Eine Farbberaterin und ihr Ehemann bewohnen das viktoriani­
sche Reihenhaus im Norden von London. Weil die Bauherrin
von zu Hause aus arbeitet, wünschte sie sich einen ausreichend
großen Raum mit gleichmäßigem Tageslicht. Ihr bisheriges
­Atelier war nach Süden zur Straße hin orientiert und hatte den
Nachteil, dass direktes Sonnenlicht und die damit einhergehen­
den Schlagschatten die Farben stark verfälschten. Der neue
Arbeitsraum sollte daher nach Norden ausgerichtet sein und
dennoch viel Licht bieten. Auf dieser Seite war bislang die
Küche in einem eingeschossigen, schmalen Anbau unterge­
bracht, wie es für britische Wohnhäuser aus der zweiten Hälfte
des 19. Jahrhunderts typisch ist. Sie sollte dort auch bleiben.
Deshalb vergrößerten die Architekten den Anbau, sodass er
This Victorian terraced house in north London is home to a
­colour consultant and her husband. As the client works
from home, she wanted to have a north-lit space that was
­sufficiently large. Her old studio faced south, to the street,
which was not suitable because the direct sunlight and the
shadows it cast changed colours considerably. Her new
­workspace was therefore to face north, but also needed to
have plenty of light. The kitchen was originally located to
the rear of the house in a narrow single-storey back extension,
typical of British terraced houses from the second half of
the 19th century. The architects increased the size of this
­extension so that it now occupies the entire width of the site.
Its facade reflects the residents’ delight in colour and is

nun die gesamte Grundstücksbreite einnimmt. Seine Fassade
besteht aus rosa gefärbten Betonschalen, die grünen Fenster­
profile und das ebenso grüne, auffällige Regenfallrohr spiegeln
die Farbenfreude seiner Bewohner wider.
Die konkaven Betonschalen haben die Architekten eigens
für das Projekt entwickelt – zusammen mit einer Firma, die auf
Fliesen, Wandbeläge und Arbeitsplatten aus Beton spezialisiert
ist. Wegen ihrer Krümmung, in der sich der Schatten fängt,
­werden die Elemente Shadow Catcher genannt. Sie sind selbst­
tragend und nur über schlanke Edelstahlanker in den Mörtel­
fugen mit der dahinter liegenden Porenbetonwand verbunden,
damit sie nicht kippen. Die Fassaden zu den Nachbarn sind
dagegen mit roten Ziegelverblendern verkleidet. Der hohe
Dämmwert der Steine und 10 cm Steinwolldämmung reichen
aus, um bei einer Wandstärke von 32 cm einen U-Wert von
0,27 W/m2K zu erzielen.
Im Inneren tragen Stahlstützen und -träger das Dach des
Anbaus mit seinen nach Norden ausgerichteten Sheds sowie

The architects developed the scalloped concrete shells
especially for the project – working in collaboration with a
firm that specialises in concrete tiles, wall claddings and
work surfaces. The concave hollow of these elements is
always in shadow, which lends them their name “Shadow
Catchers”. They are self-supporting and tied back to the
­aerated concrete wall behind by wall ties. In contrast, the
side walls facing the neighbours are clad with pink-coloured
brick slips. As the concrete elements have good insulating
properties, together with 10 cm of mineral wool insulation,
they achieve a U-value of 0.27 W/m2K, with a wall thickness
of just 32 cm.
Internally, steel columns and beams carry the “sawtooth”
roof to the extension, which also has a horizontal rooflight.

zur Altbauwand stets verschattet. Alle Stahlverbindungen wur­
den vor Ort geschweißt und so glatt verschliffen, dass die Nähte
unsichtbar sind. Am auffälligsten aber ist das sanfte Neo-Mint,
Pantone Farbe des Jahres 2020, das den industriellen Charak­
ter des Stahltragwerks abmildern soll. Millennial Pink, Pantone-
Farbe des Jahres 2018, wurde für die Lampen und die Fliesen
im Gäste-WC gewählt, und Blattgold ziert die Wände unter
den Oberlichtern. Es verleiht dem kalten Nordlicht Wärme. Das
WC ist auch mit einer Dusche ausgestattet, um für zukünftige
Umnutzungen gerüstet zu sein. Aus Platzgründen ist seine
Trennwand im Grundriss schräg angeordnet, ebenso die Dielen
des Fußbodens, die den Kunden den richtigen Weg weisen –
vorbei am Küchenblock und hinein ins Atelier. Hier führt die
Farbberaterin ihre Besprechungen an einem großen Tisch für
bis zu zehn Personen durch. Abends, nach getaner Arbeit, sit­
zen die Hausherren am selben Tisch zusammen oder nutzen
den Raum für eine Stunde Yoga. HW

and is consequently always in shade. All the steel connections
were welded on site and then sanded down so that the joints
are invisible. The most striking aspect is perhaps the use of
a gentle Neo-Mint, Pantone colour of the year 2020, which
­softens the industrial character of the steel structure. Millennial
Pink, Pantone colour of 2018, was chosen for the pendant
light fittings and for the tiles in the guest WC, while gold leaf
is used for the finish to the walls beneath the rooflights. This
gives the cold north light a warmer quality. A shower was
­fitted in the WC to futureproof the space. To make the most
of space, the partition wall to the WC is angled in plan and
the floorboards are laid at the same angle to accentuate this
openness. This indicates to visiting clients the route they
should take – past the kitchen island and into the studio.
The client holds her meetings here at a large table where
up to ten people can sit. In the evening, when work is over,
the couple sits down together at this table or uses the space
for an hour of yoga. HW
