2. In some cases, both the merged and the separately written form can be used. The choice of one over
the other depends on stylistic reasons.
Examples
Er steigt ins Auto ein. Er steigt in das Auto ein.
Geh zum Personalleiter! Geh zu dem Personalleiter!
Er lebt im reichsten Land. Er lebt in dem reichsten Land.
Note 1
First-person personal pronouns indicate the speaker, second-person pronouns indicate the person being
addressed and third-person pronouns a person other than the speaker and the person being addressed.
First-person and second-person personal pronouns refer to people but third-person personal pronouns
may or may not refer to people (but also to animals, abstract ideas etc.).
Example
einen neuen
Mein Vater hat gekauft. nouns
Wagen
gestern third-person
Er hat ihn
gekauft. personal pronoun
person not a person
When using a third-person personal pronoun, it is possible that a noun, which has already been
mentioned, is omitted.
Note 2
In the German language, the formal/polite and the informal/familiar types can be used in the second
person. The formal/polite type is always written with a capital first letter and is usually used when
addressing an adult. It expresses politeness, respect or lack of intimacy/familiarity.
Examples
Peter, was hälst du davon, dass wir eine Band informal/familiar type of
gründen? address
formal/polite type of
Herr Meier, möchten Sie einen Kaffee trinken?
address
In the following table the informal/familiar types and the formal/polite types are presented, in the singular
and the plural number. One can easily conclude that the formal/polite types are identical both in the
singular and the plural, which means that they remain unchanged, independent of the number of people
that are being addressed (one or more).

