1. OVERVIEW OF THE ORGANIZATION
1.1. How we get to the company.

First, in July 2022 TVTI Wood science technology department gave me the chance to find
internship hosting company by ourselves and give us the orientation about how to get and
contact companies to find suitable industry for my internship.

First we request companies are Gurmesa, Baisa and Simegn Wood and Metal Work Micro Small
Enterprise unfortunately they were not willing to host us. However, finally we got and contact
Gurmesa and Baisa host after they gave me permission to practice in their company, we
submitted my application letter and they give me letter of willingness. When we finish holistic
exam, based on our agreement, we started my internship activity on August 08/ 2022 to
September 30/2022 as Gregorian calendar.

2.2 Activities of the company we have been working in

After we assigned to work shop, for the first six weeks we were getting myself familiar with the
work shop, different types of drawings like: the structural, sanitary and develop my
communication skills with manager, supervisors and to all workers.

By doing this our supervisor give me an assignment to study the overall safety and health of our
work shop which is the basic and most important issue for a given project. We started to collect
some information about this from the workers such as:

 How many workers have the concept of safety and health?

 How many workers used safety shoes, hand gloves and eye goggles and etc.

 About their project quality which is prepared by some labor that the company allow to
work that place and give her all necessary resources like electricity power, telephone,
water, light around that city.

 The cost of these projects.

 What kind of measurements taken if a given worker injured in the work place.

17
 What kind of team work?

 What types of costumer to get that company?

 What types condition to work on that place

 What types of raw material (primary resource or secondary resource) to do

After we gather all answer for these questions, we took these issues with our work shop
supervisor and he solve some problems like the quality of the food improved and its price also
fair compare to the market condition and worker’s capacity.

The real structural design of the construct projects and by sharing their knowledge and
experience we also work with the supervisor, from the side of the skilled person, on the flow of
the work and practical situations of the ongoing furniture process. He also helps us to do quantity
surveying and specification works of the project.

2.3 Picture 1 practical area

18
2.3 The work piece or work tasks we have been executing

Our work task is to assist of the work shop on tasks to be implemented by checking designs, and
analyzing the design.

 The procedures we follow in performing our tasks are:

 Checking the design that comes from the design
 Preparing the working drawing in a simple way to be understandable for the workers.
 Cutting list
 Bill of material
 Giving the working drawings for the workers monitors such as the cutting part,
assembling part, finishing part and etc.
 Following up the execution of the tasks along with the order which work pieces or
work tasks we have been executing.
2.3.1 Office works
During the first six weeks we were getting our selves familiar with the overall construct works,
the structural and architectural drawings and staff members and my site supervisors.

The office tasks are done by the office Civil engineering faculty by referring to the working
drawings. There are a number of activities that are carried out by office Wood Science
Technology.

19
2.3.2 Quantifying works (take off)
My first real task was quantifying excavation volumes, form work area needed, reinforcement
bar needed in kg and the volume of work shop in order to cost raw material, finishing material,
other expenses. While quantifying these items of work we were reading the dimensions from the
structural drawings. Below are the procedures we followed while doing those tasks.

2.3.2 Organizational Workflow. (OWF)

It deals with the workflow and work division of the head office. On the top of the work chain,
there is the General Manager who is also the Owner of the company. Next in line is the Deputy

CHAPTER THREE
3. WHAT I HAVE LEARNED
3.1 OVER ALL BENEFITS GAINED FROM INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
In our internship program we developed a better understanding in our perspective wood science
technology field from theoretical concept to practical application. Our new point of view allowed
us to grasp many of the theoretical concepts that were introduced in the class. Internship program
is a method of letting the students to assume themselves as a potentially as a potentially
responsible workman for a particular work by assigning them to actively participating in
furniture making as well as consulting companies.
And such trends help us to have valuable work experience.
In this internship that means with in these forty-five (45) day we can observe what the out-side
construct world looks like more than we know when we were at school.
When we were at the school we learned or take many theoretical lessons even difficult to
understand theoretically.
Generally, we had gained benefits from the internship includes improving our practical skills,
theoretical knowledge, improving our interpersonal communication skills, improving our team
playing skills, improving leadership skills, understanding about work ethics and entrepreneurship
skills.
3.2 In terms of improving practical skills
 This program gave us many opportunities to test and refine our skills.
 All in our learning years our knowledge has been theoretical and Practical.
 This program has changed this and now we have developed practical knowledge which
helped us to build and improve our confidence.
 We were practically able to see how some furniture materials are managed and
Controlled in a way that is efficient and wastage reducing.
Controlling furniture materials starting from the time it is taken out of store up to
the time it is implemented on the work. Take off and quantity works can
be mentioned among such controlling methods.

