Selbstbewusst präsentiert sich das neue
Schwimmbad der spanischen Kleinstadt
­Toro nordwestlich von Madrid. Das strenge
Gebäude mit seiner modernen Formenspra-
che steht zugleich für die expressive Konti-
nuität von Toros historischem Vermächtnis:
Maßstab, Textur und Farbigkeit nehmen Be-
zug auf die monumentale Architektur der
Stadt. Wände aus Stampflehm verleihen
dem Bad seinen archaischen Charakter.
Dem Entwurf, hervorgegangen aus einem
Wettbewerb, folgte eine intensive Auseinan-
dersetzung mit dem Material. Um die erfor-
derliche Festigkeit zu erreichen, wurde sei-
ne Zusammensetzung durch zahlreiche Ver-
suche ermittelt; wasserabweisende Zuschlä-

ge verhindern das Eindringen von Feuchtig-
keit. Nach außen wirkt der kubische Bau ge-
schlossen. Wie ein Schutzwall schiebt sich
eine lange Wand vor das Bad. Dahinter er-
heben sich die Dächer von Cafeteria und
Umkleiden, deren Innenräume durch die na-
türliche Belichtung über verglaste Höfe hell
und transparent erscheinen. Die Schwimm-
halle ist als autonomes Volumen geschützt
vor Einblicken und klimatischen Schwankun-
gen. Ihre 60 cm starken Längswände wer-
den durch integrierte Stahlstützen verstärkt,
auf denen die Holzdeckenbalken aufliegen.
Von oben einfallendes Licht prägt mit sei-
nem Schattenspiel den Innenraum und ver-
leiht ihm eine meditative Atmosphäre.

This new pool makes a strong appearance in
the small Spanish city of Toro north of Madrid.
The building’s strict design gesture and its
modern language of forms also recall the ex-
pressive continuity of Toro’s historic legacy.
Scale, texture, and colour refer to the city’s
monumental architecture. Walls made of
rammed earth provide the pool with its archa-
ic character.
The design is the result of a competition and a
following intensive deliberation on this particu-
lar material. In order to reach the required
­degree of stability, the wall material’s compo-
sition was established within numerous ex-
periments. Hydrophobic aggregates reduce
moisture intrusion. On the exterior, the cube-

shaped building appears hermetic. A long

wall, reminiscent of historic fortifications or
ramparts, is placed in front of the pool. Be-
hind it, roof structures of the cafeteria and the
locker rooms emerge. Their interiors have a
light and transparent character, due to natural
lighting via glazed courtyards.

The pool resembles an autonomous volume,
and as such is protected from the views of
passers-by as well as climatic variations. The
60 cm strong longitudinal walls are reinforced
by integrated steel columns that support a
wood joist roof construction. Light that enters
from above defines the interior through its

shadow play and provides the space with a
meditative atmosphere.
