Myrthen, Op. 25
[1] Widmung
Friedrich Rückert (1788-1866)
Du meine Seele, du mein Herz, You are my soul, you are my heart,
Du meine Wonn’, o du mein Schmerz, you are my joy and my pain,
Du meine Welt, in der ich lebe, you are the world I live in,
Mein Himmel du, darein ich schwebe, the heaven in which I float,
O du mein Grab, in das hinab you are my grave,
Ich ewig meinen Kummer gab. where I have laid to rest my sorrow for ever.
Du bist die Ruh, du bist der Frieden, You are rest, you are peace,
Du bist vom Himmel mir beschieden. granted to me by heaven.
Daß du mich liebst, macht mich mir wert, That you love me justifies my self-worth,
Dein Blick hat mich vor mir verklärt, your gaze transfigures me;
Du hebst mich liebend über mich, lovingly you raise me to new heights,
Mein guter Geist, mein beßres Ich! my good spirit, my better self!
[2] Freisinn
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832)
Laßt mich nur auf meinem Sattel gelten! Let me prove myself when I’m in the saddle!
Bleibt in euren Hütten, euren Zelten! Stay in your huts and tents!
Und ich reite froh in alle Ferne, And happily I will ride out in all directions
Über meiner Mütze nur die Sterne. with only the stars above my cap.
Er hat euch die Gestirne gesetzt He has set out the stars
Als Leiter zu Land und See; as guiding lights over land and sea,
Damit ihr euch daran ergötzt, placed there for your delight
Stets blickend in die Höh. as you gaze up at them for ever.
Es grünet ein Nußbaum vor dem Haus, A walnut tree grows in front of the house,
Duftig, luftig breitet er blättrig die Blätter aus. fragrant, airily it spreads out its petalled leaves.
Viel liebliche Blüten stehen dran; Many lovely blossoms grow on it;
Linde Winde kommen, sie herzlich zu umfahn. gentle winds waft affectionately around it.
Sie flüstern von einem Mägdlein, They whisper of a girl who thought all night and day,
Das dächte die Nächte und Tage lang, wusste, ach! selber nicht was. but herself knew not of what.
Sie flüstern – wer mag verstehn so gar leise Weis’ – They whisper – but who could understand such a quiet song –
Flüstern von Bräut’gam und nächstem Jahr. of a bridegroom, and next year.
Das Mägdlein horchet, es rauscht im Baum; The girl listens, the tree murmurs,
Sehnend, wähnend sinkt es lächelnd in Schlaf und Traum. longing, thinking she sinks smiling into sleep and dream.
[4] Jemand
Wilhelm Gerhard (1780-1858), after Robert Burns (1759-96)
My heart is sair, I dare na tell –
mein Herz ist betrübt um jemand; My heart is sair for somebody;
ich könnte wachen die längste Nacht, I could wake a winter night
und immer träumen von jemand. For the sake o’ somebody.
O Wonne! Von jemand; o Himmel! Von jemand; Oh-hon! for somebody! Oh-hey! for somebody!
durchstreifen könnt’ ich die ganze Welt, I could range the world around,
aus Liebe zu jemand. For the sake o’ somebody.
Ihr Mächte, die ihr der Liebe hold, Ye powers that smile on virtuous love,
o lächelt freundlich auf jemand! O sweetly smile on somebody!
Beschirmet ihn, wo Gefahren droh’n; Frae ilka danger keep him free,
gebt sicher Geleite dem jemand! And send me safe my somebody.
O Wonne! dem jemand; o Himmel! dem jemand; Oh-hon! for somebody! Oh-hey! for somebody!
I wad, I wad, what wad I not,
für meinen jemand! For the sake o’ somebody.
Setze mir nicht, du Grobian, You oaf, don’t put the jug down so roughly
Mir den Krug so derb vor die Nase! right in front of my nose!
Wer mir Wein bringt, sehe mich freundlich an, Whoever brings me wine should look kindly on me,
Sonst trübt sich der Eilfer im Glase. otherwise your haste will spoil the wine.