21
 Some of the things that help us to improve our practical skill are
 Different site and tests are performed continuously that we have learned in theoretical
classes greatly helped us.
 The theoretical lessons helped us to understand the activities easily.
 Our ambition and enthusiasm for new ideas and things.
Duration of Internship

From the clients’ point of view, this strategy translates into benefits such as project cost

24
reduction, quality construction practices, reduction of set-up time for stake holders, increased site
safety and review of plans and schedule. In a nutshell, GB^S W^MW MSE will manage any of
its clients’ construction projects in complete, thoughtful efficient and cost-effective way.

works and manage laborers. The work progress will be conducted in a scientific way. Any
possible problem must be measure to avoid the probability problem to occur. The furniture

25
maker also responsible to check the quality of works that furniture. During The works include
like cutting, planning, assembling and sanding to accomplish the work.
3.6.5 In terms of upgrading our theoretical knowledge
While we have been doing the internship program, we get to know us courses deeply. We found
them to be more realistic, understandable as whole interesting.
We believe that we have upgraded our theoretical knowledge by working in work shop. Most of
the courses we take are in theory. They are not accompanied by practice. So this internship
program has helped us interrelate what we learned at TVTI in theory with the actual reality of the
construction industry. Theoretical knowledge is all about logic, calculation and principles.
Theories can be understood, but they can be forgotten if they are not supported by real
visualization. When we were working, we started to compare our theoretical knowledge to how
and why things are applied in practice. Generally, our theoretical knowledge has upgraded by
those practical techniques grasped in the Work shop.
3.6.6 In terms of interpersonal communication
 Since wood work is a team work by its nature will face different individuals with
different professions and personality come up together and communicate with each other
to solve different problems and run the whole work.
 We observed that Effective work flow can take place only when there is a continuous
communication and feedback for control purpose. And also if there is no effective
communication throughout the company it is very difficult to distribute different
instructions to the stakeholders in the organization.
 Through time we believed that good communication skill is the key for getting
the experience, knowledge and key to strengthen relationships of different staff members and
other executives. Based on this we tried to change our approach to the people at the work place.
We can say that we have improved the way of our communication with different staffs for the
sake of accomplishing our tasks during our stay for internship program.
3.6.7 In terms of improving team playing skills
We learn that as part of a team, a wood worker should have to works with a positive attitude with
in a group of person (team) with specific duties to be performed by each for the Completion of a
project.

26
We also observed that team playing skill of different agencies such as owner of the project,
consultant and contractors are important for the execution of the building project in working time
extension properly and effectively.
Team playing skills is also used for skill of working cooperatively with others, to share ideas,
discussing openly about problems and resolving conflict that may arise in the work shop.
Generally good team player processes the following skill
 Communicates constructively
 Listens actively
 Functions as an active participant
 Shares openly and willingly
 Cooperates and pitches in to help
 Exhibits flexibility
 Shows commitment to the team
 Works as a problem-solver
 Treats others in a respectful and supportive manner
3.6.8 In terms of improving leadership skills
Leadership is the responsibility for directing and coordinating the activities of subordinates
in order to accomplish original objectives.
Good leadership is vital for the construction industries development as well as to the economical
Construct. If there is a good leadership throughout the company, the following things are done
smoothly
 Wastage of materials and labor is controlled
 Proper co-ordination between all the categories of person will be improved.
 The quality of products and workmanship will be better.
 Work is properly executed as per specifications.
 The work can be finished as per the specified period of time.
Also, Leadership requires being patient, wise and orator. This type of leader will manifest the
spirit of work in the work shop and prepare a comfortable environment for the workers to do
their job. As a whole to make the workers work inspiration high.
The other lesson we get from leadership is division of work for different workers for fast making
furniture of in the work shop. While leading the leader have to always advice and encourage the

27
workers to be punctual, transparent to the work. While we say this, the leader him/her self should
act upon the rules he /she demanded to be fulfilled. This will help for the effectiveness of the
work. Sticking together and helping each other while working is also another best way for
guaranteeing the healthy communication and leadership manifested over the site for proper
proceeding of the work.
Generally, in our training we experienced leadership management in conjunction with our
management staffs, like controlling mechanisms of project activities in all aspects by different
level of management staffs.
3.6.9 In terms of Improving Work Ethics
In our internship program we improved our work ethics by working the task with a smooth
relationship with the staff members, with our friends and with our supervisor. We respect all the
staff members in particular the company community. We were punctual and honesty to work our
task effectively and efficiently we also understood what work ethics means. It is being;
 Punctuality and effective for time management.
 Responsibility and accountability to a given task.
 Keeping company secrets.
 Transparency in working once duty.
 Respecting and friendship building with your work partners, etc.

