UNTERNEHMEN KONRAD II

(Operation Conrad II – The relieve of BUDAPEST JAN 1945)

Background

Operation KONRAD was a German-Hungarian ‘TRIO’ of operations in effort to relieve the encircled
garrison of BUDAPEST during the BATTLE OF BUDAPEST in January 1945. The operation was
divided into three parts:

 Operation KONRAD I - 1 January 1945 - Led by IV SS Panzer Corps from TÁTA. Halted
near BISCKÉ.
 Operation KONRAD II - 7 January 1945 - Led by IV SS Panzer Corps from ESZTERGÒM. Halted
at PILISSZENTKÉESZT.
 Operation KONRAD III - 17 January 1945 - Led by IV SS Panzer Corps and III Panzer
Corps from south of BUDAPEST near SZÉKESFEHÉVÁR. Attempt to encircle
ten Soviet divisions. Halted south of ERCSI.

Marshal Tolbukhin commanding the 3rd UKRANIAN FRONT was assaulting the Hungarian capital of
BUDAPEST from early January 1945.
Description:
The table is set on the 9th of January and SS-Obergruppenführer und General der Waffen SS
Herbert Gille is pushing his remaining amour forward in 3 Ad-Hoc Kampfgruppen, towards the 3
soviet defensive lines in the vicinity of BAJNA and TARJÁN.
The Game
The starting weather is winter and counts as precipitating. Events with clear weather only may not
be played. invoking any phase cost an extra OP – over and above its normal cost.
Overcast means Events with clear weather only may not be played.
Clear weather has no effect on the game.
In turn 4 and 11 the side who’s turn it is roll a D6 for a weather change:
on a roll of: 1-3 the weather stays precipitating. 4-5 the weather changes to overcast. on a 6 the
weather becomes clear.
The 5 Objective squares are denoted by red army stars.
The snow dunes are snowy hollows and count as soft ground.
The winter rivers are frozen units can cross the river at any point, but crossing it is like moving
into non open terrain, units can only move a maximum of 1 square.
Additionally, any unit other than leg units attacking across the river is vulnerable in combat. Units
cannot cross the river using road movement. Supply lines can cross the river anywhere.
Supply lines cannot cross minefields.
The Germans cannot use the Igelstellungen event in this scenario.
Victory:
The game is a standard single day of 16 moves. The Germans need to be holding 3 or more
objectives at the end of the 16th turn to win. Any other result is a Soviet victory.
Starting Ops:
The Soviets start with 3 Ops and the Germans start with 8 Ops. Both sides use their late war ops.
Units:
The 3rd UKRANINAN FRONT has 6 defending elements.
The defending elements are from the 46th Army and includes; 110th Tank army,34th Guards Rifle
Division, 49th Guards Rifle Division, 86th Rifle Division, 93rd Rifle Division, 99th Rifle Division.
The Soviet 3rd UKRAINIAN FRONT have 7 minefields and 10 defensive positions markers from the
start of the game.
These may only be deployed form the start of the game.
The attacking German IV SS Panzer Korps have 4 Elements, Divided into 3 axis of advance. First
the 3rd Waffen SS PzDiv ‘TOTENKOPF’ consisting of KG Friessner and KG Schneider. Second the 5 th
Waffen SS PzDiv ‘WIKING’ consisting of KG Meier and KG Bauer. The 3 axis of advance is
undertaken by KG Müller.
The German IV SS has the 6th PzDiv in reserve as breakthrough force.
Set up
The Soviets set up hidden first.
The Germans have the first turn.
Scenario rule for reconnaissance units: Forward Line Own Troops (FLOT) depicts the furthest any
unit may occupy. Reconnaissance units may advance 1 SQUARE in front of FLOT.
The Russians set up in 2 lines of defense. The 86th, 93rd, 99th Infantry divisions in front at FLOT
(forward Line Own Troops) along the river.
The 110th Tank Brigade, 34th Guards Rifle Division and 49th Guards Rifle Division set up no more
than 3 squares from any table edge
The German 6th PzDiv starts with all its units at a table edge.
Reinforcements:
The Soviet Reserve units are 18th Tank Corps and 40th Guards Rifle Division. Arriving around the
Russian base possible from turn 8, as follows: in turn 8 the soviet reserves are ready to deploy on
a roll of 6, in turn 10 on a roll of 5-6, in turn 12 on a roll of 2-3-4-5-6
in adition a roll of 1 in turn 10 or 12 means the reserves will not arrive before in turn 14.
The German breakthrough follow up force is elements of the 8 th PzDiv with KG Harder and KG
Jürgens arriving from any of the German table edges. The units arrive as follows: in turn 5 the
follow up force are ready to deploy on a roll of 6, in turn 7 on a roll of 5-6, in turn 9 on a roll of 2-
3-4-5-6
in addition, a roll of 1 in turn 5 or 7 means the reserves will not arrive before in turn 13.
