CHAPTER 1

Problem and Its Setting

Introduction

The technology makes our life easy and it becomes a part of our lives everywhere,

anywhere. Before the growth of the technology being rampant, there is a first major source of

innovation in technology and that is Television. Technology makes our work easier and it also

entertain us. What the researcher talking about is Television it can entertain us, give us some

information, and it can expand our mind but those are the positive thing that television could

give us. If television has a good side it has a bad sides also like sex, crimes, violence, and the

worse is television addiction. As a researcher television really has a big impact. From her

experience of watching television there are some entertainment that are not suitable for her in

other words it is not good for her. The researcher started to watch television since it started to

study and one of her hobbies is watching television since she’s not allowed to go out. At the

same time the researcher learn some things by watching TV.

Television in short TV this is the invention in 20 th century in ancient Greek tele mean

‘TAR’ vision means sight. Television was invented in year 1926. It is a brainchild of John L.

Batef. Television is a system for transmitting visual images and sound that are reproduced on

screens, chiefly used to broadcast programs for entertainment, information, and education.

Television is also a device that receives television signals and reproduces them on screen. Due

to the growing industry of television, audiences have big impact in the television industry with-

out, no image on the screen. Television has a good and bad cause and effects. According to

Hollen & Slaby,(1979), children starts to spend television at the age of 6 months, as they grow

up, it increases number of hours they spend on television until it reaches by up to six and a half

hours every day. Because of this, we think that it leads to positive and negative effects of the
2

behavior of children as they grow up. Children in the 21 st century are now exposed in the

television screens and we cannot prevent. They are treated by the researchers and policy

makers as a “special audience” due they are in process to learn things from the screen (potter,

2008). Also, they are not yet mature to select a show appropriate to them. So, that as more and

more children tempt to watch, the more they see something wrong or something right depending

on the content of the program they watch. Watching television can include violence, behavior

and lead to emotional problems not also among children but also to the adult. Mostly the

children is the most affected because unlike adult children is still in the process of right and

wrong but adult they can actually identify either it is good or bad for them. Because of the

number of violent acts, a person may see, there is a result of the mental problem called Copycat

phenomenon. According to Sparks, (2013), Phenomenon defines as imitating pr copying the act

or behavior of a person from the particular show.

According to Gunter and MC Aleer, (1997), Television has a great benefit among people

as they get easily aware and connect society they faced. They also stated that television is not

‘one-eyed-monster’ who waits to spread evil over the young members of the household. This is

an implication that when a child watches a significant program that is educational, informative

and value-promoted shows will increase their intellectual growth. Watching television is being

described as their hobbies, a thing to relieve stress, or a way to access some information and

some people say that it is just a time wasting for them well it is quite true. Television has a great

benefit among children as they get easily aware and connect about the physical happenings in

their modern-faced society. Violence is one of the primarily negative effects of television among

children but there are some other disadvantages of watching television and it is Dangers to

health, a time wasting, and lastly Television addiction.

Hence, this study is perceived.

Review of Related Literature

Television is one of the biggest influences in the lives of most people. People spend

hours every day watching television programming, so of course this will affect their morality.

Television is like a window to the modern world. Many people vie programs that they aired on

television; they can gain a lot of information and knowledge. Most programming like the National

Geographic and Discovery Channels can be used as educational tools in schools and at home

to learn our children instead of reading books. Unfortunately, some programs that are aired may

be unsuitable for general viewing as they may contain too much violence and bloodshed.

Television viewing has its advantages and disadvantages. People have right to choose

what to watch and nobody is to blame if they pick the wrong program. Obviously, the effect of

too much violent television is usually negative for children, and some these perspectives will be

discussed in this paper. Many programs, shows and movies on television are violent. These

programs are not good for children to watch. The more kids see violence on television, the less

sensitive and they become to it. And mostly children think that television is good for them.

Today, it is not just teenagers and adults who get hooked on television, but also children.

Children all over the usual world watch television. There tend to be several articles and studies

done showing how television is bad for children. For instance, in an article by Vlad (2006), it

states that those children who spend more time watching television tend to spend less time

interacting with their families and also playing creatively. The more those children engaged to

television it might change their morality and they might be addicted to television.