3.6.10 In terms of entrepreneurship skills

It is the ability to create one’s own share company or any other kind of business with others and
taking risks. Also Entrepreneurship is a special human talent that helps to manage human,
financial, physical (material and equipment) resources and be productive and profitable.
We have been able to learn more in terms of human resource management how skilled labor
were evaluated to check their performance and if they are found effective the employer gives
reward in terms of payment this helps to increase the motivation of workers.
Construction equipment management helps to plan, implement, and monitor construction
equipment to
 Enhance optimum utilization
 Increase efficiency or productivity of imputes to the products of the construction
 Harmonize standards and enhance the quality of work

28
 An entrepreneur should have to decide the proper ratio of percentage of worker and
machinery for a given work.
From this program we got a chance to know how we become entrepreneurship person and we
had motivation to create our work rather than wait government hand.
Their fore we had gone as the following with description. A skill is simply knowledge which is
demonstrated by action. It is an ability to perform in a certain way. Turning an idea into reality
calls upon two sorts of skills, these are:
I. General management skills and
II. People management skills
I) General Management Skills: - These are skills required to organize the physical and
financial resources needed to run the venture. Some of the most important general
management business skills are: -
 Strategy Skills: - We get an ability to consider the business as a whole, to
understand how it fits within its market place, how it can organize itself to deliver
value to its customers, and the ways in which it does this better than its competitors.
 Planning Skills: -we get an ability to consider what the future might offer, how it
will impact on the business and what needs to be done to prepare for it now.
 Marketing Skills: -we get an ability to see past the firm’s offerings and their features,
to be able to see how they satisfy the customer’s needs and why the customer finds
them attractive.
 Financial Skills: - we get an ability to manage money; to be able to keep track of
expenditure and to monitor cash-flow, but also an ability to assess investments in
terms of their potential and their risks.
 Project Management Skills: -we get an ability to organize projects, to set specific
objectives, to set schedules and to ensure that the necessary resources are in the right
plat of the right time.
 Time Management Skills: -we get an ability to use time productively, to be able to
priorities important jobs and to get things done to schedule.
II) People Management Skills: We get businesses are made by people. A business can only
be successful if the peoples who make it up are properly directed and are committed to make
an effort on its behalf. An entrepreneurial venture also needs the support of people from

29
outside the organization such as customers, suppliers and investors. To be effective, an
entrepreneur needs to demonstrative a wide variety of skills in the way he/she deals with
other peoples. Some of the more important skills we might include under this heading are:
 Communication Skills: - we get an ability to use spoken and written language to
express
 Ideas and inform others.
 Leadership Skills: - we get an ability to inspire people to work in a specific way and
to undertake the tasks that are necessary for the success of the venture.
 Motivation Skills: - we get ability to those people and get them to give their full
commitment to the tasks in hand. Being able to motivate demands an understanding
of what drives people and what they expect from their jobs.
 Delegation Skills: - we get an ability to allocate tasks to different people. Effective
delegation involves more than instructing. It demands a full understanding of the
skills that people possess how they use them and how they might be developed to
fulfill future needs.
 Negotiation Skills: - we get an ability to understand what is wanted from situations,
what is motivating others in that situation and recognize the possibilities of
maximizing the outcomes for all parties.
All these different people skills are interrelated. Here entrepreneurial performance results
from a combination of industry knowledge, general management skills; people skills and
personal.
The successful entrepreneur must not only use these skills but learn to use them and to learn
from using them. Entrepreneurs should constantly avoid
their abilities in these areas, recognize their strengths and weaknesses, and plan how to
develop these skills in the future.
3.7 Experience we get out of it

We gained experience from: -

 Using our time wisely/properly.

 The experiences we have got from the job are using our time, getting knowledge and
skills and we have changed our behavior with changing our serves economically.

30
 To creating some works job we have created work for others for employee.
 Doing some by confidence makes some things easy.
 Saving is good to arrive where ever we want our goal.
 If we use saving properly we can improve our serves and has many advantage these
advantages are: -
 The loaners increase his/her output.
 A person who have loaned the money can change his/her self.
 The difference loan gets from this work makes/create job for others.
 For the future they can change their serves and their countries.
 These makes as the ability to make something.
 The Additional of these changes are make the development of the country.
 If the learner bodies/scholars use their forces, Skills, knowledge and time wisely
they competitive with the world.
 Industriousness can change a person.
 The hate of work can fail as the poverty.
3.7.1 The difference between the Work place environment. (WPE)
Environment of work place of the institution

