Preface
Even today, this song, which is very popular in
South Africa, has lost none of its emotional
significance. Even after the end of apartheid, Thula
sizwe continues to be seen as a mirror of the
thoughts and feelings of the black population of
South Africa. It is still the case that a painful
separation exists between the numerous ethnic
groups in South Africa. The newly added part of
the song places it in this current context by
articulating the dream of building bridges between
the different cultures.
Effective support for part A of the song (bars 3–20)
can be provided by a low accompanying drum and
a calabash (rattle).

Vorwort
Dieses in Südafrika sehr populäre Lied hat auch
heute nichts von seiner emotionalen Bedeutung
verloren. Selbst nach dem Ende der Apartheid wird
Thula sizwe weiterhin als Spiegel der Gedan-
ken und Gefühle der schwarzen Bevölkerung Süd-
afrikas verstanden. Noch immer herrscht eine
schmerzliche Trennung der zahlreichen ethnischen
Gruppen in Südafrika vor. Der dem Song neu hin-
zugefügte Teil (Takt 22 ff) stellt das Lied in diesen
aktuellen Kontext und artikuliert den Traum eines
Brückenschlages der Kulturen.
Eine tiefe Begleittrommel und eine Calabash (Rassel)
kann den A-Teil des Liedes (Takte 3–20) wirkungsvoll
unterstützen.
