Zahlreiche Wasseradern durchziehen das flache Westmünster-
land nahe der niederländischen Grenze. Dazu zählt auch der
Fluss Berkel, an dessen Flussauen im mittelalterlichen Stadtkern
von Vreden das neue kulturhistorische Zentrum entstand. Der
langgestreckte Baukörper setzt die kleinteilige, geschlossene
Bebauung entlang der ehemaligen Stadtmauer fort. Die Südseite
orientiert sich zu den Auen und steht teilweise auf Bohrpfählen im
parallel zum Fluss verlaufenden wasserführenden Stadtgraben.
Die andere Seite öffnet sich mit einem markanten Kopfbau zu
einem Platz und zur schräg gegenüberliegenden Stadtbibliothek.

Netherlands, the flat Westmünsterland region is veined with
numerous streams and rivers. One of them is the River Berkel;
alongside the river’s floodplain, a new cultural history centre
has recently been built in the medieval core of the little town
of Vreden. This elongated building continues the small-scale of
the existing development along the old town walls. The south
front faces towards the water meadow, parts of it stand on
piles in the water of the city moat, which runs parallel to the
river. On the opposite side a striking end building addresses
a public square and the municipal public library that stands

gabe, unter einem Dach Bestandsbauten unterschiedlicher Epo-
chen zu vereinen. Neben den beiden Gebäuden des Museums
für Regionalgeschichte aus den 1970er- und 80er-Jahren, die
jetzt als Museumsverwaltung sowie Stadt- und Kreisarchiv die-
nen, standen auf dem Grundstück ein Armenhaus aus dem 16.
Jahrhundert und der aus dem 14. Jahrhundert stammende Pul-
verturm als ältester Profanbau in der Stadt.
Die Architekten verbanden die Bestandsbauten, fügten einen
Neubau für das Museum hinzu und sanierten die mittelalterli-
chen, denkmalgeschützten Gebäude als Exponate der kultur­
historischen Ausstellung. Eine einheitliche Verkleidung aus
­kohlegebranntem Klinker fasst den alten und den neuen Muse-
umsbau zu einer Einheit zusammen. Versatzstücke aus dem
Bestand wie Gesimse oder Pilaster tauchen darin in neuer
­Interpretation wieder auf. Variierende Dachformen und Ver-
sprünge, aber auch die abgestuften Farbtöne der Ziegel, die
diagonally opposite. In their design Pool Leber Architekten
were confronted with the task of unifying existing buildings
from different eras under a single roof. On the site, as well as
the two buildings of the Regional History Museum, which date
from the 1970s and 1980s and today house the museum
offices and the city and regional archive, there was also a poor-
house dating from the 16th century and a gunpowder tower
erected in the 14th century, the town’s oldest profane building.
The architects connected these existing buildings, added a
new museum, and restored the listed medieval buildings,
­making them into a part of the exhibition on cultural history.
The uniform cladding of coal-fired brickwork makes a single
entity of the old and the new museum. Elements of the exist-
ing ­fabric such as cornices or pilasters, interpreted in a new
way, surface at various places. The functions are subtly
­distinguished from each other by the use of different roof

durch unterschiedliche Brenntemperaturen entstehen, heben
die Nutzungen subtil voneinander ab.
In jedem Altbau steckt eine andere, für die jeweilige Bau-
zeit typische Tragkonstruktion. Die mittelalterlichen Mauerwerks-
bauten mit ihren Holzsparrendächern wurden saniert und mit
einer Innendämmung aus Lehmbausteinen versehen. Bei den
mit Mauerwerk ausgefachten Konstruktionen – dem Stahlskelett
aus den 1970er-Jahren und dem Stahlbetonskelett aus den
1980er-Jahren – ist der Klinker an die Stelle der alten Fassaden-
verkleidung getreten. Auch der Neubau zeigt sich als Kind sei-
ner Zeit. Im großen Atrium, das neben einem Innenhof Licht in
die großen Innenräume bringt, dominieren Sichtbetonflächen.
Die Klinkerfassaden reichen an vielen Stellen ins Wasser hinein,
bis zum Boden des Stadtgrabens. Anderorts bilden sich Terras-
sen und kleine Treppenanlagen zum Stadtgraben hin aus. Am
Eingang führt eine neue Brücke auf die andere Seite des Gra-
bens und verbindet das Grün der Au mit der Altstadt. SD

Each of the existing buildings has a different loadbearing
structure, typical of the era in which it was built. The medieval
masonry buildings with their timber rafter roofs were renovated
and were insulated internally with a layer of air-dried mudbricks.
Where infill masonry is used – in the steel frame dating from
the 1970s and in the 1980s reinforced concrete frame – clinker
brickwork replaced the old facade cladding. The new building,
too, is a child of its time. In the large atrium, which, together
with an internal courtyard, introduces plenty of light into the
­sizable spaces of the interior, areas of exposed reinforced
­concrete are dominant. At many places the clinker facades
extend into the water, down to the bed of the city moat. A new
bridge beside the entrance leads to the far side of the moat,
connecting the green environment of the river’s floodplain with
