Als die Architekten den Auftrag für das neue
Besucherzentrum des Castelo de Pombal,
einer mittelalterlichen Burg in der portugiesi­
schen Kleinstadt, erhielten, waren sie mit
dem Bauplatz bestens vertraut: Sie sind
­bereits seit 2010 mit der Neuorganisation
des gesamten Hügels beschäftigt. Um die
Touristenattraktion wieder zu beleben und
auch bei den Einheimischen das Kulturerbe
stärker in den Fokus zu rücken, entstanden
neue Verbindungen zwischen dem Ort am
Fuß des Hügels, der Burgruine, die weithin
sichtbar über der Stadt thront, sowie den
umliegenden Grünflächen.
Neu angelegte Wege, Rampen und Treppen
führen die Besucher vorbei an einer neu er­
richteten Cafetéria zum restaurierten Ein­
gang der Ruine. Die weitaus größte Heraus­
forderung stellte jedoch die Integration des
Besucherzentrums innerhalb des Burghofs
dar. Den kompakten und vollständig mit
Kalksandsteinplatten verkleideten Stahlbau
platzierten die Architekten mit Fingerspitzen­
gefühl direkt an der historischen Außen­
mauer. Das Raumprogramm ist auf ein Mini­
mum reduziert und beinhaltet lediglich einen
Empfangsbereich, einen Ausstellungsraum
und ein Lager. Die Höhe der Aussichts­
plattform, die die gesamte Dachfläche ein­
nimmt, ist so gewählt, dass sie den Besu­
chern durch ein spätgotisches Fenster einen
Ausblick auf das Tal und den Fluss Arunca

ermöglicht. Die Stufen auf die Dachplattform
sind in den Baukörper eingeschnitten, eben­
so der Eingang, den eine dezente Ausspa­
rung in der Fassade ausformt.
Das architektonische Konzept ergänzen Ein­
bauten aus Cortenstahl auf dem gegenüber­
liegenden Hauptturm: Ein Ausstellungsraum
sowie eine Art Schaufenster sind über eine
neue Stahltreppe erreichbar.
Ein »Teppich« aus hellen Kieselsteinen
und einzeln platzierte Stufen aus Kalksand­
stein korrespondieren mit den hellen Ober­
flächen des Neubaus, der wie ein glanz­
volles Möbelstück inmitten der mächtigen
Burgmauern Neu und Alt harmonisch in
­Einklang bringt. EM

When the architects were commissioned to
design the new visitor centre for Pombal Cas-
tle, a medieval fortification in this small Portu-
guese town, they were already intimately ac-
quainted with the site. From 2010 onwards,
namely, they had been involved in the reor-
ganisation of the entire hill on which the castle
ruins stand.
In order to regenerate this tourist attraction
and, at the same time, to focus the attention
of the local population on its cultural heritage,
a new link was created between the urban
­area at the foot of the hill and the ruins of the
fortification. The latter stand enthroned above
the town and the surrounding countryside,
visible for miles around.
Freshly created paths, ramps and staircases
lead visitors up the hillside past a newly
erected restaurant to the entrance to the ru-
ins, which has also been restored.
Integrating the visitor centre into the courtyard
of the castle, however, presented a far greater
challenge. With great finesse, the architects
have set this compact new steel structure –
completely clad in sandlime slabs – immedi-
ately next to the historical outer wall of the
castle. The spatial programme for the new
building was reduced to a minimum. It con-
sists simply of a reception area, an exhibition
space and a store.
The height of the observation deck, which oc-
cupies the entire area of the roof, was deter-
mined so as to afford visitors a view through a
late Gothic window opening to the valley and
the River Arunca below. The staircase leading
up to the roof was incised in the volume of the
building, as was the entrance, which forms an
unassuming opening in the facade.
The concept for the visitor centre is comple-
mented by elements in Corten steel added to
the main tower opposite. An exhibition space
and what looks like a showcase are accessi-
ble via a new steel staircase.
A “carpet” of pale gravel and individually laid
sandlime steps echo the light-coloured sur-
faces of the new structure, which stands like a
splendid accoutrement within the castle walls,
harmoniously uniting new and old.