Television has a great benefit among children as they get easily aware and connect

about the physical happenings in their modern-faced society (Gunter and McAleer, 1997: xii-

xiii). They also stated that television is not ‘one-eyed-monster’ who waits to spread evil over the

young members of the household. This is an implication that when a child watches a significant
4

program that is- educational, informative, and values- promoted shows will increase their

intellectual growth. Some shows let you travel vicariously and teach you about people, cultures,

ideas, and places you might never encounter in real life. Watching a variety of shows might give

us an understanding of the world we live in and expose us to thing we might otherwise come

across in our own lives. Studies show that if they watch educational programs, their tendency is

to learn basic shapes, numbers, letters, etc.

Violence is one of the primarily negative effects of television among children. Television

violence had been increasing for the past years. In the studies, it shows that an average of 32

acts per hour, a child may see on (Gerbner). Because of the number of violent acts a child may

see, there is a result of the mental problem called “copycat phenomenon”. Copycat

phenomenon defines as imitating or copying the act or behavior of a person from a particular

show (Sparks, 2013). An example of this is if a child sees on television, a person who acts to be

violent; there is a possibility to imitate its, action, further, once it continues to imitate until he/she

grows up, it results as to be his/her personality.

This chapter presents the methods used in the researcher. It is where the researcher

design, research local, the participating, term paper instruments, data gathering procedure, and

ethical consideration.

Term Paper Design

The current research used the face-to-face method research design. It is face-to-face

because the researcher’s target is to identify how watching television affects children and what

may be the positive and negative effects that we can get from watching television.

Research Locale

This study was conducted at Libertad National High School located in Libertad Butuan

City, Province of Agusan Del Norte, Region of CARAGA, Philippines. Libertad National High

School is one of the big schools of Butuan City.

Research Respondents/Sampling

Five (5) junior high students of Libertad National High School were selected in

conducting this study. The researcher interviewed the students individually and face-to-face to

know how watching television affects to the children and what it could lead too.

Research Instruments

To hasten the process of data gathering, the researcher used the following instruments:

 Mobile Phone
15

The researcher used a mobile phone to gather some photos which can be used

for documentation purposes.

respondents, the researcher used a voice recording machine and saved all the files for

data gathering purposes.

 Paper and Pen

After recording the responses of the respondents, the researcher

transcribed and translated what was said in the responses through writing it in the paper.

Data Gathering

The researcher sent a permission letter to the principal and the respondents to

conduct an interview for data gathering purposes. Afterwards, the researcher gathered the

responses from the respondents and recording them using a voice recording machine. After

transcribing, translating, and interpreting the responses of the respondents, the researcher

informed the respondents of the results of the study

Ethical Consideration

Ethical considerations were secured in conducting the study. Parent consents

were sent to the respondents before the interview process which are to be signed by the

guardian of the respondents. The respondents who have the consent of their parents will be

credited as part of the study. Otherwise, the respondent will not be considered as contributor in

the study.

Summary, Conclusion, and Recommendations

This chapter presents the review of the research, the findings, the results and the

recommendations.

Summary

The study has been made and aimed to identify how watching television affects

children and what may be the positive and negative effects that they can get from watching

television. There were five (5) junior high students of Libertad National High School in this study

which were selected using the face-to-face method. This research was conducted during the

School Year 2019-2020. The researcher engaged an in-depth interview using the guide

questions personally found by the researcher to gather relevant information. The study found

out that watching television can bring both negative and positive effects on students. However,

the students are not aware of what watching television can affect the students.

Findings

After interpreting the results of the study, the following findings were

manipulated:

1. The students are not aware of what television watching could lead to them.

2. Students are not productive in their school and instead, they are watching the television.

3. Watching television have high effect on students in terms of their emotions and behavior.

Conclusion

Television can have positive and negative effects on students. Setting restrictions
19

and time limits on what students can watch and how much they can watch it will reduce the

negative and positive effects from watching television.

Recommendations

In view of the results and conclusions shown in this study, the following respondents are

presented

 Students: It is strongly recommended for students to have awareness on the effects of

television watching to them.

 Future Researchers: For better and more accurate results, the researcher would like to

recommend that the number of respondents should be increased as well the number of

questions. Also, additional sub-questions should be added for more concrete results.
