gases, siehe Abbildung oben.

WARNUNG
Verdichter steht unter Druck!
Schwere Verletzungen möglich.
Verdichter auf drucklosen Zustand bringen!
Schutzbrille tragen!
VORSICHT

on zugelassen ist.

7.1.3 Umwelt-Aspekte
teilweise schon gesetzliche Verordnungen eingeleitet.

Resultierende Auslegungskriterien

In diesem Zusammen-

Umfang in realen Anlagen eingesetzt. Die bisher vorliegenden Ergebnisse sind sehr zufriedenstellend.
®
well) geführt.
Zur gleichen Kategorie gehören auch die Kältemittel-Gemische R516A (ARKEMA ARM 42) sowie R456A (Koura/
Mexichem AC5X).

raturen (siehe Abbildung 53, Seite 97).

Boos-
CO2 in Kfz-Klimaanlagen
lagen geforderten langen Lebensdauer.
„Pitchpoint‟

Retrofit to refrigerants with low ozone depletion potential (ODP) and low global warming potential
(GWP*)? Why?
Stratospheric ozone depletion and atmospheric greenhouse effect due to refrigerant emissions have led to drastic
changes in the refrigeration and air conditioning technology since the beginning of the 1990s. The use of fluorin-
ated chlorohydrocarbons (CFC und HCFC) and fluorinated hydrocarbons (FC und HFC) have been regulated.
Meanwhile, legal specifications have been enacted which prohibit the use of (H)CFCs and gradually phase-out
HFCs.
• With the see chapter Montreal Protocol, page 189 in 1987, fluorinated chlorohydrocarbons (CFCs), which con-
tribute to the stratospheric ozone depletion, were prohibited. Later on, HCFCs were prohibited – with a gradually
phase-down for Article 5 countries until 2040.
• The see chapter EU F-Gas Regulation, page 190 of 2014 goes one step further and gradually reduces the hy-
drofluorocarbons (HFCs), which function as replacements for the HCFCs, until 2030 in the EU. Therefore, refri-
gerants with high global warming potential (GWP) will become increasingly scarce in the future. However, most
alternative refrigerants with low global warming potential are flammable ‒ of these, A2L refrigerants are less
flammable than A3 refrigerants.
• Moreover, with the amendments of the see chapter Kigali Conference, page 191 to the Montreal Protocol in
2016, the HFC phase-down was specified at international level.
*GWP = Global Warming Potential is a substance-specific quality: Contribution to gobal warming per kg emitted substance of CO2 equivalent.
Note:
This description covers the conversion of existing systems from refrigerants R404A/R507A and R22 to alternatives
(substitutes). With regard to applicable safety requirements, these systems can only be converted to non-flam-
mable refrigerants (safety group A1). Therefore, the explanations, recommendations and additional refrigerant
tables and data relate only to refrigerant alternatives of safety class A1, which are commercially available now or in
the near future.

Fig. 7: Refrigerant circuit in a p,h diagram (R134a, with internal heat exchanger)
Using an internal heat exchanger, liquid subcooling is reached by heating up the suction gas, see figure above.
Most refrigerants improve in efficiency with internal heat exchange, especially R134a, R404A and R507A.
However, in systems with Economiser or with 2-stage compressors with refrigerant subcooler this only applies to
short circuits, provided that the liquid side of the heat exchanger is installed between condenser and subcooler. In
case of longer pipe layouts and usual placement of the heat exchanger directly at the evaporator, the efficiency is
significantly reduced due to the strongly subcooled refrigerant. This is especially true for low temperature systems
in which the condenser is designed for a low temperature difference.
Vapour pressure
An important point when retrofitting is comparing pressures in the system. The see figure 8, page 195 shows the
vapour pressure curves of several refrigerants according to their dew point.
The refrigerants R404A and R507A are differing only very little. Placed slightly below are R448A and R449A. Signi-
ficantly below are the refrigerants R513A, R1234yf, R134a and R450A. The named refrigerants can all be used
without problems with the maximum allowable pressure of the system. The slightly lower pressure values of R448A
and R449A indicate a slightly lower refrigerating capacity, at least when referring to the dew point. The lower pres-
sure values of R513A, R1234yf, R134a and R450A make them feasible for applications from -20°C evaporation
and up.

