Anleitung
F4-U CORSAIR
Für Viertaktmotoren bis ca. 20 cm³ Hubraum
Made in China
Vorsicht!
Modellfliegen will gelernt sein!
Schutzhandschuhe tragen! In

Be sure to read right through the instructions covering assembly and operation of
your model before you attempt to operate it for the first time.
These safety notes are an integral part of the instructions. Please keep them and the
operating instructions in a safe place. If you ever dispose of the model be sure to
pass them on to the new owner.
Powered model aircraft are very demanding and potentially dangerous machines,
and call for a high level of technical knowledge and skill from the operator, together
with a responsible attitude.
--
Powered model aircraft are not suitable for young persons under 18 years of age.
--
Young people should only be permitted to operate this model under the instruction
and supervision of an adult who is aware of the hazards involved in this activity.
The operator of the model must be in full possession of his or her bodily and mental
faculties. As with car driving, operating a model aircraft under the influence of
alcohol or drugs is not permissible under any circumstances.
Radio-controlled model aircraft may only be employed for the purpose intended by
the manufacturer. They must never be used as man-carrying machines. We do not
permit this model’s use in any way except as a model aircraft.
A radio-controlled model aircraft can only work properly and fulfil your expectations
if it is built very carefully and in accordance with the building instructions. Do not
make any modifications of any kind to the design features or materials. If you wish
to avoid injuring people and damaging property it is essential to be careful and
painstaking at all stages of building and operating your model. Nobody would climb
into a full-size light aircraft and try to fly it without completing a course of training
first. Model flying is a skill which has to be learned in just the same way. We
suggest that you ask for help from an experienced model flyer, or join a model club
or flight training school. Your local model shop and the specialist magazines are
excellent sources of information.
It is fundamentally essential to set the Centre of Gravity (CG) and control surface
travels correctly. Adjust the model until they are exactly as stated.
Don’t ignore our warnings. They refer to materials and situations which, if ignored,
can result in fatal injury or permanent damage.
--
You alone are responsible for the safe operation of your radio-controlled model and
motor.
If you have any questions regarding the safe operation of your RC model aircraft,
please turn to your local model shop in the first instance as the staff will be pleased
to help you.
• Propellers and other rotating parts which are powered by a motor represent a
permanent hazard and present a real risk of injury. Don’t touch them with any
part of your body. For example, a propeller spinning at high speed can easily
slice off a finger.
• Keep well clear of the rotational plane of the propeller. You never know when
some part may come loose and fly off at high speed, hitting you or anybody else
in the vicinity. Never touch the revolving propeller with any object.
• Take care with loose clothing such as scarves, loose shirts etc. Flapping cloth
can easily be sucked into the area of the propeller and then get tangled in the
blades. This is extremely dangerous.
• If there are passers-by or spectators at your flying site, make sure that they are
aware of the dangers inherent in your activity, and insist that they keep a safe
distance away (at least 5 m).
• Model fuels are toxic; do not allow them to come into contact with your eyes or
mouth. Fuel should always be stored in clearly marked containers, out of the
reach of children.
• Model fuels are volatile and highly inflammable. Keep them well away from open
flames, excessive heat, all possible sources of sparks and anything else which
could result in a fire. Do not smoke in the immediate vicinity of fuel or fuel
vapours.
• Model engines generate a lot of heat. The motor and silencer in particular
become very hot when running, and stay at a high temperature for quite a while.
Touching the hot parts can give you serious burns, so take care especially when
carrying out adjustments - wear protective gloves. Hot engines can even start a
fire under certain circumstances.
• When the motor is running it expels hot toxic gases from the exhaust together
with very hot fluid combustion residues which can burn you if you are not
careful.
• Remove all unused fuel from the fueltank and motor after every session.
• Every time you intend to operate your model check carefully that it and
everything attached to it (e.g. propeller, linkages, control surfaces etc.) is in
good condition and undamaged. If you find a fault, do not fly the model until you
have corrected it.
