Jahrzehntelang waren die vier Gebäuderiegel der Sozialwoh-
nungssiedlung Park Hill dem Verfall preisgegeben. Ihre Außen-
haut verwitterte unter einer dicken Rußschicht. Die ursprünglich
cremefarbenen Sichtziegel waren kaum vom grauen Betonske-
lett zu unterscheiden. Jack Lynn und Ivor Smith hatten den
Gebäudekomplex zwischen 1957 und 1961 auf einer Anhöhe
oberhalb des Bahnhofs von Sheffield errichtet. Ihr Entwurf ori-
entierte sich an der Unité d’Habitation und den Konzepten von
Alison und Peter Smithson. Nach einer ersten Sanierung des
nördlichen Riegels 2010–2011 haben Whittam Cox nun den
südwestlichen Block behutsam restauriert und in ein Wohnheim
für Studierende umgestaltet. Dabei war es dem Planungsteam

wichtig, wo immer es möglich war, die originalen Betonele-
mente, Ziegel und Mörtelfugen zu erhalten. Ihre Texturen und
Farben waren bewusst aufeinander abgestimmt und wesentli-

The four blocks that make up Park Hill social housing estate
were left to decay for decades. The external envelope was
slowly disintegrating under a thick layer of soot. It was barely
possible to tell the originally cream-coloured brickwork apart
from the grey concrete frame. Jack Lynn and Ivor Smith
designed the complex that was built between 1957 and 1961 on
an elevated site above Sheffield train station. Their design was
oriented on the Unité d’Habitation and the concepts of Alison
and Peter Smithson. Following work between 2010 and 2011 on
the northern block, which was the first to be renovated, now
Whittam Cox have carefully restored the south-western block
and converted it into a student residence. The design team
regarded it as important to retain the original concrete elements,
the brickwork, and the mortar joints, wherever possible. The
­textures and colours of these elements had been carefully

selected to harmonise with each other and they formed an

die Oberflächen gründlich gereinigt und ausgebessert. Fenster-
elemente mit schwarzem Aluminiumrahmen und scharlachroten
sowie weißen Paneelen ersetzen die weißen Sprossenfenster. In
den Balkonlaibungen sind die Ziegel sonnengelb und himmel-
blau geschlämmt. Mosaikplatten, die im Rahmen der Sanierung
an der Fassade im Erdgeschoss entdeckt wurden und früher
das Markenzeichen des Pubs im Park Hill Estate waren, dienten
im Außenbereich als Farbinspiration der Sanierung. Sie wurden
überholt und an ihrem angestammten Ort belassen. Das Béton
House, wie der Block nach seiner Instandsetzung genannt wird,
hat eine dreiachsige Grundstruktur. Zentrales Element sind die
drei Meter breiten Laubengänge, auf denen früher die Milchwä-
gen entlangfuhren. Sie erschließen jeweils das darüber und dar-
unter liegende Geschoss. Für die Gliederung des Wohnheims
in Townhouses war diese Struktur wie geschaffen: In Einheiten
von jeweils drei Ebenen befinden sich insgesamt acht Schlaf-
zimmer. Sie werden über eine zentrale mittlere Ebene erschlos-
sen, auf der sich auch die große Gemeinschaftsküche befindet.
Für alle Townhouse-Einheiten zusammen ist im Erdgeschoss
ein großzügiger, halböffentlicher Gemeinschaftsbereich entstan-
den. Die sichtbaren Betonflächen im Inneren wurden nass
geschliffen und klar versiegelt. Durch dieses Verfahren, das
wesentlich schonender als Kugelstrahlen ist, konnte die von der
Schalung geprägte Betonstruktur erhalten werden. Der leicht
rosafarbene Grundton, der durch diese Anwendung auf der
Betonoberfläche zurückblieb, harmoniert gut mit den Natur­
tönen aus Le Corbusiers Polychromie Architecturale. Sie war
tonangebend für die Wandfarbgebung: himmelblau, hellrosa
und englischgrün. BZ

important part of the original design. Externally, the surfaces
were thoroughly cleaned and repaired. Window elements with
black aluminium frames and panels in scarlet and white replace
the white mullioned windows. The brickwork of the balcony was
given a wash of sunny yellow or sky-blue paint. Mosaic panels
discovered during the renovation of the ground floor facade,
which had once formed the sign for the pub on the Park Hill
Estate, provided the inspiration for the colours used in the
­restoration work of the outdoor areas. Béton House, as the
block has now been dubbed following its renovation, has a
three-bay basic structure. The three-metre-wide access decks,
along which milk delivery floats used to drive in earlier days,
are a central element of the design. They serve the floors imme-
diately above and below. This structure seemed almost predes-
tined for breaking up the student residence into townhouse
units, each of which consists of three storeys and has a total
of eight bedrooms. These units are entered from the central
middle level, where the large communal kitchen is also located.
On the ground floor a generously sized, semi-public communal
area for all the townhouse units was made. The exposed con-
crete surfaces in the interior were wet sanded and then coated
with a clear varnish. Thanks to this process, which is considera-
bly ­gentler than shot blasting, it proved possible to retain the
board marks left on the concrete structure by the shuttering.
The slightly pink basic shade created by this treatment of the
concrete surface goes well with the natural shades take from Le
Corbusier’s Polychromie Architecturale, which provided the
source for the colours of the walls: sky-blue, light pink, and an
English green. BZ