Sie blüht und glüht und leuchtet She blooms and glows and shines
Und starret stumm in die Höh’; and gazes up silently at the sky;
Sie duftet und weinet und zittert she is fragrant, weeps and trembles
Vor Liebe und Liebesweh. for love and the pain of love.
[8] Talismane
Goethe
Ja, mein Herz es ist der Spiegel, Yes, my heart is the mirror,
Freund, worin du dich erblickst, friend, in which you see yourself;
Diese Brust, wo deine Siegel this breast, where your seal is imprinted,
Kuß auf Kuss hereingedrückt. kiss upon kiss.
Ich bin gekommen ins Niederland, Oh, I am come to the low countrie,
o weh! Och-on, och-on, och-rie!
So ausgeplündert haben sie mich, Without a penny in my purse
daß ich vor Hunger vergeh! To buy a meal to me.
Denn damals hatt’ ich zwanzig Küh’; For then I had a score o’ kye,
o weh! Och-on, och-on, och-rie!
Die gaben Milch und Butter mir, Feeding on yon hills so high,
und weideten im Klee. And giving milk to me.
Und sechzig Schafe hatt’ ich dort; And there I had three score o’ yowes,
o weh! Och-on, och-on, och-rie!
Die wärmten mich mit weichem Fliess Skipping on yon bonnie knowes,
bei Frost und Winterschnee. And casting woo’ to me.
So blieb’s, so blieb’s, bis Charlie Stuart kam, Till Charlie Stuart cam’ at last,
Alt-Schottland zu befrei’n; Sae far to set us free;
da mußte Donald seinen Arm ihm My Donald’s arm was wanted then
und dem Lande leih’n. For Scotland and for me.
Was sie befiel, wer weiß es nicht? Their waefu’ fate what need I tell?
Dem Unrecht wich das Recht, Right to the wrang did yield;
und auf Cullodens blut’gem Feld My Donald and his country fell
erlagen Herr und Knecht. Upon Culloden field.
O! Daß ich kam ins Niederland! Oh, I am come to the low countrie,
o weh! Och-on, ochon, och-rie!
Nun gibt’s kein unglücksel’ger Weib Nae woman in the warld wide
vom Hochland bis zur See! Sae wretched now as me.
Mutter, Mutter! seit ich ihn liebe Mother, mother, it is only when I began to love him
lieb’ ich erst dich sehr. that I loved you.
Laß mich an mein Herz dich zieh’n, Let me embrace you
und dich küssen, wie mich er! and kiss you, as he kisses me!
Mutter, Mutter! seit ich ihn liebe, Mother, mother, it is only when I began to love him
lieb’ ich erst dich ganz, that I have truly loved you
daß du mir das Sein verlieh’n, for having given me the being
das mir ward zu solchem Glanz. that now glows so radiantly within me
Mein Herz ist im Hochland, mein Herz ist nicht hier; My heart’s in the Highlands, my heart is not here;
Mein Herz ist im Hochland Im Waldes Revier; My heart’s in the Highlands, a-chasing the deer;
My heart’s in the Highlands wherever I go.
Leb’ wohl, mein Hochland, mein heimischer Ort! Farewell to the Highlands, farewell to the North,
The birthplace of valour, the country of worth!
I wander, wherever I rove,
The hills of the Highlands for ever I love.
Lebt wohl, ihr Berge, bedecket mit Schnee! Farewell to the mountains high covered with snow!
Farewell to the straths and green valleys below!
Lebt wohl, ihr Wälder, bemoostes Gestein, Farewell to the forests and wild-hanging woods!
Ihr stürzenden Bächlein im farbigen Schein! Farewell to the torrents and loud-pouring floods!
Mein Herz ist im Hochland, mein Herz ist nicht hier; My heart’s in the Highlands, my heart is not here;
Mein Herz ist im Hochland im Waldes Revier; My heart’s in the Highlands, a-chasing the deer;
My heart’s in the Highlands wherever I go.