• Model engines are usually started with the help of an electric starter which
should be fitted with the appropriate adaptor where necessary. With fixed-wing
models an alternative is to use a “chicken stick” - a length of thick wooden
dowel with a piece of water hose pushed over it.
• Many model motors are very noisy, producing a sound level much higher than
85 dB (A), which implies that you should wear ear defenders. Never run a motor
without the silencer fitted. Even with a silencer, model engines can easily
disturb your neighbours. Don’t run engines when other people expect peace and
quiet.
• If you start your motor when the model is standing on loose or sandy ground,
the propeller will suck up sand and dust and hurl it around, and it could easily
get in your eyes and do damage. Wear protective goggles at such times.
• Take care that the glowplug clip and the glow lead cannot get tangled in the
propeller or other rotating parts. Check the throttle linkage too.
• Take particular care when carrying the model with the motor running. Hold the
rotating parts well away from you!
• Be sure to keep an adequate supply of fuel in the tank. Don’t continue to fly the
model until the tank is drained dry.
• Keep a safe distance from residential areas: at least 1.5 km “as the crow flies”.
The best solution is to join a model flying club and use the approved flying site.
Always keep well clear of high-tension overhead cables.
• Whenever you are working on the motor, make sure that you are on a safe
surface and cannot slip. Get used to holding the model really securely.
• Take-off and landing strips should be kept free of unauthorised people and
movable obstacles, particularly when a model is using the strip.
• Watch the aeroplane constantly while it is in the air. Models must always give
way to full-size aircraft.
• Don’t operate your aircraft from public roads, squares, school playgrounds,
public parks or sports grounds etc., and ensure that you are always in full
control of the model.
• It is important that you can stop your engine at any time. This is achieved by
adjusting the throttle so that the barrel closes completely when you move the
throttle stick and trim to their end-points. If this does not work, pinch the fuel
feed line between your fingers or pull it off the carburettor. Never try to stop the
motor by grasping the flywheel, propeller or spinner!
• All model flyers should behave in a manner which minimises the danger to
people and property. Never act in any way which will disturb other flyers and
jeopardise safe, orderly flying at the site.
In legal terms our models are classed as aircraft, and as such are subject to legal
regulations and restrictions which must be observed.
Our brochure “Luftrecht für Modellflieger” (Aviation Law for Model Flyers) is
available under Order No. 8032, and contains a summary of all these rules. Your
local model shop will have a copy which you can read. Models fitted with glowplug
motors may only be flown with the landowner’s permission, and third party
insurance is mandatory. There are also Post Office regulations concerning your
radio control system, and these must be observed at all times.
Please don’t misunderstand the purpose of these notes. We only want to make you
aware of the many dangers and hazards which can arise if you lack knowledge and
experience, or work carelessly or irresponsibly. If you take reasonable care, model
flying is a highly creative, instructive, enjoyable and relaxing pastime.
This model is highly pre-fabricated and can be built in a very short time. However,
the work which you have to carry out is important and must be done carefully. The
model will only be strong and fly well if you complete your tasks competently - so
please work slowly and accurately.
This model is built and flown at the sole and express responsibility of the operator.
The only way to avoid injury to persons and damage to property is to handle and
operate the model with the greatest care and consideration at all times.
Before you operate the model for the first time, please check that your private third-party
liability insurance policy covers you for the operation of models of this type. If you are not
sure, take out a special policy designed to cover modelling risks.
These safety notes must be kept in a safe place. If you ever dispose of the model, be sure
to pass them on to the new owner.
Guarantee conditions
The guarantee covers replacement of any parts which can be shown to exhibit
manufacturing faults or material defects within the guarantee period of 24 months from the
initial date of purchase. No other claims will be considered. Cost of transport, packing and
freight are payable by the purchaser. We accept no liability for damage in transit. When
you send the product to GRAUPNER, or to the approved Service Centre for your country,
you must include a clear and concise description of the fault together with the invoice
showing the date of purchase. The guarantee is invalid if the component or model fails due
to an accident, incompetent handling or incorrect usage.
