1 Zweck
jeweiligen BMW Farburmuster gemessen (Standardmessung D65/10°).

SL = Helligkeitstoleranz
SC = Sättigungstoleranz
SH = Bunttontoleranz

1 Purpose
This work instruction describes the color measurement of test panels for initial and batch releases
of basecoats, including waterborne basecoats, waterborne repair systems (e.g. Color Pro IC), IPP
and body primer materials.
Note: For the measurement of bodies, finished vehicles and/or hang-on parts, it is referred to
AA-0161.
2 Scope of Application
This work instruction is binding for all Technology Material and Process Analysis departments
as well as for all external partners / suppliers carrying out colorimetry.
Note: Points 3.4 and 5 are the direct responsibility of the paint suppliers.
3.3 Production, Measurement and Delivery Conditions of Master and Batch Panels
3.3.1 Master Panels
The production, measurement and distribution regarding BMW basecoat color masters are
regulated as per AA-0128 and BMW primer masters as per AA-0200.
3.3.2 Batch Panels
The production of batch panels is to be achieved using the current plant specific process
parameters including film thickness, flash off and oven conditions for pre-treatment, e-coat,
primer, basecoat and clear coat. The batch panel spray parameters may be adjusted so that color
of the batch panel correlates to plant body color.
These parameters are to be obtained with the production plants.
Batch panels must be submitted to the BMW Technology Material and Process Analysis (TWA)
department properly labelled and in a suitable packing envelope.
The following information must be included on the batch panel label (Appendix 1) or on
accompanying documentation:
Þ Color name and number of the reference standard (Protocols and batch panel);
Þ Supplier formula number, batch number, batch size, clear coat formula number (Protocols
and batch panel label)
Þ Difference values of the batch panels (primer / uni: 45 °, metallic and pearl color: 15 °, 25 °,
45 ° and 75°; by multicolour additional -15°; Protocols and batch panel)
Þ Calculated D values (primer / uni: 45 °, metallic and pearl color: 15 °, 25 °, 45 ° and 75 °; by
multicolour additional -15°; batch panel)
Þ Metamerism index 45° for uni-basecoats for the light types A/10° and F11/10°; batch panel
Þ For xirallic colors: ∆ sparkle for 15 and 45 °
The following documents / panels are to be submitted to the responsible TWA department:
Þ The batch panel must be submitted at the latest, at the time of delivery of the paint material
to the defined TWA department for self-release batches. In parallel the associated test report
is to be uploaded onto the corresponding BMW Server (see AA-0012 or as agreed with the
responsible department of the AA). For batches not self-released, the batch cannot be
shipped until the batch panel is approved by the responsible TWA department.
Fundamentally the following is valid for all painted test panels: The paint application
direction is to be marked on the back of the panel before painting, the label on the back indicates
the alignment of the sensing head (read direction): The lighting direction is marked by an arrow
(e.g.è) at the color sensing head and must be aligned to the application direction (e.g. vertical
application, lighting direction from top to bottom).
3.4 Realisation of the Measurement
The color measurement of all test panels to be measured may be carried out at the earliest 30
minutes after completion of baking (prerequisite is cooling down to room temperature). Before
measurement the panels must be cleaned using a suitable soft cloth (Microfiber cloth) to remove
fingerprints and other contaminations. The temperature of the measurement environment, the
sensing head and the panels during measurement must be 23°C ± 2°C.
Revision: 3.0
AA-0354 Page 21 March 2022
If an average value is determined in individual cases without SMC-mode from e.g. n=12 single
measurements, this parameter setting is to be documented in the measurement record and/or in
the chosen reporting format.
3.4.2 General:
Þ For the batch release (primer and basecoats) the batch panel is measured in relation to the
respective BMW color master (standard measurement D65/10°). From the obtained
difference values the D values are calculated. These must fulfil the release criteria according
to sections 4.7 for basecoats (see section 4.3.3).
Þ The same procedure is valid for laboratory painted test panels as is for batch panels. In
addition, a visual evaluation according to AA-0403 and/or AA-0401 must be performed.

4.7.2.2 Batch Tinting Options (To BMW Digital Standard or to Master Batch Process)
The tinting of a batch to the BMW digital master (established correlation between the supplier
application booth and BMW plant) and tinting to a previous batch (master batch process) are both
acceptable methods. Only one of the two approaches is required for tinting of a batch.

