Konjunktionen ( Connectors)

Null Position Konnektoren :

Regel : There are five Null Position Konnektoren. Whenever we use a Null –
Position Konnektor,, the second sentence remains as it is. No change takes
place in the second sentence.
- und (and)
- oder (or)
- aber (but)
- denn (because)
- sondern (rather / but)

Beispielsatz / Example Sentences :

- Ich lerne Deutsch. + Ich liebe die Sprache (connecting using “denn”)

= Ich lerne Deutsch, denn ich liebe die Sprache.

- Er will kommen. + Er hat keine Zeit. (connecting using “aber”)

= Er will kommen, aber er hat keine Zeit.

- Ich bin nicht zu der Bank gegangen. + Ich bin in das Kino gegangen.
(connecting using “sondern”)

=Ich bin nicht zu der Bank gegangen, sondern ich bin in das Kino gegangen.

Normale Konnektoren :

Regel / Rule : There are many Normale Konnektoren. Whenever we use a

Normale Konnektor, the second sentence changes. In the second sentence, the
verb of the 2nd position goes to the end.
Imp : The 2nd position’s verb goes to the end in the conjugated form.

using “weil”)

- Ich lerne Deutsch. + Ich kann eine Stelle finden. (connecting using
“damit”)

= Ich lerne Deutsch, damit ich eine Stelle finden kann.

- Er hat eine Fremdsprache gelernt. Er hat viel geübt.

= Er hat eine Fremdsprache gelernt, indem er viel geübt hat.

Verb, Verb Rule :

It is also possible to start a sentence with a Normale Konnektor. That

means, we can use the Normale Konnektor in the first part as well.
There, the structure will get affected like this : In the first sentence, the
verb of 2nd Position will go to the end, whereas in the second sentence,
the verb of the 2nd Position will come to the beginning.

Beispiel Satz / Example Sentence:

- Es regnet sehr schwer. + Ich gehe draußen mit meinen Freunden. (using
the connector “obwohl” in the first part)

= Obwohl es sehr schwer regnet, gehe ich draußen mit meinen

Freunden.

- Wir sind nach Paris gefahren. Wir haben den Eiffelturm gesehen. (using
the connector “als” in the first part)

= Als wir nach Paris gefahren sind, haben wir den Eiffelturm gesehen.

Regel / Rule : The following words are words, which look and feel like
connectors, but they are not connectors. These words are normal words.

Imp : Since these words are not connectors, they are not zero – position
words. That means, their position will be counted in a sentence. For
example, if we start our sentence with any of these words, then we need
to put the verb right after them, as this word will be counted as 1st
Position and the verb must always come at the 2nd Position.

- Es hat schwer geregnet. Trotzdem bin ich draußen gegangen. Oder

- Es hat schwer geregnet. Ich bin trotzdem draußen gegangen.

- Sie ist dieses Jahr nach Deutschland umgezogen. Vorher war sie in
Indien. Oder
- Sie ist dieses Jahr nach Deutschland umgezogen. Sie war vorher in
Indien.

Imp : In all these sentences, we can see that these words don’t have a fixed
position. They function like adverbs (heute, gestern, heutzutage etc). We can
put them anywhere.