The following points are important and must be observed at all times:
• Before you fly the model, check that the radio control system is working reliably, and
that all connections are secure.
• If you use dry cells as an energy source, please note that you must never attempt to
recharge them. Only batteries marked specifically as “rechargeable” may be recharged
safely.
• It is important to charge the batteries and check the effective range of the radio control
system before you operate the model. In particular, the radio control system batteries
must be fully charged before each session and checked before each flight.
• Ensure that the channel you intend to use is not already in use by other modellers.
Never fly the model if you are not certain that your channel is free.
• Read and observe the instructions and recommendations provided by the manufacturer
of your radio control system and accessory components.
• Ensure that the servos are not mechanically obstructed at any point in their travel.
• Dry cells and rechargeable batteries must never be short-circuited.
Pre-flight checks
Check that the radio control system is working correctly and at full range before every
flight: fit the transmitter aerial and extend it fully, then switch on the transmitter and the
receiving system. Walk away from the model, and check that all the control surfaces work
smoothly and immediately at an appropriate distance, and deflect in the correct “sense”
(direction) relative to the stick movements.
Repeat the check with the engine running while a friend holds the model securely for you.
If you are a relative beginner to model flying, we recommend that you enlist the aid of an
experienced model pilot to help you check and test-fly the model.
• Before making any glued joints, be sure to clean the surfaces and remove all traces of
grease. We recommend sanding lightly, or wiping with a non-greasy cleaning agent.
The same applies to surfaces to be painted, otherwise the paint is unlikely to adhere
well. Before gluing parts to the fuselage it is essential to roughen the surfaces with fine
abrasive paper and de-grease them with acetone or similar solvent, otherwise you will
not obtain strong, durable joints. This applies in particular to moulded GRP fuselages.
You will need to extend the connecting leads of the two aileron servos using extension
leads, Order No. 3935.32; extension leads, Order No. 3935.18, are required for the two
landing flap servos.
For connecting the aileron and flap servos to the receiver you require four suppressor
filters, Order No. 1040, or a folding ferrite ring, Order No. 98516.1, together with four
extension leads, Order No. 3935.18.
You will also need foam padding for the receiver and receiver battery, e.g. Order No. 1637.
Adhesives
Fast-setting epoxy resin, e.g. UHU plus schnellfest, Order No. 962
Slow-setting epoxy resin, e.g. UHU plus endfest, Order No. 950
GRAUPNER EPOLYTH resin 100, Order No. 934
GRAUPNER EPOLYTH hardener 60, Order No. 935
Cyano-acrylate glue (“cyano”), e.g. Order No. 5821
Thread-lock fluid, e.g. Order No. 952, for securing screwed joints
The wing
Glue three hinges in each aileron using cyano, leaving exactly half of each hinge
projecting. Allow the glue to set hard, then glue the projecting hinges into the wing. Repeat
with the second wing panel.
When the adhesive has cured, the two outboard wing panels can be glued to the wing
centre section. Start by gluing the hardwood wing joiners into the sockets in the centre
section, with half their length protruding. Allow the epoxy to set hard, then glue the
outboard panels to the centre section.
The wing servo mounts can be prepared while the epoxy is curing. Locate the slots in the
servo plates (hatch covers) and melt the film over them using a hot soldering iron.
Each servo plate has to be fitted with two hardwood blocks, to which the servos are
screwed.
Note that the mounting blocks must be positioned in such a way that the servo output arm
is exactly central in the slot. Allow the glue to set hard, then drill pilot-holes in the
hardwood blocks and screw the servos in place. Don’t forget the rubber grommets and
metal spacers, and use the servos themselves as drilling templates.
The openings in the wings for the servos can now be opened up, again using a hot
soldering iron.
You may find it necessary to file or cut away part of the servo plate mounting flange (the
area in the photo shown hatched-in) to clear the bottom of the servo.
Connect the appropriate extension lead to each servo.
Fit a heat-shrink sleeve round the connectors (or use glue) to prevent them shaking loose.
The servos can now be installed and the servo plates screwed to the wing. Remember to
drill suitable pilot-holes for the retaining screws.