Schelm, hast Äuglein schwarz wie Kohlen! Thou hast eyes like coals, revealing
Wenn du groß bist, stiehl ein Fohlen; How a foal thou’ll soon be stealing:
geh’ die Eb’ne ab und zu, Bravely to the valley go.
bringe heim ‘ne Carlisle Kuh! Thence bring home a Carlisle cow.
Mein Herz ist schwer! Auf! Von der Wand die Laute,- My soul is dark – Oh! quickly string
Nur sie allein mag ich noch hören, The harp I yet can brook to hear;
Entlocke mit geschickter Hand And let thy gentle fingers fling
Ihr Töne, die das Herz betören. Its melting murmurs o’er mine ear.
Kann noch mein Herz ein Hoffen nähren, If in this heart a hope be dear,
Es zaubert diese Töne her, That sound shall charm it forth again:
Und birgt mein trocknes Auge Zähren, If in these eyes there lurk a tear,
‘Twill flow, and cease to burn my brain.
Nur tief sei, wild der Töne Fluß, But bid the strain be wild and deep,
Und von der Freude weggekehret! Nor let thy notes of joy be first:
Ja, Sänger, daß ich weinen muß, I tell thee, minstrel, I must weep,
Sonst wird das schwere Herz verzehret! Or else this heavy heart will burst;
Denn sieh! Von Kummer ward’s genähret, For it hath been by sorrow nursed,
Mit stummen Wachen trug es lang, And ach’d in sleepless silence long;
Und jetzt vom Äußersten belehret, And now ‘tis doom’d to know the worst,
Da brech es oder heil im Sang. And break at once – or yield to song.
[16] Rätsel
Karl Friedrich Ludwig Kannegiesser (1781-1861),
after Catherine Maria Fanshawe (1765-1834)
Nur schwach klingt’s nach in des Echos Welle, And echo caught faintly the sound as it fell:
Und kommt es zur Fluth, so wird es stumm, On the confines of earth ‘twas permitted to rest,
And the depths of the ocean its presence confest.
Das Schlachtengewühl liebt’s, fliehet den Frieden, ‘Twill be found in the sphere when ‘tis riven asunder,
Es ist nicht Männern noch Frauen beschieden, Be seen in the lightning, and heard in the thunder.
Doch jeglichem Thier, nur mußt du’s sezieren, ‘Twas allotted to man with his earliest breath,
Nicht ist’s in der Poesie zu erspüren, Attends at his birth, and awaits him in death.
Die Wissenschaft hat es, vor allem sie, It presides o’er his happiness, honour and health,
Die Gottesgelahrtheit und Philosophie. Is the prop of his house and the end of his wealth:
Bei den Helden führt es den Vorsitz immer, Without it the soldier, the seaman may roam,
Doch mangelt’s den Schwachen auch innerlich nimmer, But woe to the wretch who expels it from home.
Es findet sich richtig in jedem Haus, In the whispers of conscience its voice will be found,
Denn ließe man’s fehlen, so wär es aus. Nor e’en in the whirlwind of passion be drown’d;
In Griechenland klein, an des Thiber Borden ‘Twill not soften the heart, and tho’ deaf to the ear,
‘Twill make it acutely and instantly hear.
Nor Tagus nor Tiber, nor Danube can boast it,
The Thames and the Rhine, and the Rhone have not lost it.
But in shade let it rest, like a delicate wreath –
Oh! breathe on it soft, it is but a (‘tis what?) It is but a breath.
Nun rasten hier, mein Gondolier, Now rest thee here, my gondolier,
Sacht, sacht! For up I go, hush, hush,
Ins Boot die Ruder! sacht! To climb yon light balcony’s height,
Doch du hältst unten Wacht, Ah! did we take for heav’n above
O wollten halb so eifrig nur But half the pains that we
Dem Himmel wir uns weih’n, Take day and night for woman’s love,
Als schöner Weiber Diensten trau’n, What angels we should be!
