Was passiert mit Architekturikonen, die in die Jahre
gekommen sind? Wie lassen sich die Gebäude an
die Nutzung und Energiestandards anpassen, ohne
ihre architektonische Strahlkraft zu gefährden? Der
Bücherturm in Gent ist eines der letzten Werke von
Henry van de Velde (1883–1957) und bis heute ein
Wahrzeichen der flämischen Universitätsstadt. 1933
wurde der belgische Architekt mit dem Neubau der
zentralen Universitätsbibliothek auf einem hochgele-

(Book Tower) in Ghent is one of
the last works by Henry van de
Velde (1883–1957) and is a land-
mark of the Flemish university
city. In 1933, the Belgian archi-
tect was commissioned to de-
sign the central library of the Uni-
versity of Ghent, including its in-
terior, on an elevated site in the
city centre. Since its completion
in 1954, his 64 m-high concrete
tower has served as a symbol of

genen Innenstadtgrundstück beauftragt. Sein 64 m
hoher Bücherturm aus Eisenbeton heißt auf Flä-
misch „Boekentoren“ und ist seit seiner Fertigstel-
lung 1954 ein modernes Wahrzeichen, das sich zwi-
schen die drei mächtigen mittelalterlichen Kirch-
türme in die Skyline von Gent fügt. Zu seinen Füßen
legt sich ein flaches, bis zu dreigeschossiges
Gebäude um einen großzügigen Innenhof. Während
die Bücher vertikal im Turm gestapelt sind, breiten
sich die Büros und Lesesäle der Bibliothek horizon-
tal in weitläufigen und lichtdurchfluteten Raumfluch-
ten aus. Insgesamt fasst der Gebäudekomplex über
20 000 m2 Fläche. Über drei Millionen Objekte befin-
den sich in den Sammlungen der Bibliothek, darun-
ter auch historische Manuskripte und Grafiken.
Update für ein Gesamtkunstwerk
Robbrecht en Daem Architecten aus Gent konnten
die Open Call-Ausschreibung des Vlaams Bouw-
meesters in einem interdisziplinären Team mit
­SumProjects, Baro sowie Barbara van der Wee für
sich entscheiden. Das war 2006, und wenn Paul
Robbrecht heute durch die Räume der wieder eröff-
neten Universitätsbibliothek streift, dann blitzen
seine Augen vor Freude. „Dieses Projekt ist Teil
­meines Lebens“, sagt er lächelnd. Seit 17 Jahren ist
der Architekt mit der Sanierung und Transformation
modernity, finding its place in
Ghent’s skyline among the city’s
three mighty church towers from
the Middle Ages. Situated at the
tower’s base is a flat, three-sto-
rey building that wraps around a
spacious courtyard. While the
books are stacked vertically in
the tower, the library’s offices
and reading rooms in the lower
structure spread out horizontally
in spacious, light-flooded corri-
dors. The complex covers a total
area of more than 20,000 m 2. The
library’s collections contain over
three million objects, including
historical manuscripts and prints.
Update for a total work of art
Robbrecht en Daem Architecten
from Ghent won the open call is-
sued by Vlaams Bouwmeester
(Flemish Government Architect),
forming an interdisciplinary team
with SumProjects, Baro, and Bar-
bara Van der Wee. That was in
2006 – and when Paul Robbrecht
wanders through the rooms of
the reopened university library to-
day, his eyes sparkle with joy.
“This project is part of my life,” he
says with a smile. For 17 years,
the architect has been busy with
the renovation and transformation
of the historic building complex,
with more tasks yet to be com-
pleted. Over the years, Robbrecht
and his team have become ex-
perts in Van de Velde’s total work
of art. Their carefully planned in-
terventions are barely visible, yet
are essential from many aspects.
For example, the porous concrete
layer covering the facades was
scraped off and replaced. New
building technology remains hid-
den under the restored surfaces.
The entire building has been up-
graded in terms of climate tech-
nology and fire protection stand-
ards. A subterranean three-storey
air-conditioned repository was
built under the courtyard to pre-
serve the collections’ valuable