Refrigerating capacity
When comparing refrigerating capacity values for the same displacement, the consideration of the system design is
important. The see figure 9, page 196 shows a comparison for a simple circuit based on refrigerant properties only.
Conditions chosen are 40°C condensing temperature, 10 K superheat, no sub-cooling, variable evaporating tem-
perature.
The refrigerating capacity of R507A is approximately 2 to 3% above that of R404A, see bold dash dot line. With ref-
erence to the dew point for evaporating and condensing temperature, the refrigerating capacity of R448A and
R449A is 2 to 4% below that of R404A, see bold dash line and bold dotted line. If the temperature glide can be util-
ized, the mid point temperature can be used as reference for evaporating and condensing temperature. In this
case, the refrigerating capacity of R448A and R449A in such a system is 1 to 2% above that of R404A, see the
lines with diamonds.
The comparisons of compressor performance data can differ slightly from these curves. Due to the lower suction
pressure the capacity data for R448A and R449A can be 2 to 5% lower than theory for low temperature application,
depending on the compressor design.
For systems with high useful superheat, e.g. 20°C suction gas temperature due to large internal heat exchangers,
the differences increase a little. R404A and R507A gain more from useful superheat, than R448A and R449A do. In
this case, the refrigerating capacity of R448A and R449A at low temperature application and reference to dew point
can be up to 10% below R404A. Referring to mid point for evaporating and condensing temperature, the refrigerat-
ing capacity might be only approximately 5% below that of R404A.
For low temperature systems utilizing economizer operation for subcooling, the ratio of the refrigerating capacities
is similar to the systems with internal heat exchanger. The refrigerating capacity with R448A and R449A would be
approximately 10% below that of R404A, depending on the evaporating temperature. The refrigerating capacity of
the refrigerants R134a, R513A and R1234yf for medium temperature application is approximately 60% of the capa-
city of R404A.
The capacity of R450A is slightly above 50% of that of R404A. These refrigerants might be feasible, if the refrigera-
tion system delivers significantly more capacity than the current demand. As the flow speed in the liquid line and
the vapour density in suction and discharge lines (influence on pressure loss) are lower and condenser and evap-

Material compatibility
The refrigerants R448A and R449A contain amounts of the refrigerants R1234yf, R448A and R1234ze(E). These
refrigerants have different compatibility behaviour in relation to plastic gasket materials than the components of the
up to now common refrigerant blends, like R404A or R407F. Thus it is necessary to gather compatibility and applic-
ability statements from the manufacturers of the system components. In case of compatibility problems, compon-
ents might become leaky, to the outside or in case of solenoid valves also internally. Swelling gaskets might block
control valves. Softening of valve seats can lead to wear at the seals and to malfunction after some time.
For many components, a problem free operation with the new refrigerants is possible (Compatibility of BITZER
products).
Flow velocity
When retrofitting an existing system with an other refrigerant, the displacement stays almost the same. Thus also
the flow velocities inside the suction lines stay almost the same. Due to the slightly lower suction pressure, the suc-
tion gas density is slightly lower. The impact on the oil transport should be small. The mass velocity of R448A and
R449A is only 65% to 70%, compared to R404A at same displacement. As the liquid density is approximately 5%
higher, the flow velocity in the liquid line drops to approximately 65%, which is maybe even advantageous here.
When using R450A the flow velocity in the liquid line will be approximately 35%, for R513A approximately 45% and
for R1234yf approximately 50%.

WARNING
The compressor is under pressure!
Serious injuries are possible.
Depressurize the compressor!
Wear safety goggles!
CAUTION
Surface temperatures of more than 60°C or below 0°C.
Risk of burns or frostbite.
Close off accessible areas and mark them.
Before performing any work on the compressor: switch it off and let it cool down or warm up.
WARNING
Avoid air penetration in the system!
All refrigerant blends contain at least one flammable component. A critical shift of the ignition point can oc-
cur under high pressure and evacuating when a high proportion of air is present.
WARNING
Always charge the system with liquid refrigerant!
When vapour is taken from the charging cylinder shifts in concentrations may occur.
NOTICE
! The use of refrigerant blends with a significant temperature glide is not recommended for plants with
flooded evaporators.
A large concentration shift is to be expected in this type of evaporator, and as a result also in the circulating
refrigerant mass flow.

Reciprocating compressors
Since introduction of the BITZER ECOLINE in 2013, the elastomer gaskets of the reciprocating compressors of
BITZER are suitable as stated above.
The gaskets used in the reciprocating compressors before are considered a low risk only.
Elastomer gaskets are used at the oil pump, the oil sight glass and on open type compressors also in the shaft
seal.
On semi hermetic compressors without oil pump, elastomer gaskets are used only at the oil sight glass.
On compressors manufactured before 2010, a change of the gaskets is recommended. If the gasket surface is
opened during maintenance, an exchange is recommended, too.
On open type compressors, a preventive change of the shaft seal is recommended to reduce the risk of loss of new
refrigerant.
Screw compressors
BITZER screw compressors contain more elastomer gaskets. The currently used gaskets are suitable as stated
above.
On compressors manufactured before 2010, a change of the gaskets is recommended. If the gasket surface is
opened during maintenance, an exchange is recommended, too.
On open type compressors, a preventive change of the shaft seal is recommended to reduce the risk of loss of new
refrigerant.

! The use of refrigerant blends with a significant temperature glide is not recommended for plants with
flooded evaporators.
A large concentration shift is to be expected in this type of evaporator, and as a result also in the circulating
refrigerant mass flow.

miscibility/solubility is not guaranteed when MO (mineral oil) and/or AB (alkylbenzene) lubricants are used!

Application
Many new refrigerant mixtures, targeting replacement of R404A or R22, do have a significant temperature glide of
4 to 7 K or even more, during evaporation and condensation. Depending on the system and heat exchanger
design, this can lead to different evaporating and condensation temperatures than with e.g. R404A. Thus the oper-
ating conditions of the compressor can change, resulting in need for additional cooling earlier than would expected
by the comparison of theoretical data.
Flammability classification
If the refrigerant material or mixture to be used is listed as flammable – A3, A2 or A2L according to ASHRAE 34,
ISO817 resp. EN378-1 – the system installation is to be made safe for the use of flammable refrigerants according
to local regulations. For the compressors BITZER strongly recommends to place the motor protection device in the
switch cabinet, not in the terminal box, if not otherwise documented.
In the EU a risk assessment according to the ATEX directive might be necessary. The preferred method to comply
with regulations is to avoid a flammable concentration by appropriate measures. When planning use of a flam-
mable refrigerant not allowed in the technical documentation, please contact BITZER.

Eco-Efficiency
An assessment based on the specific TEWI value takes into account the effects of global warming during the oper-
ating period of a refrigeration, air conditioning or heat pump installation. However, not the entire ecological and
economic aspects are considered.
Nevertheless, economic aspects are similarly significant as ecological ones when evaluating technologies and
making investment decisions. With technical systems, the reduction of environmental impact frequently involves
high costs, whereas low costs often have increased ecological consequences. For most companies, the investment
costs are decisive, whereas they are often neglected during discussions about minimizing ecological problems.
For the purpose of a more objective assessment, studies* were presented in 2005 and 2010, using the example of
supermarket refrigeration plants to describe a concept for evaluating Eco-Efficiency. It is based on the relationship
between added value (a product's economic value) and the resulting environmental impact.
With this evaluation approach, the entire life cycle of a system is taken into account in terms of:
• ecological performance in accordance with the concept of Life Cycle Assessment as per ISO 14040,
• economic performance by means of a Life Cycle Cost Analysis.
This means that the overall environmental impact (including direct and indirect emissions), as well as the invest-
ment costs, operating and disposal costs, and capital costs are taken into account.

Alternatives to R134a
For mobile air conditioning systems (MAC) with open drive compressors and hose connections in the refrigerant
circuit, the risk of leakages is considerably higher than with stationary systems. An EU Directive (2006/40/EC) has
been passed to reduce direct emissions in this application area. Within the scope of the Directive, and starting
2011, type approvals for new vehicles will only be granted if they use refrigerants with a global warming potential
(GWP) of less than 150. Consequently, this excludes R134a (GWP = 1430) which has been used so far in these
systems.
Meanwhile, alternative refrigerants and new technologies were developed and tested. This also involved a closer
examination of the use of R152a.