The pronoun es has a range of functions wider than those of a personal pronoun. For this reason, it will
be introduced separately.
The pronoun es
HA2
The pronoun es can function as :
1
pronoun
.
2
Korrelat
.
3
pseudo-subject (to give emphasis to the real subject)
.
4
impersonal subject/object
.
Pronoun
The pronoun es can substitute a noun in the nominative or in accusative case.
Examples
Wie viele Seiten hat das Buch? Es hat über 600 Seiten.
Wann holst du das Kind ab? Ich hole es nach der Arbeit ab.
Es can also substitute a noun or adjective that functions as a predicative expression.
Examples
Er ist Regisseur. Ich möchte es auch werden.
Sie ist enttäuscht. Ich bin es auch.
Es can also stand in the place of an entire clause.
Examples
Sie haben vor, ein neues Haus zu kaufen. Wir haben es auch vor.
Mein Vater behauptet, dass sie zu alt ist. Deine Mutter hat es auch behauptet.
Notes
1. The pronoun es, when functioning as an accusative object or a predicative expression, can never be in
the first position of a clause.
2. The pronoun es cannot be combined with a preposition. In this case, pronominal adverbs are used. If
there is no equivalent pronominal adverb or if someone wants to refer to animals or people, the noun
must be repeated.
Examples
Die Bewohner kümmern sich
Sie kümmern sich um es. Sie kümmern sich darum.
um das Haus.
preposition + es = FALSE pronominal adverb = RIGHT
Er kann ohne sein Handy nicht
Er hat sein Handy immer dabei. Er kann ohne es nicht leben.
leben.
preposition + es = FALSE repetition = RIGHT
Korrelat
The pronoun es can function as Korrelat for an entire subordinate or infinitive clause that is either the
subject or the object of the main clause.
As a subject, it functions as follows.
subordinate clause =
main clause
subject
Dass man die Prüfung
ist schwierig.
besteht,
"es" in the first position main clause subordinate clause = subject
dass man die Prüfung
Es ist schwierig,
besteht.
infinitive clause = subject main clause
Die Prüfung zu bestehen, ist schwierig
"es" in the first position main clause subordinate clause = subject
Es ist schwierig, die Prüfung zu bestehen.
When a subordinate clause is subject to the main clause and follows it, es can be in the first position. If
another word is in the first position, the use of es within the clause is optional.
main clause
Dass man die Prüfung
ist schwierig.
besteht,
dass man die Prüfung
Schwierig ist (es),
besteht.
When the subordinate clause is in the first position, es is omitted. For reasons of emphasis, the
demonstrative pronoun das can be placed in the first position of the main clause.
subject = subordinate clause main clause
Dass man die Prüfung
(das) ist schwierig.
besteht,
As an object, it functions as follows :
subordinate clause = object main clause
Dass er die Prüfung
bezweifle ich.
besteht,
dass er die Prüfung
Ich bezweifle (es),
besteht.
When a clause functions as an object and follows the main clause, es can only be inside the clause
and never in the beginning. Usually, though, it can be omitted.
When the subordinate clause is in the first position, es is omitted. For reasons of emphasis, the
demonstrative pronoun das can be placed in the first position of the main clause.
object = subordinate clause main clause
Dass er die Prüfung besteht, (das) bezweifle ich.
Note
1. Es cannot be used to form a prepositional object. Instead, pronominal adverbs are used.
Examples
Ich kümmere mich um es, dass alles gut Ich kümmere mich darum, dass alles gut
läuft. läuft.
preposition + es = FALSE pronominal adverb = RIGHT
Pseudo-subject (to give emphasis to the real subject)
When functioning as a pseudo-subject, pronoun es is used in the beginning of the clause and replaces
the real subject. This way, emphasis is placed on the (real) subject.
Examples real subject of the clause
Es steht eine junge Frau am Eingang. eine junge Frau
Es kommen viele Leute zur Party. viele Leute
Es sind besonders die Kinder, die
die Kinder
darunter leiden.
The real subject determines the person and number according to which the verb will be conjugated,
not es.
If the real subject of the sentence or another sentence argument is in the first position, es is omitted.
Examples
Eine junge Frau steht am Eingang. Am Eingang steht eine junge Frau.
Viele Leute kommen zur Party. Zur Party kommen viele Leute.
Impersonal subject / object
Es functions as a subject to impersonal verbs or as an object in certain fixed expressions.
Examples
Es regnet stark. Ich habe es eilig.
Heute gibt es viele Studienmöglichkeiten. Mach ´s gut!
subject object
dative
uns euch sich
accusative
The reflexive pronoun agrees with the sentence object in person and number.
Example 1
im Urlaub vor allem
Ich will mich
erholen.
1. person 1. person
singular singular
Example 2
Ihr interessiert euch für Politik.
2. person 2. person
plural plural
With verbs that are only used as reflexive, the reflexive pronoun is considered part of the verb and does
not express a reflexive meaning. This also applies to reflexive verbs I, which can be used as reflexive
but not exclusively as such.
Examples
Sie muss sich beeilen. verbs only used as reflexive
Er ärgert sich sehr darüber. verbs used also as reflexive (group I)
On the other hand, in regard to verbs of group II, the reflexive pronoun is the object of these verbs and
is identical to the subject.
Sie wäscht sich jeden Tag. verbs used also as reflexive (group II)
Depending on verb valency, a reflexive pronoun can be an accusative, dative or prepositional object.
Examples
Wann ziehst du dich an? accusative object
Ich kaufe mir ein neues Handy. dative object
Sie kann auf sich nicht aufpassen. prepositional object
Reflexive or personal pronouns in infinitive or participle clauses
The following rule usually applies to infinitive or participle clauses.
Rule: The reflexive pronoun refers to the subject of the infinitive or the participle and the personal
pronoun to the subject of the clause. However, this does not happen when a preposition is present. In this
case, only the reflexive pronoun can be used, referring either to the subject of the clause or the subject of
the infinitive/participle.
Examples
reflexive pronoun refers to the
Ich sehe ihn sich anziehen.
infinitive subject
Das Kind sah seine personal pronoun refers to the verb + accusative
Mutter esanziehen. clause subject object + infinitive
Er hörte die Leute über reflexive pronoun refers to the
sich lachen. clause or the infinitive subject

Wir haben uns begrüßt. Wir haben einander begrüßt.
Sie haben sich getroffen. Sie haben einander getroffen.
reflexive pronoun reciprocal pronoun
Possessive pronouns are often used as articles before a noun.

article pronoun
The demonstrative pronoun der, die, das can be used to refer to something already mentioned or to
something that will be mentioned later.
When the demonstrative pronouns der, die, das refer to something already mentioned, they refer to a
word.
Examples
Mein altes Auto? Das habe ich schon verkauft.
Wer ist der alte Herr? Den habe ich schon mal gesehen.
Neuter singular type of the demonstrative pronouns can also refer to a whole sentence.
Examples
Meine Frau verlassen? Das würde ich nie tun.
Nicht aufs Konzert gehen? Das kannst du vergessen.
When the demonstrative pronouns der, die, das refer to something that will be mentioned later, a relative
clause, which further defines the demonstrative pronoun, follows.
Examples
Die, die mir helfen, sind meine besten Freunde.
Wir erwarten das, was er uns versprochen hat.
deren / derer
In the genitive case plural, types deren and derer are used. When the demonstrative pronoun refers to
something already mentioned, the genitive form deren is used; when it refers to something that will be
mentioned later, the genitive form derer is used.
Examples
die Erfahrungen derer, die im Ausland
die Studenten und deren Erfahrugen
studiert haben

Note 1
The demonstrative pronoun das is not used exclusively for neuter gender nouns in the singular number,
when the verb sein sein is present.
Examples
Das sind meine Kinder.
Das ist seine Wohnung.
Ist das der neue Chef?
Note 2
The difference between the demonstartive pronoun der, die, das and dieser, diese, dieses / jener, jene,
jeneslies in the fact that der, die, das does not give any information regarding the position of the person
or thing to which it refers, while dieser, diese, dieses indicates proximity and jener, jene, jenes indicates
distance.
Note 3
The difference between dessen / deren and the possessive article sein / ihr lies in the fact that the
demonstrative pronoun dessen / deren cannot refer to the subject of the sentence.
Examples
Peter traf seine Schwester deren and ihre refer to "die Peter traf seine Schwester
und deren Freunde. Schwester von Peter" und ihre Freunde.

Note 1
The demonstrative pronouns dies (short for dieses) and jenes, as well as the demonstrative
pronoun das, are not used exclusively for neuter gender nouns in the singular number, when the
verb sein is present.
Examples
Dies sind meine Kinder.
Dies ist seine Wohnung.
Jenes sind meine Schüler.
In addition, similar to the demonstrative pronoun das, dies can refer to a whole sentence.
Examples
Sie hat die Einladung abgelehnt. Dies hat alle überrascht.
Note 2
Demonstrative pronouns dieser and jener can be used the same way as the
expressions Ersterer and Letzterer, to refer to two different nouns that have already been mentioned.
Examples
Es gibt Luft- und Meeresverschmutzung. Diese / Letztere ist auf die Abwässer zurückzuführen,
jene / erstere auf die Autoabgase.
Expressions der eine - der andere do not indicate a specific order.
Examples

Exclamations
The pronoun was für ein -like the pronoun welcher- is also used in exclamations.
Examples

=
Grenze nicht übertreten. nicht übertreten.
Derjenige, dem das Essen nicht schmeckt, = Wem das Essen nicht schmeckt, der* zahlt

* When the relative and the demonstrative pronoun are not in the same case, the main clause that follows
must be introduced with the demonstrative pronoun. Otherwise, it can be omitted.
2. Was can be used as a relative pronoun in the place of the demonstrative pronoun das and a relative
pronoun. As mentioned, it can only refer to non-persons.
Examples
Das, was sehr interessant ist, ist das Was sehr interessant ist, ist das

Das, was du gesagt hast, ist absurd. = Was du gesagt hast, ist absurd.
Alternatively, was is used when the relative pronoun refers to neuter gender indefinite pronouns (alles,
nichts, einiges, etwas, manches, vieles, weniges), neuter gender demonstrative pronouns (das, dasselbe,
dasjenige) and neuter gender nominalized adjectives in the superlative.
Examples
Alles, was ich weiß.

