1.5. Einsatzgebiete

1. General remarks
On the basis of our conditions of warranty GERHARDT products are guaranteed for one year.
That means that the apparatus must be used in accordance with following instructions and
the instrument is neither over- or improperly used.
Please be careful when unpacking the goods and make a note of any damage! The carrier
(post, rail, road) should be notified immediately and an expert's report obtained.
When you empty the condensate bottle or change the washing bottle solution you must
always wear safety glasses and safety gloves. As the catalyst contains trace metal salts, it is
necessary to dispose of the waste according to local regulations.

2. Description of unit (see page 5)
3. Installation
In general the TURBOSOG and the preseparator are supplied as a complete system - the
scrubber unit TUR/K (order no. 630010). It does not make sense to use the TURBOSOG on
its own as developing digestion vapours will not be concentrated and collected, which is
contrary to today's environment protection efforts.
The TURBOSOG was especially developed for GERHARDT-digestion systems
KJELDATHERM as well as for the conventional serial digestion systems with Kjeldahl flasks.
The system is connected via a fixed connection cable (pos. 18) to the mains socket.
The water inlet tube is a reinforced tube with brass screw fittings at each end. The 3/4" fitting
must be screwed on to the water inlet of the TURBOSOG (pos. 17) and the 1/2" fitting to the
tap.
The TURBOSOG is a closed system starting from the connection piece (pos. 11 - gas inlet
tube) to the water outlet pipe (pos. 13). In order to prevent vapours from escaping into the
laboratory, the water outlet pipe must be installed very carefully. Generally the water outlet
tube should be as short as possible and slope towards the sink.
Please make sure that this tube does not sag as collecting liquids would hinder the flow of
waste water.
The water outlet tube is connected to the TURBOSOG by means of a hose band clip.
In the following 2 methods are described of how to install the water outlet.
For clarification the diagrams show the TURBOSOG without preseparator.
12
Method 1
18
This is the optimal technique for connecting the waste water outlet.
The waste water pipe (pos. 13) must be plumbed with a sealed fitting into the drain beyond
the u-bend. This ensures that no vapours can escape from the drain into the laboratory.
The dummy plug can be left in the gas outlet pipe (pos. 15) of the TURBOSOG if Method 1 is
applied. In your own interest you should prefer this method to Method 2.
13
Method 2
In some cases the first version might not be possible. Then the waste water pipe (pos. 13)
must be pushed as far as possible down the sink drain. The vapour is removed by connecting
a 10 mm diameter tube (silicone or PVC) to the gas outlet tube (pos. 15) having first removed
the protective cap. The other end of this tubing must then be vented into a fume cupboard or
suitable area.
14
3.5. Internal tubing connections
The parts 6, 7, 10 and 11 are connected to the TURBOSOG at the factory. The short tube
(pos.11) is pushed onto the gas inlet pipe with the glass elbow facing to the rear of the
housing. The long tube (pos. 7) runs from the glass elbow to the lower outlet of the washing
bottle (pos. 4). The tube from the manifold (pos. 9) must run through the guide hole on the
rear right hand side of the TURBOSOG housing and is connected onto the lower inlet of the
condensate bottle (pos.5). The tube (pos. 6) runs between the upper inlet of the washing
bottle (pos. 4) and the upper inlet of the condensate bottle (pos.5).
If the TURBOSOG (pos. 8) is used without the preseparator, then the Isoversinic tubing (pos.
9) from the manifold must be connected directly onto the gas inlet pipe (pos. 11). The length
of the Isoversinic tubing between the condensate bottle and the exhaust manifold must be as
short as possible. It must not sag otherwise condensate will collect and thus reduce the
suction rate thus reducing the capacity.
When performing an acid digestion the washing bottle must be filled with 10 % NaOH or
concentrated sodium carbonate.
The TURBOSOG must be filled with water to ensure that the maximum suction power is
available. This is done by turning on the mains water and power switch (pos. 2) so allowing
water to flow into the TURBOSOG. The filling time is approx. 5 minutes due to the magnetic
restrictor valve only allowing a flow rate of 30 litres H2O per hour.
The suction rate is adjustable via the regulator screw (pos. 14).
To ensure that no fumes leak from the manifold begin with the regulator screw turned fully to
the right to allow maximum suction. Turning the screw towards the left will reduce the suction.
It is necessary to adjust the screw to suit your digestion conditions.
5. Maintenance program
If the TURBOSOG is run as described above, the condensate bottle must be emptied and
the content of the washing bottle changed at regular intervals. If the TURBOSOG is used
without the preseparator, it must be washed out every month with water as a sediment of the
catalyst metal (especially selenium and mercury) will collect. In order to clean the unit
disconnect the TURBOSOG from the mains, the water outlet tube (pos. 13) and the
Isoversinic tube (pos. 9). The apparatus is emptied through the waste water outlet tube (pos.
12). Then fill the unit with warm water (37-40° C). This is repeated until no waste is left.
Before you take up work again fill the TURBOSOG with water ace. to 4.2.
