So ruhten im Busch auch Rehe gepaart,
selbst wilde Fchse und Wlfe:
Nahrung brachte zum Neste das Mnnchen,
das Weibchen sugte die Welpen.
Da lernt ich wohl was Liebe sei:
der Mutter entwandt ich die Welpen nie.
Wo hast du nun, Mime,
dein minniges Weibchen,
da ich es Mutter nenne?
Mime (rgerlich)
Was ist dir Thor? Ach, bist du dumm!
Bist doch weder Vogel noch Fuchs?
Siegfried Das zullende Kind
zogest du auf,
wrmtest mit Kleiden den kleinen Wurm:
wie kam dir aber der kindische Wurm?
Du machtest wohl gar ohne Mutter mich!
Mime (in groer Verlegenheit)
Glauben sollst du, was ich dir sage:
ich bin dir Vater und Mutter zugleich.
Siegfried Das lgst du, garstiger Gauch!
Wie die Jungen den Alten gleichen,
das hab ich mir glcklich ersehn.
Nun kam ich zum klaren Bach:
da erspht ich die Bum und Thier im Spiegel;
Sonn und Wolken, wie sie nur sind,
im Glitzer erschienen sie gleich.
Da sah ich denn auch mein eigen Bild;
ganz anders als du dnkt ich mir da:
so glich wohl der Krte ein glnzender Fisch;
doch kroch nie ein Fisch aus der Krte!
Mime (hchst rgerlich)
Grulichen Unsinn kramst du da aus!
Siegfried (immer lebendiger)
Siehst du, nun fllt auch selbst mir ein,
was zuvor umsonst ich besann:
wenn zum Wald ich laufe, dich zu verlassen,
wie das kommt, kehr ich doch heim?
(Er springt auf.)
Von dir erst mu ich erfahren,
wer Vater und Mutter mir sei!
Mime Was Vater! Was Mutter!

(Siegfried springt auf Mime, und fasst ihn bei der
Kehle.)
Siegfried So mu ich dich fassen,
um was zu wissen:

Siegfried A whimpering child,
broughtst thou me up,
warmly thou clothedst the tiny mite:
whence came to thee then the childish mite?
A motherless babe hast thou made alone?
Mime (in great embarrassment)
Thou must trust whatever I tell thee:
I am thy father and mother in one.
Siegfried Thou liest, thou loathsomest imp!
How all young ones are like the parents,
right well have I seen for myself.
I came to the limpid stream:
there I looked on the trees and forest creatures;
sun and shadows, een as they are,
I saw there below in the brook.
And there in the stream I saw my face;
but not like to thine looked it to me:
so like to a toad were a glittering fish;
yet fish neer had toad for a father.
Mime (much vexed)
Pitiful nonsense pratest thou there!
Siegfried (with growing animation)
Look thou, I grasp myself the thing
that so oft I pondered in vain:
when through woods afar I roam to escape thee,
why to thee still I return.
(He springs up.)
Tis thou alone who canst tell me
what father and mother are mine!
Mime What father? What mother?
Idlest of questions!
(Siegfried springs upon Mime and seizes him by
the throat.)
Siegfried Then so must I grip thee,
knowledge to gain me:
