Wie Betonwürfel, die bis kurz vor dem Umfallen aufeinander
gestapelt wurden, wirken die insgesamt 182 Apartments
­des Wohnhochhauses „Innovationen“. Es ist die spröde, aber
un­verwechselbare und weithin sichtbare neue Landmarke im
Nordwesten von Stockholm. Ab Frühjahr 2021, wenn der fast
­identische Nachbarturm „Helix“ mit weiteren 138 Wohnungen
fertiggestellt sein wird, bilden die Zwillingstürme ein überdi-
mensionales Stadttor in der Skyline. Als Hommage an einen
skulpturalen Brutal­ismus, aber auch als Referenz zu den
­traditionellen gelblichen ­Ziegelfassaden Stockholms sind die
Fassaden aus gebürsteten vertikal gerippten Beton-Sand-­
wich­elementen hergestellt.
4,12 × 2,17 m große Festverglasungen machen es von
Weitem schwer, den Maßstab dieser Kuben abzuschätzen. Von
innen gesehen nehmen diese überdimensionalen rahmenlosen
Scheiben fast die ganze Außenwand einzelner Zimmer ein.
So entstehen in der edlen Betonkruste helle Wohnungen, bei
denen der Blick in die Stadt bis hinunter zum Hafen zur realen
Fototapete wird. Dunkle Flure sucht man in den überwiegend
aus drei bis vier Zimmern bestehenden Wohnungen vergebens.

With its 182 apartments, the residential highrise building
“Innovationen” is reminiscent of concrete cubes that were
­playfully stacked on top of each other. The tower has become
the charmingly rough and unmistakeable landmark of
Stockholm’s northwest, visible from afar. The almost identical
neighbouring tower “Helix” with its 138 apartments is sched-
uled for completion in the spring of 2021. The twin buildings
will then form a super-sized city gate within the skyline. As a
homage to Brutalism’s sculptural tendencies as well as a
­reference to Stockholm’s traditional yellow brick facades, the
exteriors are comprised of brushed and vertically ribbed ­concrete
sandwich elements.
Viewed from afar, the large, fixed glazing elements
­measuring 4,12 × 2,17 metres make it difficult to estimate the
scale of the cubes. These super-sized frameless glass panes
span almost the entire exterior wall of a single room. As a
result, the precious concrete crust reveals brightly lit apartments.
Here, the view towards the city, and beyond it towards the
­harbour, turns into real-life photo wallpaper. Dark corridors
are nowhere to be found in the apartments, most of which

Die Panoramafenster, die visuellen Kontakt zur Stadt herstellen,
sitzen in den vorstehenden Erkern. Der starke Verkehrslärm der
nahen mehrspurigen Stadtautobahn wird dagegen so weit wie
möglich ausgeblendet: Die Loggien sind tief nach innen gezogen,
in die Rippenstruktur ihrer Deckenuntersichten sind schallab-
sorbierende Streifen eingelegt. Jede Wohnung wird natürlich
belüftet, über Öffnungen, die zu diesen ruhigen Loggien hin
­orientiert sind: eine opake Lüftungsklappe im Schlafzimmer mit
Festverglasung sowie große Glasschiebetüren im Wohnzimmer.
Die Konstruktion aus Beton-Fertigteilen ermöglichte im Gegen-
satz zu Ortbeton die Baustelle auch bei Temperaturen unter 5 °
Celsius weiterlaufen zu lassen. Trotz des hohen Wand­anteils
hielten sich so die Kosten in Grenzen, sodass große Glasflächen
finanziell möglich wurden, was in Regionen, in denen es das
halbe Jahr nur wenig Tageslicht gibt, besonders wichtig ist.
Mit einer Gebäudehöhe von 125 m und 36 Geschossen
beziehungsweise 110 m und 32 Geschossen werden „Innovatio-
nen“ und „Helix“ die höchsten Wohngebäude der schwedischen
Hauptstadt sein. Als anonyme voll verglaste Bürotürme sollten
sie ursprünglich im neuen Stadtteil Hagastaden ein monumenta-

­ onsist of three to four rooms. The panorama windows establish

a visual connection to the city and are situated in projecting
bays. The noise caused by the multi-lane urban highway is
­suppressed as far as possible: loggias are recessed deeply
within the building volume, and their ceilings feature sound
proofing strips. Each apartment can be naturally ventilated by
openings facing these quiet loggias: in the bedrooms with
their fixed glazing, an opaque ventilation flap and in the living
rooms, large-format sliding glass doors. The construction
­consists of prefabricated concrete elements. Different than
­concrete cast in-situ, it allows construction to continue even
at temperatures below 5 degrees Centigrade. This enabled
cost reduction despite a high wall surface ratio. In return,
large glass surfaces became economically feasible – particu-
larly important in regions where sunlight is limited during half
of the year.
With a building height of 125 metres and featuring 36 floors,
or 110 metres and 32 floors, “Innovationen” and “Helix” will be
the tallest residential buildings of the Swedish city. They were
originally intended as anonymous, glazed office towers. Before

nahm die Konturen des bestehenden Entwurfs, um zeitrau-
bende neue Genehmigungsverfahren zu vermeiden. Die Anfor-
derung nach großzügigen Freibereichen für jede Wohnung und
der geringe Abstand zu den Nachbargebäuden in den unteren
Geschossen führte zu einer gänzlich neuen Gebäudehülle,
die trotz hoher Dichte eine überraschend hohe Wohnqualität
ermöglicht und die Zwillings­türme durch Maßstäblichkeit, Mate-
rialität und Farbigkeit in den historischen Kontext einbindet.  FK
construction began, the investor had changed, as had the
­architect and the building’s use. OMA adopted the contours
of the existing design in order to avoid a new, time-consuming
permit process. Requirements called for generous open
spaces for each apartment and minimal distances to neighbour-
ing buildings on the lower floors, which resulted in a new building
envelope. Despite its high density, the design offers a high
standard of residential quality and integrates the twin towers
within the site’s historical context in terms of scale, material