Notes :
1.To emphasize the indefiniteness, the pronoun etwas can be combined with "irgend-" (irgendetwas).
2. If etwas or nichts is followed by a nominalized adjective, this adjective is of the neuter gender singular
and is inflected according to the rules of the third declension of adjectives.
Examples

one kind. In the plural, it indicates a non-specific set of people or things of one kind. Compared
to welcher, irgenwelcher emphasizes the indefiniteness.
Function: In contrast to the pronoun welcher, which is used only as a pronoun in the place of a
noun, irgendwelcher is used both as a pronoun and an article.
The pronoun irgendwelcher, irgendwelche, irgendwelches is inflected like the indefinite

Note
The combination of a preposition with es is impossible. Instead, pronominal adverbs are used. If a
corresponding pronominal adverb does not exist or if one refers to persons or animals, the noun must be
repeated.
Examples

Pronominal adverb "da +" can be used as Korrelat (word that represents the subordinate clause in the
main clause), when a subordinate clause functions as a prepositional object. The pronominal adverb is
in the main clause and can often be omitted. The verb of the main clause determines whether the use of
the pronominal adverb is obligatory or not.

4. When the relative clause refers to a whole clause .
Examples
Die Leute kamen zu spät, worüber er sich sehr geärgert hat.
Prepositions
K10
Words like the following are called prepositions.
für, mit, an, von, in, wegen, zu, statt, ohne, bis
Prepositions are non-inflected words that usually accompany other words in order to express a temporal,
causal, modal or spatial relationship between two facts.
Examples
Der Zug fährt um 8 Uhr ab. temporal
Er ist aus beruflichen Gründen auf Reisen. causal
Paul ist zu Fuß zur Arbeit gegangen. modal
Das Buch liegt auf dem Nachttisch. spatial
Prepositions are combined with a noun or a pronoun -more seldom with an adverb- thus creating a
prepositional phrase.
Examples
Ich wohne mit meiner Freundin. + noun
Ich wohne mit ihr. + pronoun
Ich wohne ab heute mit meiner Freundin. + adverb
In the German language, prepositions usually precede the word with which they are combined. However,
there are certain prepositions that can either precede or follow the word with which they are combined,
others that only follow and finally, others that stand both before and after the word with which they are
combined.
Examples
before the word they are combined
auf der Straße
with
gegenüber dem Rathaus before or after the word they are
dem Rathaus gegenüber combined with
Free and bound use of prepositions
As far as the use of prepositions is concerned, we can distinguish two categories: the free and the bound
use of prepositions.

Accusative or dative?
When two-way prepositions form prepositional phrases that function as place modifiers, the choice of
case depends on whether the meaning expressed denotes movement, (i.e. direction towards a point ) or
not (i.e. a state).
If movement is expressed, the two-way preposition governs the accusative case; if state is expressed,
the dativecase is used.
movement (direction) = accusative
state = dative
The most important verb categories that denote movement or state are shown in the table below.
verbs of movement verbs of state

Group C consists of verbs that always denote state. A prepositional phrase that functions as a place
modifier is obligatory.
Examples

Group D consists of verbs that always denote state. The difference to Group C is that for Group D verbs
a prepositional phrase that functions as a place modifier is not obligatory.

Some prepositions can either precede or follow the word they accompany. However, this is only possible
when that word is a noun. When accompanying a pronoun, the preposition either only precedes or only
follows. As far as adverbs are concerned, the preposition can either precede or follow only with
adverbs entlang and gegenüber. None of the prepositions of this group is used with adjectives.

Obligatory and impossible article and preposition merges
Obligatory merge
The merge of a preposition with the definite article is obligatory in certain cases.
1. Fixed expressions
Examples
jemanden ins Herz treffen
jemandem schlägt das Herz bis zum Hals
die Dinge beim Namen nennen
zur Sache kommen
im Sinne von
ans Licht bringen

im Winter
vom ersten Abend
bis zum 31. Januar
4. Geographical names that are accompanied by an article
Examples
im Schwarzwald
die Beziehungen zur Türkei
Frankfurt am Main
ans Mittelmeer fahren
bis zum Bodensee
Impossible article and preposition merges
The merge of the definite article and a preposition is sometimes impossible.
1. When the definite article is used as a demonstrative pronoun (with the meaning of dieser or jener).
Examples
zu dem Arzt gehen wir nie wieder hin
bei dem Frisör war ich seit langen nicht
mehr
in das Restaurant gehen wir einmal im
Monat
2. When a relative clause follows. The definite article functions like the demonstrative pronoun derjenige.
Examples
wir saßen an dem Tisch, an dem er jetzt
sitzt
geh zu dem Arzt, der mir auch geholfen hat
wir wohnen in dem Haus, das Herr Maier
verkaufen will
Conjunctions

