WHAT ARE REFLEXIVE VERBS?

In English verbs are reflexive when the direct objects of the sentence are the same with the
subject
1. Allow me to introduce myself
2. She is preparing herself
3. We fixed it ourselves
WHY LEARN GERMAN REFLEXIV VERBS?
  German verbs can take on a completely different meaning when you use them with
reflexive pronouns
Example: ich habe versprochen (I promised)
Ich habe mich versprochen (I misspoke)
 Many expressions in German require the use of reflexive pronouns, even if you wouldn’t
use them in English.
Example: ich verliebe mich (I am falling in love)

CASES IN REFLEXIVE VERBS

You will need to determine the case (accusative/dative) of your reflexive pronouns.
 DATIVE
1. If your reflexive German sentence has a direct object in addition to your pronouns, your
reflexive pronoun will be in the dative case. And the dative case goes in the definite
article
Example:
I. ich wasche mir die Hande (I am washing my hands)
Ich ziehe mir die Kleidung an (I am putting on my cloths)
Ich putze mir die Zahne
Ich wasche meine Tasche (I am washing my bag)

ACCUSATIVE
i. However, if the reflexive pronoun is the only object in your sentence. It will take the
accusative case

USAGE
Reflexive pronoun must be in alignment with the subject
 Ich interessiere mich fur die deutsche Sprache
 Wir konzentrieren uns auf die Arbeit
Main clause (independent clause)
In the main clause the reflextive pronoun always come directly after the conjugated verb
 Er kummert sich um seine Oma.
When the object of your verb is a pronoun
The object must come between the conjugated verb and the reflexive pronoun
 Ich rasiere mir das Gesicht…….ich rasiere es mir.
Subordinate clause (Dependent Clause)
  Ich freue mich auf den Urlaub, weil ich mich erholen kann (after the subject in the
dependent clause)
