 Direct and indirect objects are nouns

= The dative (indirect object) noun comes before the

accusative (direct object)

Ich kaufe meinem Sohn ein neues Buch.

He buys his daughter the new jacket.

Er kauft seiner Tochter die neue Jacke.

= The accusative (direct object) pronoun comes before the

dative (indirect object) pronoun.

Ich kaufe es ihm.

He buys it for her.

Er kauft sie ihr.

 One object is a noun, the other a pronoun
= The pronoun comes before the noun.

Ich kaufe ihm ein neues Buch.

He buys it for his daughter. He buys the jacket for her.