The two aileron pushrods can now be made up; each consists of two clevises, two nuts
and one M2.5 threaded rod.
Screw a locknut and a clevis on the threaded pushrod, and connect the clevis to the servo
output arm.
Mark the point where the pushrod crosses the aileron. Place the aileron horn at this point,
position it in line with the pushrod, and mark the fixing screw holes.
Drill the holes and fix the horn to the aileron using the retaining screws and the spreader
plate supplied.
Snip off excess screw length using side-cutters, and file the cut end flush with the spreader
plate.
Connect the second clevis to the horn and mark the length of the threaded rod. Cut the rod
to length and screw the locknut and clevis on the cut end. Screw the clevis in or out until
the aileron is exactly at neutral (centre) when the servo is at centre. Repeat the whole
procedure with the second aileron.
The three flaps are inter-linked using a piece of flexible steel cable, length approximately
305 mm, which runs through the central flap and projects by an equal amount on both
sides.
Temporarily tape the landing flaps to the wing.
Place the hinges in position and mark the location of the screw-holes on the flaps and the
wing.
Fix the hinges to the wing and the flaps using pan-head self-tapping screws. Squirt a drop
of white glue in the holes before fitting the screws; the glue will prevent them shaking
loose. Attach the flap horns as described for the ailerons.
Before you screw the flap servos in place, remove the output arms and re-position them on
the output shafts offset to the rear by one spline.
Install the flap servos in the wing as described for the ailerons.
We recommend the use of a two-position switch on the transmitter for operating the flaps.
It is then possible to program a take-off position and a landing position using a mixer at the
transmitter.
The last major task on the wing is to install the retractable undercarriage units and the
plastic wheel wells.
Install the air lines for the retracts as described in the instructions supplied with the
undercarriage set.
The wing is held on the fuselage using two hardwood locating dowels at the front and two
screws at the rear.
The leading edge dowels must line up accurately with the holes in the fuselage former,
and the wing must be positioned correctly when the dowels are engaged in the holes, i.e.
the wing airfoil should fit accurately in the wing saddle cut-out.
Drill the two rear 5 mm Ø holes for the wing retaining screws in the positions indicated,
drilling through the wing and the wing saddle at the same time. Open up the holes in the
wing saddle to suit the shank of the captive nuts, so that they can be glued in the holes.
The final work on the wing is to cut out the dummy oil coolers and glue them to the root
leading edge as shown.
The fuselage
Slide the tailplane through the fuselage and set it exactly central, i.e. it must project by the
same length on both sides of the fuselage.
In this position mark the outline of the fuselage on the tailplane. Withdraw the tailplane
again and melt the film by running a hot soldering iron over it just inside the marked lines.
Peel the unwanted film from the centre of the tailplane.
Sand the fuselage at the joint surfaces, and glue the tailplane in place. Check that the
tailplane is central and exactly “square” before leaving the glue to dry.
Drill a 2 mm Ø hole for the tailwheel unit in the top and bottom of the fuselage at the
appropriate point.
Fit the tailwheel bracket on the tailwheel wire, and slip the wire through the two holes from
the underside, as shown in the photo. Screw the tailwheel bracket to the fuselage as
shown.
Bend the tailwheel wire at right-angles at a point about 30 mm above the top of the
fuselage; note that the bend must be at right-angles to the tailwheel axle.
The hinges can now be glued in the rudder using cyano, as described earlier.
Allow the glue to set hard, then glue the hinges in the fin, fitting the tailwheel wire into a
hole in the rudder at the same time.
If you have worked carefully as described above, the rudder will line up exactly with the
bottom rudder fairing while the tailwheel is in the “straight ahead” position.
Attach the horns to the tail control surfaces as described for the ailerons and landing flaps.
The rudder is actuated using a single DSS pushrod, while each elevator is actuated using
its own DSS linkage. DSS = an aluminium tube enclosing a plastic sleeve, in which a steel
rod slides.
The servos should now be installed, so that the pushrods can be glued in place.
