Stahlgeflecht und der warme Naturbaustoff Kiefer bestimmen
die Fassade des Wohnblocks in Cornellà, einem Vorort im Süd-
westen von Barcelona. Die beiden Materialien sind so raffiniert
eingesetzt, dass der kostengünstige soziale Wohnungsbau edel
und hochwertig wirkt und sich stark von seinem Umfeld aus
mehr oder weniger heruntergekommenen Häuserblocks
abhebt. Peris + Toral haben Erfahrung mit sozialen Wohnbau-
projekten und beweisen, dass auch diese nachhaltig, von hoher
Qualität und innovativ sein können. Das macht ein Blick auf die
Grundrisse deutlich, die in gleich große Quadrate mit 3,60 m
Kantenlänge aufgeteilt sind. Doch was auf dem Plan streng aus-
sieht, wirkt als dreidimensionaler Raum äußerst differenziert.

Steel mesh and the warm natural construction material pine define
the facades of the housing block in Cornellà, a southwestern sub-
urb of Barcelona. The two materials were used in a sophisticated
manner that provides the cost ­efficient social housing project with
a high quality appearance. This also allows it to strongly distin-
guish itself from its surroundings, more or less consisting of run-
down housing blocks. Peris + Toral possess experience in social
housing development and demonstrate that it can be sustainable,
of high quality and innovative. A view of the floor plans, divided
into 3.60 by 3.60 m squares, emphasises this fact. They look strict
in plan, but as three dimensional spaces, they allow a high degree

Um die zentrale Küche gruppieren sich die anderen Zimmer.
Ihnen ist keine Nutzung zugewiesen, und so können die Mieter
selbst festlegen, wo sie wohnen, arbeiten und schlafen wollen.
Alle Räume lassen sich flexibel zusammenschalten. Sie sind mit
großen Öffnungen verbunden, die bei Bedarf mit Schiebetüren
geschlossen werden können.
Die meisten Wohnungen bestehen aus sechs Quadraten,
nur die Einheiten in den Ecken sind 4,5 beziehungsweise 6,5
Raummodule groß. Zugänglich sind diese Eckwohnungen über
ein Verteilerquadrat, das direkt an die Treppenhauskerne ange-
gliedert ist. Die Eingänge zu den anderen Wohnungen führen
vom Laubengang über eine abschließbare Tür zunächst auf den
Balkon. Er ist Eingangsbereich und Pufferzone zugleich. Mit
dem Konzept, möglichst viele Flächen mit möglichst vielen Nut-
zungen zu füllen und Flure gänzlich zu eliminieren, schaffen die
Architekten eine Großzügigkeit, die im spanischen sozialen
Wohnungsbau ihresgleichen sucht. Nach dessen Vorgaben
sind für ein Schlafzimmer Flächen von nur 6 m2 zugelassen.
Bei Peris + Toral bekommen alle Wohnungen Licht und
Luft von zwei Seiten, was eine ausreichende Querlüftung
ermöglicht und eine Klimaanlage unnötig macht. Sonnen-
schutzrollos und ein Gittergewebe sind an der Außenseite der
kitchen. Their functions were not ­specifically programmed and, as
a result, renters can determine themselves where living, working
and sleeping take place. All spaces support flexible linkages
between them. They are connected by large openings that can be
closed by use of sliding doors, as required.
Most apartments consist of six squares. Only the units in
the corners of the building feature 4.5 or 6.5 room modules.
These corner apartments can be accessed through a circulation
square that is directly connected to the stairwell cores. An
access balcony leads residents to a lockable gate and a private
balcony in front of the entrances to the other apartments. The
private balconies serve both as entrance area and buffer zone.
The building concept aims at allocating as many functions as
possible to as many areas as possible, while eliminating corri-
dors completely. The architects achieve a degree of spatial lar-
gesse that is exceptional in Spanish social housing. Its specifica-
tions also permit bedrooms with an area of only 6 m2.
Peris + Toral provide all apartments with light and air from
opposite building sides. This facilitates sufficient cross ventila-
tion, air conditioners are not required. Sun protection blinds and
grid mesh lattices are mounted to the exterior of the balconies
and allow cooling wind to stream along the facades. The mesh

Balkone montiert und lassen den Wind an der Fassade entlang-
streichen, der das Gebäude kühlt. Das Gewebe ist außen sil-
bern beschichtet, damit es reflektiert und innen anthrazit – das
sorgt für eine bessere Durchsichtigkeit.
Neben dem Klimakonzept haben die Architekten auch bei
der Konstruktion aus Holz, das aus dem Baskenland stammt,
auf Nachhaltigkeit geachtet. Das Tragwerk aus auskragenden
Mehrfeldträgern wurde so konzeptioniert, dass die Querschnitte
so gering wie möglich ausfallen konnten. Gespart wurde auch
bei den Geländern aus Stahlgeflecht. Um die nötige Steifigkeit
zu erreichen, wurden sie mehrfach gekantet. Teure Schweißar-
beiten entfielen.
Im gesamten Gebäude ist die Schichtung von Räumen ein
zentraler Aspekt. Sie ist auch von außen wahrnehmbar, wo Stra-
ßenraum, überdachter Patio und Innenhof einen fließenden
Übergang von öffentlichem zu privatem Bereich bilden. In
Zukunft soll auch die Nachbarschaft von dem Neubau profitie-
ren. Neben Läden im Sockelgeschoss ist im Untergeschoss ein
Kino vorgesehen. Ein solches war zuvor auf dem Grundstück
angesiedelt und die Anwohner forderten bei der Gemeinde wie-
der eines ein. Wann sie als Betreiber das Geld dafür zur Verfü-
gung haben wird, ist allerdings noch unklar. HW

features a silvery coating on the outside, where it has a reflective
purpose. On the inside, its colour is anthracite, allowing a high
degree of transparency.
Aside from the climate concept, the architects also paid
attention to sustainability in terms of the structure. It consists of
timber sourced from the Basque country. The load bearing
­structure features cantilevering multi span beams and was
designed in order to keep cross sections as minimal as possible.
The railings consisting of steel mesh also allowed saving costs.
In order to achieve necessary degrees of stiffness, they were
canted repeatedly. Expensive welding work was not required.
The layering of spaces is a core aspect of the entire build-
ing interior. This can also be experienced from the exterior, where
the street space, the covered patio and the interior courtyard
establish flowing transitions between public and private spaces.
In the coming years, the neighbourhood is also supposed to
benefit from the new building. Stores are scheduled to open on
the ground floor, a cinema is planned for the basement spaces.
A cinema had actually been located on the site before, and the
residents demanded a new one from the municipality. It is not
quite clear yet when the municipality as operator will have
access to funding. HW