des historischen Gebäudekomplexes beschäftigt –
und noch immer gibt es Aufgaben, die warten. Über
die Jahre wurden er und sein Team zu Spezialisten
des Van de Velde-Gesamtkunstwerks. Sorgfältig
planten sie wirkungsvolle Interventionen, die kaum
sichtbar und doch unter vielen Aspekten essenziell
sind. So wurde die poröse Betonschicht der Fassa-
den abgeschabt und ersetzt. Die neue Gebäude-
technik bleibt unter den restaurierten Oberflächen
verborgen. Das gesamte Gebäude ist klima- und
brandschutztechnisch ertüchtigt. Für wertvolle Doku-
mente der Sammlungen wurde unter dem Innenhof
ein klimatisiertes dreigeschossiges Depot eingerich-
tet. Der neue Eingangspavillon entzerrt die Besu-
cherströme und führt direkt zum Café sowie zu den
digitalen Arbeitsplätzen. Er sieht so aus, als ob er
schon immer dagewesen wäre.
Art Deco oder Moderne?
Durch den behutsamen Rückbau der Architekten
sind die raffinierten Gestaltungsdetails von Van de
Velde wieder sichtbar geworden. Das geometrische
Muster der Böden aus belgischem Marmor spiegelt
sich an den Decken wider. Ein ruhiger Rhythmus aus
Fensteröffnungen, Durchgängen und Stützen struk-
turiert die großzügigen Säle und Korridore. „Van de
Velde hat sich mit diesem Entwurf vom Art Deco in

Art Deco or Modernism?
Through the architects’ sensitive
acts of renovation and restora-
tion, Van de Velde’s refined de-
sign details have once again be-
come visible. The geometric pat-
tern of the Belgian marble floors
is reflected on the ceilings. A
calm rhythm of window open-
ings, hallways, and supports
lends a sense of structure to the
spacious halls and corridors.
“Van de Velde shifted from Art
Deco to Modernism with this de-
sign...at least by Belgian stand-
ards,” says Robbrecht. He smiles
mischievously, knowing that
modernism in other regions of
Europe was less decorative and
more radically rationalist.
Double concrete shell
Since the library reopened,
its spacious, light-flooded
­reading room is often filled to
capacity. Books that were once
stored elsewhere have returned
to their place of origin in the
tower, shelved and stacked on
many of the 20 floors above
ground. Behind the exterior
wall, the architects added a
­second concrete shell on all
floors; this allowed them to
­p rovide climate control for the
valuable book collections with-
out altering the landmark’s
­distinctive appearance. High
up in the airy belvedere, a
wood-panelled lecture room
opens in all four directions.
The sweeping view it offers over
the city’s rooftops was part of
Van de Velde’s original design,
notes Robbrecht. To this day,
the Book Tower remains a bea-
con of knowledge, standing
proud over the city.

die Moderne bewegt“, meint Paul Robbrecht und

ergänzt „zumindest mit Blick auf belgische Verhält-
nisse“. Er lächelt verschmitzt, weil er weiß, dass die
Moderne in anderen Regionen Europas weniger
dekorativ und deutlich rationalistischer war.

Doppelte Betonhülle
Der große lichtdurchflutete Lesesaal ist nach seiner
Wiedereröffnung sehr oft bis auf den letzten Platz
belegt. Die ausgelagerten Bücher sind wieder an
ihrem Ursprungsort im Turm in die Regale gestellt
und auf einem Großteil der 20 oberirdischen
Geschosse gestapelt. Hinter die Außenwand haben
die Architekten auf allen Stockwerken eine zweite
Betonhülle eingezogen. So konnten sie die Klimati-
sierung der Büchersammlungen sicherstellen, ohne
das markante Erscheinungsbild des Turms zu verän-
dern. Hoch oben im luftigen Belvedere öffnet sich
der holzverkleidete Vortragsraum in alle vier Him-
melsrichtungen. Der Weitblick über die Dächer der
Stadt sei Van de Veldes Plan gewesen, sagt Paul

Robbrecht. Das konzentrierte Wissen residiert bis

heute dort oben im Bücherturm und triumphiert über
die Stadt.