 Reclining units: - Beds, divans, daybeds, etc, divans is a type of bed with no boards
 Storage units: - Cabinets, chests, side boards, wardrobes, book cases, wall fitments

grown through a time by finance, by manpower it manages, by service it gives, by its brands, etc.
However, the company didn’t grow financially as much as it should grow really when we
compare to the time it started with the finance it has today. The main problem is the way they
present their product to the market. The time we exist in is the time that technology is growing
rapidly by any means especially related with market. What I went to say is as technology grows
through a time, there will be different opportunity around market, because promoting the
products by different media made great influence on who didn’t promote their brands. So GB&S

CHAPTER FIVE
5. RECOMMENDATION AND CONCLUSIONS
5.1 Conclusion
In review this internship program has been an excellent and rewarding experience we have been
able to meet and network with so many people that we are sure will be able to help us with
opportunities in the future. The internship program also alleviates the problems of new graduate
students/trainee that may face after their graduates and makes so good for the new curriculum to
expose students/trainee to real world before the candidates complete their courses.

Now a day, furniture is the most undertaking investment in Ethiopia.

There are many companies which work on furniture. These companies may be consultants, in
which the design, the wood furniture, metal furniture, sofa furniture, ceramic furniture and
mechanical are made and constructors, which change the design on paper into something
tangible.

Most of the companies were voluntary to accept intern students these companies in particular are
the worker. In our case, GB^SW^MW MSE is good hosting company for the interns.

The project somehow interesting and new design technology which we have enjoyed. The
projects are located in kombosha city.

There are two main things that the construct furniture is graded to the quality management and
completion.

In the quality assurance part, it has strong and skilled manpower which is continually addressing
in its projects. The manpower includes the project manager, general Foreman and skilled
manpower such as furniture’s, lamination, electrician and finishing worker.

All the listed working classes of the contractor with the help of head office make the
implementation process accurate and reliable.

Since it as different experiences for more than seven years, the quality of the works is step by
step increased in to the positions it has now.

36
In this internship period, we had the opportunity to improve both our practical skills and
theoretical knowledge with my endeavour and the help of the workers in the company.

During our stay in the company, we could learn how to communicate with workers. Furthermore,
we could improve our inter-personal communication skills. Besides we were able to understand
work ethical related issues such as punctuality, reliability, efficiency, etc. On top of these, we
learned how to come up with a solution when challenges are facing during working time and we
also improved our team playing and leadership skills. We assure that the skill we gained in the
internship will actually help me to be efficient when we get into work after graduation, because
we were already familiar with the skill, which are essential in the working environment.
Therefore, we appreciate the institute keep up with giving the internship for the rest of student
who come after us.

This MSE the individual entrepreneur because they an individual entrepreneur is someone who
started; acquired or franchised his/her own independent organization. The major portion of this
module is also devoted to describe the basic features and activities of the individual entrepreneur.
Even though there was a gap between the things which we know in the class with the outside
environment, we got practical work experiences and benefits at W^MW MSE Construct
furniture PLC
Company Some of the benefits of the internship offered to us include;
 Allow us to both make and develop professional contacts, for our future job search.
 Assist us in developing greater understanding of our own strength and weakness,
 The company’s Work flow
 Upgrade our theoretical knowledge at school
 Knowing the local construct terms
 Knowing Working standards

5.2. Recommendation

Finally, we have been working in GB^SW^MW MSE work shop for about one full month and
two weeks/45/ days in the work shop and office as a practicing undergraduate wood science
technology.

During we were in the work shop and office, we have got the chance to look, learn and engage in
almost all of project designer practical things as far as our knowledge permits.

37
During the internship period, we have passed too interesting and up gradable.

Generally, wood work needs especial care and devotion because any careless can cause extra
cost and affects construct furniture schedule time as well as the overall wood work management.

we have seen different problems like:

 The existence of idea divergence between the shareholder, and this will affect the wood
worker schedule of project.
 Due to several factors, the construct furniture schedule is not maintained
 The design problem (architectural design) could not match with interest of the customer.
During construct, the worker was not properly follows the drawing, which would bring
structural and aesthetic problems.
 Due to the above mentioned problems and others, especial attention should be taken by
the concerned body.
 They must use dry wood for quality.
 They must use 5S on this generation in case of learned generation.
 They must use KAIZEN
 They must not miss work in case of holiday at the future.
 They must separate the place of cutting, planning, sanding, assembling, painting and
finishing.
 They must cost calculate on each project daily.

5.2.1 Recommendation for the TVTI

TVTI are providing good opportunities for students/trainee in this internship program.
But we would like to recommend our TVTI to do the following during the whole academic
session.
 Depended on practical skill concerned courses before the internship program.
 It should include some software courses in to the whole department Programs of AUTO
CADE courses.
 The teaching learning method shall be more practical other than theoretical,
For that to make the students/trainee full confidential and good professional in the
Field of study.

38
 To studies student/trainee how to do internship before the internship programs on each
the subject to find practical skills and give the module for full information on it.
