CAUTION
Handling of Electrostatic-sensitive Semiconductor Devices
Certain semiconductor devices used in the equipment are liable to damage due to static voltage. Observe
the following precautions when handling these devices in their unterminated state, or sub-units containing
these devices:
1) Persons removing sub-units from an equipment using these devices must be earthed by a
wrist strap connected to the earthing point ©) provided on the equipment.
2) Soldering irons used during the repair operations must be low voltage types with earthed tips
and isolated from the mains voltage by a double insulated transformer.
3) Outer clothing worn must be unable to generate static charges.
4) Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) fitted with these devices must be stored and transported in anti-
static bags.

344 Front Panel
An anti-reflective polyester plate covers the cards on the front panel of the repeater. The
lubber line is
jide the plate. Green LEDs illuminate the lubber line and the cards in an
area of + 55°. In the lower area of the front plate (refer to Fig. 3-1), there is an LED to the
left of the cards that lights with three colours. Under this there is a digital display for course
and alarms. To the right of the roses there are two multiple-function keys and above these
two luminous panels for the display of course correction and test status.

34.2 Gear Assembly with the Stepping Motor
(Refer to Fig. 3-2)
The 10° card is directly mounted onto the shaft of the stepping motor. The stepping motor
rotates the 360° card via a two-step toothed wheel gearing with a transmission ratio of
1:36. The 10° card is equipped with a graduation of 1/10° and the 360° card with a gradua-
tion of 5°. Both cards are translucent and are lit up around the lubber line by green LEDs.

34.3 Repeater PCB and Display PCBS
(Refer to Fig. 3-3 and Fig. 3~4)
The electronics required for converting the serial signal of the RS 422 interface is on the
repeater PCB. This PCB is fixed to the gear panel with spacer bolts. The stepping motor,
mounted together with the gear panel, is controlled via a cable connection. Two flat cables
are used to connect the repeater PCB to each of the display PCBs.
The display PCBs are also screwed securely on the gear panel by spacer bolts. The dis-
play PCB on the left contains the three-coloured LED and the digital display; the PCB on
the right contains both keys and both luminous panels for display of the operating mode.

Operating Principle
The repeater compass receives the course information from gyro compass or from the
magnetic compass by means of serial heading transmission with absolute and clear values;
serial transmission is via the RS 422 HEADING SERIAL") interface.
If itis intended to indicate data via an NMEA RS 422 interface (possible from Version E02),
the repeater compass recognizes this type of interface and changes automatically over to
gyro / magnetic compass operation. Selecting the telegram type via a configuration is not
necessary.
The serial course informati
stepping motor.
In addition to analog course display by the 360° and the 10° card, the steering repeater
compass is also equipped with a digital course display on the left display PCB. This course
display cannot be desynchronized (refer here to Fig. 3-1). The corresponding course sig-
nal processing is also carried out on the steering repeater PCB.
This digital display also reports any possible error or alarm by means of a preset display
code.
‘LED — also mounted on the left display PCB — signalizes the status of the repeater com-
pass and of the telegram:
= ted: Repeater compass is defective (alarm indication) or the telegram is not o. k.
= green: Repeater compass is available and telegram is 0. k.

Various functions can be selected via two keys on the right display PCB:
— 18'Function: DIM
This function is constantly on and is not displayed specially. With
the” © "key or the "st" key, the setting can be made darker or brighter.
— 2° Function: TEST
This function is activated by pressing the keys ” ” and” 25” simultan—
eously for 5 s and is displayed by the C= luminous panel. The test
then runs on its own.
The dimming of all displays and lightings as well as the completeness
of the digital display and the functionality of the analog displays is
tested. The test lasts approx. 3s.

: CORRECTION
Correction is invoked by pressing the keys” 0” and "3: ” simultan—
ously for approx. 10 s and is displayed by the ES) luminous panel.
With the” © " key or the "i" key, the display value of the cards is cor
rected in correspondence with the digital display. Approx. 10s after the
last card adjustment, the CORRECTION function is completed. The DIM
function is then once again available as primary function.
Desynchronization of the card display is only possible as the result of a stepping error from
the stepping motor. It is not possible as the result of an interruption in the course transmis-
sion or in the power supply.
Ifthe keys” @” and "+s" are pressed down for a pe-
riod longer than approx. 15s, the service mode will be
activated (LED flashing yellow). By pressing the RE-
SET key, this mode is left again.
