Programme Overview
The Executive Programme in Healthcare Management (EPHM) from the
Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (IIM Calcutta) offers a
cutting-edge, multi-disciplinary education for healthcare professionals. The
programme will give participants a rigorous and comprehensive exposure to
healthcare management, engaging with developments and debates in global
health, Indian healthcare industry, public health perspectives, and health
systems management.
All modules will draw on IIM Calcutta’s core strengths in managerial
competencies in the domains of leadership, organisational design, strategy,
marketing, managerial communication, operations management, economics,
human resources management, finance and accounting, and information
systems. Each module is designed to meet the needs of future managers,
analysts, entrepreneurs, and leaders in a range of organisations in the
healthcare sector, including hospitals, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, public
health organisations, and healthcare consultants. The course also enables the
participants with the opportunity to interact with healthcare industry experts
through guest lectures.

Programme Curriculum
The programme blends academic expertise and practitioners’ experiences to
equip participants with the necessary managerial skills that would be helpful for
them in healthcare settings. The pedagogy introduces participants to
contemporary conversations across different sectors and in different regions
(national and global), while creating spaces for participants to draw on their
experiences as healthcare professionals. Sessions will be delivered by IIM Calcutta
faculty and select experienced industry experts.

The programme is designed around three core axes:

Healthcare Context Module:

This module provides an overview of the global and Indian healthcare landscape,
including healthcare systems, regulatory and ethical issues, and public policies in
different countries. The module enables the participants to develop a comparative
perspective to healthcare systems as well as to understand the underlying
socio-political choices.

Sector-specific Module:

The module covers topics such as operational aspects of hospital planning and
structure, quality and accreditation, the use of data and technology in healthcare
organisations, and the economics of the healthcare sector that are of relevance to
managers of healthcare organisations.

Functional Module:

This module provides exposure to knowledge of a breadth of functional


management domains such as marketing, organisational design, strategic
management, human resources management, leadership, conflict and
negotiation, operations management (supply chain, project management),
accounting, and finance. Participants will explore how foundational management
principles from these functional domains can be applied in the healthcare sector.

In addition, there will be sessions to strengthen individual competencies like


communication and basic statistical skills.

Capstone Project

This component engages participants in teams on projects that are of their


specific interest. This project complements classroom sessions and allows
participants to draw on multiple tools and concepts learned across modules.
Pedagogy
The programme will be highly experiential and interactive, comprising participant
presentations and discussions, case studies, classroom lectures, and
presentations by experts.

Programme Delivery
• The sessions will be delivered through the online platform and through
face-to-face sessions at IIM Calcutta campus.
• Participants will attend the online classes from their laptop/desktop/
mobile (D2D).
• Campus module will however remain compulsory for all.
• Study material for international participants will be sent electronically.

Campus Immersion
There will be 2 campus immersions of 5 days each at IIM Calcutta, which will be
scheduled towards the beginning and at the end of the programme, respectively

It is mandatory for participants to attend all campus visits for the successful
completion of the programme. The campus visit will be conducted subject to the
evolving pandemic situation and will depend on government and institute
regulations, advisories, and guidelines related to the pandemic. In case the
campus module is not confirmed due to any reason, the same will be included in
the total number of online sessions.
Who Should Attend?
Healthcare professionals in general, and specifically, hospital administrators, doctors,
professionals from medical and allied sectors such as pharmaceuticals and medical
insurance as well as healthcare entrepreneurs.

Eligibility Criteria
• Medical practitioners and administrators with MBBS/BDS/BAMS degree or equivalent
recognised by UGC/AICTE/MCI or equivalent. Students with biotechnology and
biomedical background (bachelor’s degree or above) are also eligible to apply.
• Applicants should have minimum three years of experience* in healthcare sector as
on application closure date.
• Applicants from other disciplinary backgrounds shall also be eligible, provided they
have minimum five years of experience in healthcare sector as on application closure
date.
• All applicants need to have minimum 50% marks [aggregate – considering results of
all years] in graduation/post-graduation.

*Internships and trainee experiences will not be considered as full-time work experience.

Admission Criteria
The selection will be based on candidate’s
profile evaluation – educational qualification,
allied experience, Statement of Purpose –
subject to meeting eligibility criteria.

Attendance Criteria
A minimum of 75% attendance is a prerequisite
for the successful completion of the
programme.
Assessment & Evaluation
• Continuous evaluation components consisting of class participation, case
discussions, assignments, quiz, project presentations, written tests, and final online
examination.
• Examination/evaluation shall be conducted by IIM Calcutta.
• Examinations shall be conducted with the support of Times Edutech and Events
Limited (TEEL). Evaluation will be held for individual modules, but not for modules
that are held on campus.
• For modules that are evaluated, participants will be given any one of the following
grades: “Excellent”, “Good”, “Fair” and “Poor”.
• Giving feedback is an integral part of the completion requirements of the
programme.

Certification*
• Candidates will successfully complete the programme if they have met the
attendance criteria and have received ‘poor’ grades in not more than two courses.
• Successful candidates will receive a ‘Certificate of Completion’ from IIM Calcutta.
• Those with requisite participation but unable to complete successfully will receive a
‘Certificate of Participation’.
• Successful participants will also be accorded IIM Calcutta Executive Education Alumni
status.

Programme Directors’ Profiles

Rajesh Bhattacharya is a Professor in the multi-disciplinary


Public Policy and Management group at IIM Calcutta. He
studied Economics at Presidency College and the University
of Calcutta and obtained his Ph.D. in Economics from the
University of Massachusetts, Amherst, USA. At IIM Calcutta,
he teaches courses like Indian Economic and Political

PROFESSOR RAJESH History, Politics of Development, Theories of Public Policy,


BHATTACHARYA and Environmental Governance, etc.

The unorganised or the informal sector of the economy


constitutes his enduring research interest. However, he has
also worked on critical analysis of public policies related to
property rights, migration, education, welfare, urban issues,
etc. At IIM Calcutta, he has worked on internally and
externally funded research projects as well as on
consultancy projects on diverse topics like education,
migration, unorganised sector, handloom industry, state
finances of West Bengal, etc. He has also designed, directed,
and taught executive education and training programmes
for senior managers in the private sector, healthcare sector
professionals, and administrative staff of government
departments.
Devi Vijay is a Professor at IIM Calcutta. Devi’s research
explores questions of inequality, institutions, and collective
action, with a focus on healthcare. For more than a decade,
she has studied various aspects of community-based
palliative care provision in Kerala and its translations to
other geographies in India.

PROFESSOR DEVI
VIJAY She has co-edited ‘Alternative Organizations in India:
Undoing Boundaries’ [Cambridge University Press, 2018]
and has published in journals such as the Journal of Business
Ethics, Organisation, Journal of Service Research
(forthcoming), Gender Work & Organization, Public
Management Review, M@n@gement, Marketing Theory, and
the Journal of Marketing Management. Devi is a Senior Editor
at Management and a member of the Editorial Board of
Management Learning. She was a Fulbright-Nehru
Postdoctoral Research Fellow (2016-2018) affiliated with the
Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University,
New York.
