The word "kein" is used to negate words with indefinite articles and generally nouns without articles. The form of
the word "kein" will change. In the singular, it will change as indefinite articles do.
Beispiele:
Ist das ein Apfel? – Nein, das ist kein Apfel. Das ist eine Birne.
Kauft Inge Birnen? – Nein, Inge kauft keine Birnen.
Negation: nicht/kein
Negation with nicht
If the word nicht is used to negate a word or group of words, then the word nicht is placed directly before the word
it is negating.
Examples:
Adjectives:
Sind die Birnen frisch? – Nein, die Birnen sind nicht frisch.
Adverbs:
Isst Inge gerne Birnen? – Nein, Inge isst nicht gerne Birnen.
If an entire sentence is being negated, then nicht comes at or near the end of the sentence.
Negation with kein
With kein, we negate nouns with indefinite articles and most nouns with no article.
The word kein changes form. In the singular, it takes the form of the indefinite article.
Beispiel:
Ich putze (nicht) gern das Bad.
Ich koche (nicht) gern.
Ich räume (nicht) gern die Wohnung auf.
Ich räume (nicht) gern die Spülmaschine ein.
Ich räume (nicht) gern die Spülmaschine aus.
Ich bereite (nicht) gern das Essen vor.
Ich spüle (nicht) gern.