Use
MA2
Conjunctions are used to connect clauses (or sentence arguments) to each other. According to their
use, they are classified into coordinating conjunctions and subordinating conjunctions.
Coordinating conjunctions connect main clauses, subordinate clauses (depending on the same main
clause) and sentence arguments with identical syntactic function.

Notes on word order
When connecting main clauses with two-part conjunctions, attention must be paid to the following:
entweder - oder
Clause 1 Clause 2
entweder is oder is
in the clause, like
at the beginning (Ex. 1, 2) at the beginning
an adverb (Ex. 3)
thefinite verb is the finite verb is

(Ex. 1) adverb (Ex. 2)
the finite verb is the finite verb is
in the second position after sondern in the second position
* Unlike the first part nicht nur, that is an inseparable unit, the second part sondern auch is not considered
as one unit.
Examples
(1) Nicht nur fährt er mich zum Flughafen, sondern (er) trägt auch meine Koffer bis zum Abflugschalter.
(2) Er fährt mich nicht nur zum Flughafen, sondern (er) trägt auch meine Koffer bis zum Abflugschalter.
sowohl - als auch / sowohl - wie auch
Two-part conjunctions sowohl - als auch / sowohl - wie auch are mainly used for connecting sentence
arguments (Ex.2 and 3) and more seldom for connecting main clauses (Ex.1) or subordinate clauses
(Ex.4).
A prerequisite for the connection of two main clauses is that both clauses have the same subject and the
same finite verb form.
Clause 1 Clause 2
sowohl is als auch / wie auch is
in the clause, as an
at the beginning (Ex.1)
adverb (Ex.1)
the finite verb is the finite verb is

(Ex.1) Clause II
Examples
(1) Er hat mich sowohl zum Flughafen gefahren als auch meine Koffer bis zum Abflugschalter getragen.
(2) Sie haben mir sowohl beim Kofferpacken als auch beim Koffertragen geholfen.
(3) Sowohl er als auch sein Bruder haben mich beim Kofferpacken geholfen.

the finite verb is the finite verb is
in the second position directly after noch
Examples
(1) Weder fährt er mich zum Flughafen noch trägt er meine Koffer bis zum Abflugschalter.
(2) Er fährt mich weder zum Flughafen noch trägt er meine Koffer bis zum Abflugschalter.
je - desto / je - umso
The first part je introduces a subordinate clause, while the second part desto / umso is at the beginning of
a main clause.
Clause 1 Clause 2
je + comparative is desto / umso + comparative is
at the beginning at the beginning
the finite verb is the finite verb is

Examples
(1) Je größer die Nachfrage nach Internetaktien ist, desto höher steigt deren Preis.
(2) Je größer die Nachfrage nach Internetaktien ist, umso höher steigt deren Preis.
ob - oder (ob)
The first part ob introduces a subordinate clause; the second part oder connects a second subordinate
clause that is also introduced by ob. The two sentences that are introduced by ob and oder depend on
another clause (Ex.1 and 2).
When this clause is a main clause, it can follow the subordinate clause; in this case, however, the finite
verb form of the main clause is in the second position (Ex.3).
Clause 1 Clause 2
ob is oder (ob) is

Particles
N10
Words like the following are called particles.
bloß, halt, ja, mal, überhaupt, wohl, eben, gerade, aber, ganz, nur, denn, selbst
Particles are not sentence constituents, are not inflected and have no comparative forms.
On a communicative level, particles clarify the intention of the speaker ; on another level, they
contribute to the clarification, emphasis, intensification or attenuation of an utterance and the
expression of the speaker’s thoughts and feelings (e.g. inner sympathy, impatience, doubt etc.).
The various shades of meaning that can be given to an utterance through the use of the
particle doch are presented below.
