the
time in the 1930s.
Brightly painted walls, in red, azure blue or
­yellow, give the different living spaces individual
flair; the ceilings are finished off with oak veneer
­panels. Individual niches as well as the fireplace and
a service lift are painted in contrasting colours. Le
Corbusier’s enthusiasm for cruise liners is evident
in the master bedroom, which is connected to two
­separate bathrooms without doors, like cabins on a
ship. Enthroned on a tall steel frame, the head of the
bed is anchored to the wall. Its exceptional height
enabled an uninteruppted view from the bed over
the balustrade of the loggia, into the park of Bois de
Boulogne park.
Le Corbusier lived and worked in his studio
apartment at rue Nungesser-et-Coli until his death in
1965. As he once described the space in a letter, it
was “A home that is heavenly, because everything is
sky and light, of space and simplicity.”