Wir könnten Engel sein! Sacht! Hush, hush, hush, hush.
Wie kann ich froh und munter sein O how can I be blythe and glad,
Or how can I be brisk and braw,
Der schmucke Junge, der mich liebt, When the bonny lad that I lo’e best
ist über die Berge weit, weit! Is o’er the hills and far awa’?
Was kümmert mich des Winters Frost, Its no the frosty winter wind,
und ob es draußen stürmt und schneit? Its no the driving drift and snaw;
Im Auge blinkt die Träne mir, But aye the tear comes in my e’e,
denk’ ich an ihn, der weit, weit! To think on him that’s far awa’.
Er hat die Handschuh’ mir geschenkt, My father pat me frae his door.
das bunte Tuch, das seid’ne Kleid; My friends they hae disown’d me a’,
But I hae ane will tak my part,
ist über die Berge weit, weit! The bonnie lad that’s far awa’.
Wie Nebel sind auch zerflossen Gone too, like the mist,
Die blauen Sternelein, are the blue stars
Die mir jene Freuden und Qualen that smiled those joys and sorrows
Gelächelt ins Herz hinein. into my heart.
[22] Niemand
Gerhard, after Burns
[23] Im Westen
Gerhard, after Burns
Ich schau’ über Forth hinüber nach Nord: Out over the Forth I look to the north,
was helfen mir Nord und Hochlands Schnee? But what is the north and its Highlands to me?
Was Osten und Süd, wo die Sonne glüht, The south nor the east gi’e ease to my breast,
das ferne Land und die wilde See? The far foreign land, or the wild-rolling sea.
Aus Westen winkt, wo die Sonne sinkt, But I look to the west, when I gae to rest,
was mich im Schlummer und Traume beglückt; That happy my dreams and my slumbers may be;
im Westen wohnt, der mir Liebe lohnt, For far in the west lives he I lo’e best,
mich und mein Kindlein ans Herz gedrückt. The lad that is dear to my baby and me.
Mir ist, als ob ich die Hände I feel as if I should place my hands
aufs Haupt dir legen sollt’, on your head,
betend, daß Gott dich erhalte praying that God will keep you
so rein und schön und hold. so pure and beautiful and gentle.
I send a greeting like the fragrance of roses,
Ich send’ ihn an ein Rosenangesicht. I send it to a rose-like face.
Ich sende einen Gruß wie Frühlingskosen, I send a greeting like springtime kisses,
I send it to eyes full of the light of spring.
Aus Schmerzensstürmen, die mein Herz durchtosen, And from the storms of sorrow that seethe in my heart,
I send a breath – may it not touch you harshly!
Wenn du gedenkest an den Freudelosen, When you think of my troubles
So wird der Himmel meiner Nächte licht. the sky of my nights brightens.
So oft sie kam, erschien mir die Gestalt Whenever she came to me, she looked so lovely,
So lieblich wie das erste Grün im Wald. like the first sight of green in the wood.
And when she spoke, she pierced my heart,
Süß wie des Frühlings erstes Lied im Hain. as sweetly as spring’s first song in the grove.
When she waved me farewell,
War’s, ob der letzte Jugendtraum mir schwand. it was as though the last dream of my youth was taking its leave of me.
Horch, o Sennin, wie dein Sang Herd-girl, hear how your song
In die Brust den Bergen drang, penetrates right into the mountains’ heart,
Wie dein Wort die Felsenseelen how the very souls of the rocks
Freudig fort und fort erzählen! joyously repeat your song!
Aber einst, wie alles flieht, But some time, since everything will pass,
Scheidet du mit deinem Lied, you and your song will depart,
Wenn dich Liebe forbewogen, when either love ensnares you,
Oder dich der Tod entzogen. or death claims you.
[31] 5. Einsamkeit
Lenau
So heiß und stumm, so trübe The night was so sultry and quiet,
So ganz wie unsre Liebe as was our love,
Zu Tränen nur gemacht. fit only for tears.