Notes:
1. The supplier must always present the test certificates for the LEV, BV batch and the first
three batches of the series delivery to Chargen.Freigabe@bmw.de for each German and
UK (BMW, MINI) location. In the case of delivery of paint to a location outside Germany and
UK (BMW, MINI), they must also be presented to the locally responsible TWA
representatives. Further presentations of the test certificates may be required by TWA
based on an event-driven decision.
The associated batch panels of the LEV-, BV-batch and the first three series deliveries are
always to be sent to the Munich analytical department for each German and UK (BMW,
MINI) location. In the case of delivery of paint to a location outside Germany, they must also
be presented to the locally responsible TWA representatives. For tinting according to the
digital master, the batch panel has to be delivered.
From the 6th batch presentation (after the LEV, BV and 3 further batches), the supplier
receives the status of self-release. The granted self-release can be revoked by BMW at
any time. All inspection certificates are to be posted directly by the supplier to
pz-chargen@bmw.de, irrespective of whether the batch is BMW released or self-released
by supplier. For paint produced and delivered locally at other world-wide plants, the test
certificates and batch panels for the LEV, BV and first three batches are presented to the
locally responsible TWA representative. Approvals of series batches are managed by the
locally responsible TWA representative.
Revision: 3.0
AA-0354 Page 26 March 2022
2. By tinting the new batch according to the master batch process, a sample of the master
batch has to be sprayed. The created color panel of the master batch must be measured
against the batch panel of the new batch which will be presented. As part of the batch
presentation, the maximum permissible color deviation is D <0.75. Also the batch panel of
the master batch must be submitted to the TWA department.
3. Borderline batches will be visually evaluated by the relevant TWA department and a
decision made as to whether the batch can be released.
4. Should deviations be found and complaints made on the part of the TWA specialist in Plant
1, the supplier is required to carry out a root-cause analysis together with the TWA
specialist before delivery of the paint material. If the material is already in use, the actual
effect is evaluated at the line (evaluated instrumentally and visually) in the plants and a
correction action implemented for succeeding batches.
5. In the event that a basecoat batch is not released by the TWA department, a notification
shall be sent to the supplier, the affected plant specific TI-3y department and the Ty-3y
production area.
6. For basecoats with new effect pigments (e.g. Xirallic) that cause color measurement
issues, an agreement may be reached to release batches based on visual evaluation.
7. In the batch presentation of basecoat materials, it should be noted that the cross-hatch
test after 240 hours of the constant climate test, in accordance with the Munich TWA
department, is part of the test scope. The evaluation and documentation is monitored on a
supplier-specific basis (e.g. in the supplier meeting).
*: For LEVs the batch will be used to establish the masters. The goal of the LEV is to produce
a color position in line with the styling panel and in accordance with the stylist’s direction. Thus,
the measurement tolerances are broader in these cases.
**: In exceptional cases the defined measurement tolerances can be exceeded with a good
reason after consultation with the corresponding TWA department (e.g. due to complex color
characteristics, findings from the BMW network). However, this must be noted accordingly in the
batch test certificate.
***: The defined measurement tolerances can be exceeded with a good reason (e.g. necessary
tinting step to reach the color at the line). In this case, this reason must be noted accordingly in
the batch test certificate.

4.9 Release Criteria and Measurement of Glitter Effects (Sparkle) in Basecoats (e.g.
using the interference effect pigment Xirallic)
If new interference effect pigments are available in basecoats (colors), which generate glitter
and/or „Sparkle – appearances”, this effect can be measured technically e.g. using the color
measuring instrument, BYK-mac i, Co. Byk Gardner. In parallel to the conventional color metrics,
the „Sparkle-value” for a” 15°, 45°, 75° lighting geometry is calculated (the available 75° lighting
geometry does not play a big role for the Xirallic interference effect pigments and is not indicated
for these effect pigments either). The sparkle measurement is performed using a special camera
at 0°, i.e. vertically to the sample. With the aid of an analysis of a histogram, at which the glitter
count (Flashes of the interference effect pigments captured by the camera through the lighting
angles 15° and 45°) and their intensity is evaluated, the sparkle values are calculated.
The sparkle grade is therefore a function of the Sparkle area and the Sparkle intensity.
Þ S _G = S _i×S _ a +t
In this case it is a two-dimensional system.
A tolerance system was developed; and the following variables were introduced:
4.9.1 Sparkle-grade as distances of the hyperbolas which show an unequivocal distinction of the
visual sparkle impression.
e.g. Absolute sparkle intensity: S_i and absolute Sparkle-area: S_a

The maximum permitted tolerances for white, and color standard are stored in the device; i.e.
should a required value transgression occur during the calibration, this is acknowledged by the
device. In this case the calibration is to be repeated; should a transgression occur again, the device
must be sent to the BYK Gardner.
The absolute L*, a*, b* color values for the angles -15°, 15°, 25°, 45°, 75° and 110° for the white
and color standard tiles are stored in the cover of the standard box. The related standards exhibit
the device’s CAT.NO and SER.NO.
The color standard tile is measured before the start of work daily. The standard is measured like a
sample and stored in data base (the same as master panel). Following tolerances are maximum
acceptable:
dL ≤ 0,1 da ≤ 0,1 db ≤ 0,1
Maintenance:
The recertification of the color device has to be performed every two years by the
manufacturer.
6 Repair
Repairs are to be performed by the manufacturer or a qualified company. The documentation is in
the device folder or is regulated by the supplier.
