MAIN TOPIC: Introduction to chemistry.

SUB-TOPIC: The concept of chemistry.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE: Within 40 minutes each form one ‘A’ students should be able to

explain the importance of chemistry in a daily life.

COMPETENCE: Students should have the ability to use chemistry skills and knowledge in

a daily life.

Qn 1. Chemistry is an important subject due to widely applications in life. The knowledge

and skills of chemistry are also very important in our daily lives as they are widely applied in

different areas. Basing on the above statement list six application of chemistry in a daily life.

MAIN TOPIC: Soil chemistry.

SUB-TOPIC: Plant nutrient in a soil.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE: Within 40 minutes each form four students should be able to

scientific skills to investigate the nature and properties of soil.

COMPETENCE: Students should have the ability to determine the nature and properties of

soil.
Qn 2. Classify the different components of soil based on their chemical composition. And

how would you differentiate between organic and inorganic component of the soil.

MAIN TOPIC: Heat sources and flames.

SUB- TOPIC: Types of Flames.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE: within 40 minutes student should have ability to state the uses of

different types of flames.

COMPETENCE: Student should have the ability to use various Chemistry apparatus

properly to perform different activities and experiments;

Qn 1. Conclude that you are doing an experiment the laboratory at 07:30pm and suddenly the

lights went off. Give two reasons to justify the fact that you would consider luminous flame

rather than non-luminous flame as an alternative source for lighting?

Qn 2. Agree non-luminous flame is preferred most to be used as the source of heat than

luminous flame.

SUB- TOPIC: Separation of mixtures

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE: within 40 minutes student have an ability to known how to

separate different mixture into pure compounds.


COMPETENCE: Student have an ability to apply different methods to separate mixtures

into pure components.

Qn 3. Fractional distillation separates the miscible liquids with different boiling points.

Assume you are in the laboratory and you want to separate water and ethanol which have

boiling points of 100 and 72 degree of centigrade respective.

i. Which liquid distils first and why?

ii. What role does fractionate column play?

MAIN TOPIC: Fuels and energy.

SUB-TOPIC: Uses of Fuel.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: Within 40 minutes Student should have an ability to assess the

environmental effects on using charcoal and firewood as source of fuel.

COMPETENCE: Student should be able to use fuels efficiently and sustainability with

environmental consideration.

Qn 4. A large number of Tanzania society are using firewood and charcoal as a source of fuel

for domestic uses because it is very cheap and readily available but it has a negative effect in

the environment. Asses the effect of such fuel in the environment,

MAIN TOPIC: The scientific procedure.

SUB-TOPIC: Application of the Scientific Procedure.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE: within 40 minutes student should be able to use the scientific

procedure to carry out investigations in Chemistry.

COMPETENCE: Student should have the ability to apply the Scientific Procedure to carry

out investigations in Chemistry.

Qn 1. Assume most students in your class fail to perform a certain chemistry experiment

assigned by the teacher.


i. Develop a problem that you can investigate.

ii. Formulate the hypothesis.

iii. Discuss shortly about dependent variable, an independent variable and a control variable

in your investigation.

iv. Design an experiment to test your variable.

MAIN TOPIC: air, combustion, firefighting and rusting.

COMPETENCE: Ability of students to dealing with nature and properties of Air and its

composition of matter, combustion, Rusting and Fire fighting.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE: Within 40 minutes the students should be able to explain the

nature of Air, combustion, Rusting, properties of gases and Firefighting.

Qn 2. Explain how your apparatus works and the chemical reactions involved in its

operation. Justify why you believe it would be an improvement over existing firefighting

method.

Qn 3. Justify your choice based on chemical properties and reactions involved in preventing

rust.

MAIN TOPIC: introduction to chemistry.

SUB-TOPIC: The Importance of Chemistry in Life.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: Within 40 minutes students should be able to:


i. mention areas where Chemistry is applied.

ii. state the importance of Chemistry in daily life.

COMPETENCE: Student should have the ability to use Chemistry skills and knowledge in

daily life.

Qn 4. Mr Akimbo is a student at Feza boy’s secondary school, one day he visted his teacher

called Mr. Malihini at home who teach them chemistry subject. Mr. Akimbo as a student

tries to ask a lot of questions to his teacher about chemistry. Mr. Akimbo asked his teacher

about applications of chemistry in their daily life. The teacher gives a lot of explanation about

areas where chemistry applied and Mr. Akimbo satisfied with answers given. Also, Mr.

Akimbo ask other question to teacher Malihini as “sorry sir I have other question, then sir

Malihini allow him to asks, Mr. Akimbo ask, “sir is there any significance of studying

chemistry”. imagine that you are Mr. Malihini answer this question asked by Mr. akimbo to

his teacher. SIX points in terms of essay.
