1.0 INTRODUCTION: ATABA KINGDOM of Nigeria propose to undertake the
engineering design and construction of Ataba Community Water Project in
Andoni, Rivers State

The client, through RIVCOM INTEGRATED SERVICE, commissioned AGURA

GEOTECHNICAL ENTERPRISE, to examine the sub-surfaces strata of soils in
the proposed area and determine the extent of each soils as well as procure
representative samples of soils for investigation. This report therefore
present a description of field activities and results of laboratory tests carried
out at the proposed site area.

2.0 SCOPE OF WORK: The purpose of the Geotechnical investing is to carry out
field tests, Laboratory work, determine and analyze Geotechnical
parameters from these tests and provide useful data for the design and
construction of foundations for the structure on site.

2.1 Description of Works: The execution of work was carried out in three phases
as follows:

(a) Field Work

(b) Laboratory Tests

(c) Analysis of Result

2.02 Site Description: The site is located at Ataba Community in Andoni, Rivers
State. The Location is an undulating island.

3.0 GEOLOGY: The area investigated falls within the sedimentary basin know as
the Niger Delta. The Niger Delta occurs at the southern end of Nigeria
bordering the Atlantic Ocean. It is characterized by sans, clay and mangrove
swamp forest. The proto delta developed in the northern part of the basin
during the companion transgression ended with the Paleocene transgression
while the modern delta began during the Eocene.

Three major depositional environments, namely: the Benin, Agbada and

Akata formations characterize the Niger Delta.
3.01 Local Geology: The Area investigated falls within the Benin formation. The
Benin formation consists of alternating layers of sand, sand stones, sandy
clays, clay and slit. The sandy components on most of the areas forms more
than 90% of the sequence of the layers, therefore, permeability and storage
co-efficient are high.

4.0 METHODOLOGY

4.01 Boring: Execution of two (2) geotechnical boreholes to a maximum depth of

thirty meters below the existing ground level.

The shell and Auger boring technique was the basic method used for the
boring on the site, disturbed soil samples were regularly collected from the
cohesive layers within the test boreholes at selected depth with specially
designed sampler. Also, undisturbed soil samples were taken. Samples were
taken as depths intervals of 2m in sand and or where there is a change of soil
type or strata. The soil samples were examined and classified, and further
logged the borehole depth for soil stratification sequence.

4.02 Standard Penetration Test (SPT)

A spilt barrel thick wall sampler (split spoon) of about 35mm internal
diameter at driven 450mm into the ground by repeated blows from a trip
hammer weighing 65kg and falling through 760mm.

The Standard Penetration Test resistance or N value, is the number of blows

requited to drive the sample through a full distance of 1000mm after intial
penetration of 150mm. The N value gives an empirical measure of the soil
constituency and is also used to estimate the beating Capacity and
compressibility of granular soils. The cutting shoe is often replaced with a
solid cone for use on gravel. The test can also be used to provide to the
relative strength of weather rock. The following table gives a guide to the
constituency of granular and cohesive soils in terms of N value.

4.03 Water Table:

As at time exploration water table was encounter at 2.6m below the existing
ground level in borehole 2 and 0.8m in borehole 1.
5.0 DUTCH CONE PENETRATION TEST

The cone penetration test consists of a steel frame with a driving head which
is carrying a hydraulic jack. The driving head can be raised or lowered by a
manually operated winch or motor driving hydraulic ram. The cone assembly
is driving into the ground by means of steel rods, connected lengths by
lengths into the driving head. These rods are protected from friction with the
soil by an outer tube which is added in similar length during penetration. The
cone, rods and outer tubes are pushed together into the ground for a
distance of 25cm. The driving pressure is then applied into the inner rods
only and the cone is advanced independently of the tubes of a distance of
about 4cm of a rate of about 1cm/sec. The pressure required to advance the
cone is transmitted through the capsule in the driving head to a gauge and
the penetration resistance registered on the gauge is recorded. The
penetrometer machine is capable of recording skin friction value of the
material by advancing a friction jacket behind the cone. The outer tube is
then advanced a further 25cm where the next reading on the same operation
is carried out and value recorded. The procedure is repeated until the
required depth is reached or until the total resistance to penetration of the
capacity of the machine is reached.

6.0 LABORATORY TESTS

6.01 The following classes of laboratory tests were carried out on selected soil
samples recovered from the boreholes l. These tests were carried out in
accordance with the specification contained in B.S. 1377, titled "British
Method of Test for Soils for Civil Engineering purposes" and ASTM standards.

6.02 Soil Classification be Tests: These were carried out on disturbed samples.
These includes the determination in or natural moisture content, Atterberg
Limit, Sieve we analysis.

6.03 Soil Strength Test: These involve essential the determination of relevant
strength parameters of undisturbed cohesive samples through the
unconsolidated undrained (UU) Triaxial in Compression to Test.
6.04 Soil Deformation Tests: These are determination of consolidation
characteristics through the odometer Test.
6.0 ANALYSIS OF RESULTS:

7.0 ALLOWABLE SOIL BEARING CAPACITY:

The strength of the soil near the surface was obtained from the untrained
unconsolidated Triaxial test report. The average value of the cohesion and
the angle of internal friction was used. The allowable bearing capacity of the
soil is calculated using the Terzaghi’s equation for strip footing, and with a
factor of safety of 3.0

QU = C(NC) + Y.DF.(Nq) + ½. Y.b (Nr) kN/m2

Where:
Qu = Ultimate bearing capacity (kN/m2)
C = Cohesion
Y = Unit weight of soil (kN/m3)
Df = Depth of Foundation (m)
NC = Bearing capacity Factor which depends on the ɵ
Nq = Bearing capacity Factor which depends on the ɵ
Nr = Bearing capacity Factor which depends on the ɵ
© = Angle of internal Friction.
For a strip footing 1m wide, at a depth of 1m, Ultimate bearing capacity, QU =
219kN/m2, Applying factor of safety of 3, allowable bearing capacity of 73kN/m2 is
obtained.

For Borehole 2 for a strip footing 1.5m wide at a depth of 1.5m, ultimate bearing
capacity, QU = 228kN/m2, Applying factor of safety of 3, allowable bearing capacity
of 76kN/m2 is obtained.

Considering settlements, consolidation test carried out shows that coefficient of

volume change M V in the range of 300-600kN is about 6.46 E-06, while the
coefficient of consolidation CV is 713.13m2
8.0 CONCLUSION

The soil has an allowable bearing capacity at 1.1m depth of 75 kN/m2

This soil can support a shallow foundation for the proposed structure depending
on the load.

From the CPT test result, refusal was met at a depth of 8.4m with a cone resistance
of 17,168 kN/m2.

Applying a factor of safety of 3.0, QC = 5,722 kN/m2

Result obtained from the grain size analysis on disturbed soil samples collected
from the site shows that area investigation is both clay and sand mixture.

We recommend strip foundation in this Site.

Additional cover should also be provided for all reinforcement bars to avoid
corrosion since the water table is expected to rise during the rains.

We strongly recommend that the design and construction of all foundations be

carried out in accordance with good engineering practice embodied in recognized
codes of practice such as British Standard Institution.

We trust you will find this report of assistance and ensure you of our prompt
attention at all times.

Find attached summary of test and results.

Thanks.
