A. Relativpronomen im Nominativ, Akkusativ und Dativ. Complete the sentences to form relative clauses. In the
first few, you’ll only need to fill in the relative pronoun, but in the later sentences, you will need to write the
entire relative clause. Don’t forget to check gender and case, and to move the verb if needed!

B. Relativpronomen mit Präpositionen. Now try some sentences with prepositions. Remember that you’ll always
need to state the preposition before the relative pronoun (e.g. ‘the man to whom I’m talking’), and that the
case of the relative pronoun will depend on the preposition.
5. Der Bäcker hat sehr gutes Brot. Anna kauft ihr Brot bei dem Bäcker.

C. Definitionen. Relative pronouns are very common in definition statements (that’s a man from whom you buy
bread, etc). Try to write your own definitions of the following things below. Remember to check the antecedent
for gender, but the case of the relative pronoun will depend on the sentence you write.
D. Übersetzungen. In the sentences to translate below, the final sentence will use a relative pronoun, while the
two sentences that precede it are to help you decide what case and gender to use and how to structure the
sentence.

where needed!). Remember to watch for case and gender!

B. Ganze Sätze. Make one complete sentence (main clause + relative clause) out of the two provided. You’ll
need to just repeat at least the beginning of the first sentence, and turn the second sentence into a relative
clause.
C. Ein bisschen mehr. This section may be harder, because there’s nothing for you to refer to. You’ll need to
fill in the blanks with the appropriate relative pronoun, based on the gender of the noun it represents and the
case it takes in the relative clause.

E. Und übersetzen. Translate the sentences into German. Remember that sometimes the English sentences are
structured differently than German (e.g. “that” may be left out in English, but it’s needed in German, or the
preposition may be at the end in English, but at the beginning in German).