7.2.5 Substitutes for R22 in air conditioning systems and heat pumps
As the HCFC refrigerant R22 (ODP = 0.05) is accepted only as a transitional solution, a number of chlorine-free
(ODP = 0) alternatives have been developed and tested extensively. They are being used for a large range of ap-
plications.
Experience shows, however, that none of these substitutes can replace the refrigerant R22 in all respects.
Amongst others there are differences in the volumetric refrigerating capacity, restrictions in possible applications,
special requirements in system design and considerably differing pressure levels. According to the specific operat-
ing conditions, various alternatives may be considered.
Apart from the single-component HFC refrigerant R134a, these are mainly blends (different compositions) of the
components R32, R125, R134a, R143a, and R600(a). The following description mainly concerns the development
and potential applications of these. The halogen-free substitutes NH3, propane and propylene as well as CO2

R134a alternatives
In addition to the flammable HFO refrigerants R1234yf and R1234ze(E) already described, non-flammable mixtures
are now also available as R134a alternatives. As previously mentioned, the initial situation is most favorable for
these.
They achieve GWP values of approx. 600 − less than half of 134a (GWP = 1430). In addition, this type of blends
can have azeotropic properties, so they can be used like pure refrigerants.
For quite some time a blend has been applied on a larger scale in real systems – this was developed by Chemours
TM
and is called Opteon XP-10. Results available today are highly satisfactory.
®
This is also true for an R134a alternative designated Solstice N-13 and offered by Honeywell which, however, dif-
fers regarding the blend composition.
The refrigerants are listed in the ASHRAE nomenclature under R513A (Chemours) and R450A (Honeywell).
The same category also includes the refrigerant blends R516A (ARKEMA ARM 42) and R456A (Koura/Mexichem
AC5X).
All options show refrigerating capacity, power input, and pressure levels similar to R134a. Thus, components and
system technology can be taken over, only minor changes like superheat adjustment of the expansion valves are
necessary.

As described before, under purely thermodynamic aspects, the transcritical operating mode appears to be unfa-
vourable in terms of energy efficiency. In fact, this is true for systems with a fairly high temperature level of the heat
sink on the high pressure side. However, additional measures can improve efficiency, such as the use of parallel
compression (economiser system) and/or ejectors or expanders for recovering the throttling losses during expan-
sion of the refrigerant.
Apart from that, there are application areas in which a transcritical process is advantageous in energy demand.
These include heat pumps for heating of sanitary water or drying processes. With the usually very high temperature
gradients between the discharge temperature at the gas cooler intake and the heat sink intake temperature, a very
low gas temperature outlet is achievable. This is facilitated by the temperature glide curve and the relatively high
mean temperature difference between CO2 vapour and secondary fluid. The low gas outlet temperature leads to a
particularly high enthalpy difference, and therefore to a high system COP.
Low-capacity sanitary water heat pumps are already manufactured and used in large quantities. Plants for medium
to higher capacities (e.g. hotels, swimming pools, drying systems) must be planned and realised individually. Their
number is therefore still limited, but with a good upward trend. Apart from these specific applications, there is also a
range of developments for the classical areas of refrigeration and air-conditioning, e.g. supermarket refrigeration.
Installations with parallel compounded compressors are in operation to a larger scale. They are predominantly
booster systems where medium and low temperature circuits are connected (without heat exchanger). The operat-
ing experience and the calculated energy costs show promising results. However, the investment costs are still
higher than for conventional plants with HFCs and direct expansion.
On the one hand, the favourable energy costs are due to the high degree of optimized components and the system
control, as well as the previously described advantages regarding heat transfer and pressure drop. On the other
hand, these installations are preferably used in climate zones permitting very high running times in subcritical oper-
ation due to the annual ambient temperature profile.

A detailed evaluation is not yet possible with respect to the chemical stability of the refrigerants and lubricants at
the very high operating temperatures and the long service life required for industrial systems.
Special applications also include cogeneration systems – "Organic Rankine Cycle" (ORC), which become in-
creasingly important. In addition to the potentially suitable substances listed in the table above, a series of other flu-
ids are possible, depending on the temperature level of the heat source and heat sink.
They include the so far mostly used R245fa (GWP 1050) with a critical temperature of 154°C and a boiling temper-
ature of 15.1°C.

the trade name Solkatherm SES36 already presented several years ago contains perfluoropolyether as a blend
component. It is an azeotropic blend with a critical temperature of 178°C. Meanwhile two zeotropic blends contain-
ing R365mfc and R227ea have been developed whose critical temperatures are 177°C and 182°C, due to different
®
mixing ratios. They are available under the trade names Solkatherm SES24 and SES30.
In ORC systems, zeotropic behavior may be advantageous. In the case of single-phase heat sources and heat
sinks, the temperature difference at the so-called "pitch point" can be raised by the gliding evaporation and con-
densation. This leads to improved heat transmission due to the higher driving average temperature difference.