Start by pressing the rubber grommets and metal spacers into the servo mounting lugs.
Fix the servos in the servo plate using the screws supplied with them.
The DSS linkages should be installed in such a way that they run in a perfectly straight line
from the linkage point on the servo output arm to the linkage point of the control surface
horn.
You will need to file slots at the appropriate point in the fuselage sides for the tail linkages.
The two elevator pushrods are linked together just short of the servo using a Duo pushrod
connector, as shown in the photo.
Screw an M2 locknut and a clevis on the rudder pushrod, and solder an M2.5 clevis to the
other end.
The next stage is to install the motor. The mounting hole positions on the nose bulkhead
have to be marked to suit the motor / motor mount combination you intend to use. For
maximum vibration de-coupling the motor mount is installed on rubber vibration absorbers,
and this method is described in the instructions. Place the motor on the mount and position
it so that the distance from the rear face of the motor mount to the front face of the
propeller driver is 150 mm. Place the motor mount on the nose bulkhead, with the motor
centreline lined up with the intersection of the two lines you marked earlier. Mark the
position of the motor mount screw-holes on the nose bulkhead. Remove the motor and drill
holes at the marked points, opening them up in stages to 10 mm Ø to accept the vibration
absorbers. Fit the absorbers in the holes, and check that the flanges rest flat on the
bulkhead. The motor mount can now be screwed to the bulkhead; tighten the screws just
Drill a hole for the throttle linkage at the appropriate point in the nose bulkhead, and install
the linkage. Set up the pushrod so that the carburettor is half-open when the servo is at
centre (neutral).
Attach the silencer to the motor, angled to exit at the underside of the fuselage.
If you wish, you can improve the appearance of the model’s front end by fitting the dummy
radial engine. Cut out the dummy engine, paint it, and glue it in the front of the cowl as
shown.
The cowl can be offered up for final fitting once the motor and silencer have been installed
permanently.
Cut and file out the openings required in the cowl to clear the cylinder head, the silencer,
the needle valves etc.
An annular (ring-shaped) former has to be glued inside the cowl in order to attach the cowl
to the nose bulkhead. Note that the motor’s propeller driver requires about 10 mm
clearance to the front edge of the cowl. You may need to cut away the annular former and
the dummy radial engine to clear the engine you are using.
It is important that the fuel pick-up (clunk) is free to move inside the tank; it must not foul
the tank at any point, even when it is held vertically.
The overflow pipe should extend right to the top of the fueltank, while the filler tube should
reach right to the bottom. Fit short pieces of silicone fuel tubing on the rigid tubes to
achieve this.
Fit the prepared fueltank in the fuselage, push the tank stopper into the hole in the nose
bulkhead, and fit the rear end in the cut-out in the former. Pack foam round the fueltank in
this position to prevent it shifting in flight.
The canopy is fixed to the fuselage using four pan-head self-tapping screws. Fitting a
dummy pilot in the cockpit improves the model’s appearance no end; a suitable version is
available under Order No. 916.2.
Apply the decals and fit the propeller on the motor to complete the model.
We recommend that you set 35% exponential on all control surfaces at the transmitter.
The stated travels are measured at the widest point of the control surfaces.
Important
When fitting and adjusting the various linkages you should ensure that they move freely,
without binding, are able to move to their full extent - including trim travel - and are not
obstructed mechanically at any point.
When you move the rudder stick to the right, the rudder should also deflect to the right (left
stick: left rudder). Pull the elevator stick back towards you, and both elevators must deflect
up (stick forward: elevators down).
If you move the aileron stick to the right, the right aileron should rise, the left aileron fall.
The landing flaps should deflect down when you move the corresponding slider or switch
back (towards you).
When you move the throttle stick forward, the motor should run to the full-throttle position,
i.e. the carburettor barrel should be fully open. Move the throttle stick and throttle trim right
back, and the motor should stop reliably.
We wish you every success and many enjoyable flights with your F4-U CORSAIR.

Selon les servos utilisés, l’encadrement devra être un peu évidé pour le passage du fond du boîtier ;
