Dino introduces himself with „Ich bin Dino.“ What is he saying? [I am Dino.] What is the subject of
the sentence? [ich] What is the verb? [bin] Is the verb in the present or past tense? [present]
German speakers use the present tense (das Präsens) when talking about what’s happening now.
Many verbs (like gehen) are REGULAR verbs because they all follow a pattern and use the same
endings. Other verbs (like haben and sein) are IRREGULAR because they do not follow a pattern
and must be memorized. Below are the forms of gehen, haben, and sein in the present tense:
! REGULAR VERBS
gehen (to go)
! ich gehe ! ! ! du* gehst!! er/sie/es geht !! wir gehen! ! ihr geht ! Sie/sie gehen
! I go, am going! ! you go, ...! ! he/she/it goes, ...! we go, ... ! ! you go, ...! you/they go, ...

! I have! ! ! ! you have! ! he/she/it has! ! we have!! ! you have! you/they have

What does Dino’s sentence „Ich habe Pizza gegessen.“ mean? [I have eaten or I ate pizza.] Is
the verb in the present or past tense? [past] What is the first verb? [habe] Which position is it in?
[second] What is the second verb? [gegessen] Which position is it in? [the end of the sentence]
When talking about what has already happened, German speakers usually use the conversational
past tense (das Perfekt). It is comprised of the present tense of the auxiliary verb haben (but
sometimes sein) + a past participle.
! •! For regular (weak) verbs, the past participle is often formed by adding the prefix ge- to the
! ! er/sie/es form of the present tense: ge- + kauft = gekauft.
! •! For irregular (strong) verbs, the past participle is often formed by adding the prefix ge- to
! ! the infinitive: ge- + sehen = gesehen.
The present tense form of haben or sein (p. 3) typically takes the SECOND position in the
sentence and the past participle comes at the END.

As a clue, one letter of each word is given for you.
When talking, German speakers usually use the conversational past tense (das Perfekt). (See p.
9.) However, when narrating a story, the narrative past tense (das Präteritum) is preferred. So, it’s
important to recognize this tense when you read German. Here is how the narrative past is formed:
• !For weak (regular) verbs, -te + new endings are added to the infintive stem: sagen –> sag + -te = sagte-.
! ich sagte! ! du sagtest ! ! er / sie / es sagte! wir sagten! ! ihr sagtet! ! Sie / sie sagten
• For strong (irregular) verbs, a similar set of endings (minus -te) is added to a new stem: singen –> sang-.
! ich sang! ! du sangst ! er / sie / es sang wir sangen! ! ihr sangt! ! Sie / sie sangen
Aktivität 4. Erkennst du das Präteritum? Can you recognize these narrative past tense
verbs? First list the infinitive and then write the English meaning of the underlined words.

What does the sentence „Ingrid setzte sich.“ mean? [Ingrid sat (herself) down.] The verb sich
setzen is called a “reflexive verb” because the action “reflects” back to the subject. Reflexive verbs
are listed in a dictionary with either sich or s. before the infinitive: sich setzen or s. setzen.
The reflexive verb formula is: subject + conjugated verb + corresponding reflexive pronoun. For
example: sich waschen –> Ich wasche mich. (I wash myself.) The reflexive pronouns are:
ich = mich du = dich er / sie / es = sich wir = uns ihr = euch Sie / sie = sich
Note: Many reflexive verbs may also be used like regular verbs: Ted rasiert den Hund. (Ted shaves the
dog.) vs. Ted rasiert sich. (Ted shaves himself.).
