B-EDS.06/1
CARBON DIOXIDE CO2 FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM
Introduction:
ƒ The remarkable effectiveness of carbon dioxide for fire extinguishing has long been known through Thousands
of installations in power plants, industrial plants, and oil refineries, electronic processes, on ships and in an
infinite variety of hazardous areas.
ƒ The three dimensional action of carbon dioxide means it can extinguish fires that burn both vertically and
horizontally. Fast moving & expanding gas penetrates through tiny openings to reach the most inaccessible and
hidden hazard areas.
ƒ CO2 is a colorless, odorless, dry, inert gas. After extinguishing a fire, it vaporizes fully leaving no residue,
nothing to clear up, no water damage. It is harmless to most materials and will not contaminate foodstuffs. It is
non-corrosive and a non-conductor of electricity so it can safely be used on delicate electronic equipment,
valuable art treasures, paintings or manuscripts.

Features:
ƒ Automatic operation without reliance on any Human interference,
ƒ No sealing disks to replace after operation,
ƒ All operating parts can be easily tested without dismantling.
ƒ Contents checking can be done without dismantling (Via DIMES Technology).
ƒ Does not require a padding pressure for flow through pipe work.

SYSTEM DESIGN
ƒ Details of system design for both total flooding and local application systems are contained in the NFPA 12.

FLEXIBLE DESIGN
ƒ The wide range of components enables systems to be both automatically or manually operated and arranged to
protect single or multi-zone hazards and with any number of reserve discharges. Automatic control can be
achieved manually, pneumatically or electronically or by any combination.
ƒ Facilities are available for providing a pre-alarm and delayed discharge as well as various methods of
preventing automatic release while protected rooms are occupied by personnel. Audible and visual indications
of system control can be provided.
ƒ CO2 is stored in steel cylinders with standard 67 liters filled with 45 Kg Co2 gas.
ƒ Different cylinder sizes are available for special requests
ƒ Any number of cylinders can be manifold together and simultaneously released to provide the total design
requirement.

SYSTEM TYPES

1- TOTAL FLOODING SYSTEMS

ƒ Total flooding systems extinguish fires by rapidly supplying an enclosed volume with enough carbon dioxide to
create an atmosphere that is incapable of supporting combustion.
ƒ The system is completely effective even in spaces with a limited amount of open area. No matter how severe
the flames may be, they are normally extinguished in the first 15 seconds of discharge.
ƒ Basic quantities of carbon dioxide for various space volumes may be calculated According to Co2
Concentration.
ƒ Some materials require more than the basic quantity to achieve extinction.

B-EDS.06/1
CARBON DIOXIDE CO2 FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM

2- LOCAL APPLICATION
ƒ This method of system design is used to protect unenclosed hazards where it is not possible to flood the entire
room. Discharge horns are placed where fires are expected to start and at points to which the fire will travel to
build up.
ƒ Either these installations, operated automatically or manually, two methods of CO2 quantity calculation are
available, the choice depending upon site configuration.
Volume Method
ƒ The volume method of system design is used where the fire hazard consists of three-dimensional irregular
objects that cannot easily be reduced to equivalent surface area.
ƒ The total discharge rate of the system is based on the volume of an assumed enclosure surrounding the hazard.
The basic design rate is 16 kg min rrr3 but this can be adjusted to actual site conditions, subject to the degree of
existing enclosure.
Area Method
ƒ The quantity of carbon dioxide required is based upon the total discharge rate from a carefully sited nozzle
arrangement, a sufficient number of nozzles being used to adequately cover the entire area on the basis of the
unit area protected by each nozzle.
ƒ For this method of design, nozzle characteristics' must be known in order to determine gas quantities in relation
to pattern coverage, at varying distances.
Hazard Flooding Factor
Dry electrical wiring and insulation 1.35 KG /m3
Computer equipment 1.50 KG /m3
Data processing and tape storage 2.25 KG /m3
Record stores/archives 2.00 KG /m3
Dust collectors 2.70 KG /m3

• RFI and EMF suppression prevents noise problems

to the fire alarm control panel

• Polarized for DC supervision

• Pigtail connection

• Standard 4 inch square electrical box mounting

• Weatherproof backbox available for outdoor

applications

• Red finish

Description Dimensions

Mircom’s BL-6B and BL-10B Motorized Steel Bells

are designed for today’s fire alarm applications. The
durable steel construction provides loud resonant tones
necessary for fire alarm installations.

The BL-6B and BL-10B bells use a varistor suppression

element to prevent RFI and EMF noise problems to
modern fire alarm control panels.

The motor used on the BL-6B and BL-10B bells

operate at a very low current (20 mA) to maximize the
number of bells per circuit. Both models are equipped
with a pigtail connection for wiring.

Both the BL-6B and BL-10B mount on a standard

4” square electrical box for indoor use or on a BB-
206WP weatherproof backbox for outdoor applications.
Mounting on a 4” octagon outlet box requires the MP-
101 Universal Mounting Plate.

Electrical Signaling
Electrical protective signaling systems are configurations of components used to produce alarm signals indicative of fire, smoke,
sprinkler waterflow or other emergency and to produce supervisory signals indicative of conditions needing attention with respect to
protection equipment or watch service. System configurations are classified according to where and how the signals are received.
The categories are commonly designated as local, municipal, remote station, proprietary, emergency voice/alarm communication,
emergency communication, and central station. Auxiliary systems are either local or proprietary systems interconnected with a
municipal system.
This category presents the major system component categories and the integrated system configurations. The selection of
components to form a hybrid system should be made only by those skilled in system design. Also, the suitability of any system
application should be judged on the basis of the hazard(s) being protected.

Local Protective Signaling

Local systems produce alarm and/or supervisory signals within the protected property, which may not be constantly attended. The
systems are electrically supervised, include a secondary power supply having sufficient capacity to operate the system for 24 hours
under maximum normal load and often are primarily for the purpose of providing occupant evacuation signals. Some local systems
also provide for signaling to a constantly attended remote location.
The heart of a signaling system consists of a control unit to which are connected the initiating and signal indicating circuits. The
control unit is usually in a separate enclosure, provides power to its external circuits, and often is of modular design to enable
flexibility in obtaining multiple functions. In a coded signaling system, transmitters may be either separate from or integral to a
control; they transmit to the control or from a control to remote receiving equipment. The equipment listed below, in conjunction
with peripheral devices, may be used to form a complete system or a portion of a multizone system.
