1a Read the text about Ireland. Then choose the correct options.
The Potato Famine in Ireland
During the summer of 1845, the potato famine destroyed Ireland’s potato crop, the most important
crop for the Irish. Over the next ten years, more than 750,000 Irish people died and another two
million fled. Some went to Great Britain and some to Canada, but the majority went to America. The
Irish people who left for America knew they would never see Ireland again, but they hoped they
would have a better future in their new home. However, life there was difficult when they arrived.
The Irish were foreigners in the new country and the American people didn’t give them much
support. Irish people found it difficult to get houses or jobs. They were poor, and many became ill
and died. Things got a lot better for the Irish over the next hundred years, but to start with, they paid
a price for wanting a new life in America.

Reading
1 Read the text. Then tick T (True) or F (False).
St Patrick and the shamrock*
St Patrick brought the Catholic religion to Ireland. He used a plant to help him teach the
Irish about his religion. And this plant was the shamrock. Shamrock is the Irish name for
the clover* that grows all over Ireland. The shamrock has got three leaves. Three was a
lucky number for the Irish. And three is also a special number for Catholics.
This plant is a part of Ireland’s history. Around 1845, there was nothing to eat in Ireland. So
people ate the shamrock. Later, the English began to take Irish land. So many Irish people
started to wear the shamrock to show that they were against the English. Today this plant is
still a symbol of Ireland.
T F
1 The shamrock helped St Patrick to bring the Catholic religion to Irish people.
2 The shamrock was once used for food.
3 The English were not interested in Ireland.
4 The shamrock isn’t important for the Irish today.
5 This text could be from a history book.

Reading
1 Read the text about a famous murder case. Then choose the correct answers.
A famous case
It was the morning of 4 August,1892 in a small
town in Massachusetts. Andrew Borden was
at work at the bank. His daughter Emma was
away on a trip. Andrew’s younger daughter,
Lizzie, was at home. So was his second wife,
Abby. At about nine a.m., Abby asked the
servant to wash the windows on the first floor.
At the same time, Abby went into the bedroom
to make the bed. It was the last time anyone
saw her alive.
Lizzie Borden was a suspect, but police couldn’t prove that she was the murderer. If she was,
why did she do it? No one will ever know. But people were, and still are, very interested in this
crime. It has brought lots of tourists to the town. You can even stay in the house where the
murders happened – it’s now a small hotel.
1 Who was not at home that day? 3 Why didn’t Andrew see the murderer?
Emma Because he was in the living room.
the servant Because he was lying down.
Andrew’s wife Because he was probably sleeping.
2 When did someone last see Abby alive? 4 Why did the servant go upstairs at 11.30 a.m.?

A strange telegram
Irene Wilkins was a 31-year-old school cook who lived with her mother in London. Just before
Christmas in 1921, she put an advertisement* in the local newspaper because she was looking
for a new job.
The advertisement appeared on the morning of December 20th and that same day she got a
telegram asking her to catch the 4.30 train to Bournemouth. The name at the bottom of the
telegram was ‘Wood, Beech House’.
Irene quickly sent a telegram confirming the meeting, then left for the train station. Not long
after she had left the house, however, the telegram she had sent to Wood at Beech House
came back to the post office. The reason? The address was unknown. By late evening, when her
daughter still hadn’t come home, Mrs Wilkins reported her missing.
A farmer discovered Irene’s body under some bushes. Someone had murdered her. Police
believed the person who had written the telegram had been the murderer, and studied it for
clues.
It had several spelling* mistakes, and they discovered similar telegrams had been sent to other
women, who luckily had decided not to go to Bournemouth to meet ‘Wood’.
After a witness reported seeing a car near the murder scene, the police had a suspect; a driver
named Thomas Henry Allaway. When they arrested him, they asked him to write out everything
in one of the telegrams. Allaway made all the same spelling mistakes. The case was closed – the
police had found the evidence they needed.

With so much delicious food in our supermarkets, it’s easy to buy things that we don’t need.
This means that people often have more food than they can eat before its ‘use-by’ date.

Dear Mandy,
It’s hard to have a friend with an eating problem. They usually don’t want to
talk about it. But you can try to help your friend anyway.
People who stuff themselves and throw up can become very ill. They don’t often
go and see a doctor. They need friends and family to take the first steps for
them. Perhaps you should talk to an adult. Or look up some websites on the
internet.
Your friend might not want your help at first. Be honest with your friend; tell

CAROLINE’S BLOG
There are many charities that
work hard to protect the Great
Barrier Reef. I spent a week with one
of them.
➠ Day 1
I’m really tired after my long flight, but it’s great to be here. I’m working with eleven other
volunteers and they’re all very friendly. Our team leader is called Mark. He’s very interesting
and he knows a lot about wildlife.
➠ Day 2
We spent today cleaning the beach. Plastic is a huge danger to sea life. They can mistake it for
food or get trapped in it. I collected two bags of rubbish, so I was pleased with my work!
Tomorrow, we start work at the Turtle Rescue Centre on Fitzroy Island.
➠ Day 3
We got up and had breakfast early this morning. Our ferry was at 7.30. I spent the day cleaning
the turtles’ tanks with Lara, a university student from Salzburg. We worked really hard, but we
didn’t see any turtles!
➠ Day 4
We took the ferry to Fitzroy Island again. This time, I helped to prepare food for the turtles.
I must have chopped up hundreds of vegetables! The best part of the day was feeding the turtles
their lunch!
➠ Day 5
Today, we stayed at the centre to prepare for our trip tomorrow. We’re going on a dive at the
Great Barrier Reef. Mark wants us to record information about the animals and coral. We all
have a chart, an underwater camera and a set of instructions. I can’t wait!
➠ Day 6
Today was amazing! We spent the morning diving in the sea around the coral reef. I saw seven
different types of fish and lots of different coloured coral. I hope that the information I recorded
will be useful. I go home tomorrow! J
➠ Day 7
It’s been a really interesting week and I’m sad to be leaving. I’ve swapped email addresses with
the other volunteers so we can stay in touch. Mark wants us to tell other people about the trip
so that they can come and volunteer, too.

Presenter Hello and welcome to Teen Views. The topic of this week’s show is collections. When
I was a kid, my friends and I used to collect all kinds of things: stamps, football cards,
comics, different kinds of toys … But is collecting things still popular with young
people today? Our first caller is Daisy. Hi, Daisy, do you think young people still collect
things?
Daisy Yes, I think they do, but the things that they collect are different. None of my friends
collect stamps or comics, for example.
Presenter So what do people collect?
Daisy Well, my friends and I collect stickers.
Presenter Stickers? But kids have always collected stickers, haven’t they?
Daisy Yes, but I don’t mean paper stickers. I mean stickers for my phone. I use them in
messages.
Presenter Oh, I see! Of course! So how many stickers have you got?
Daisy I’ve got about 200. I didn’t start my collection long ago. Some of my friends have got
more than 500.
Presenter And is it expensive?
Daisy No, not at all. That’s one of the best things about it. They’re often free. Sometimes you
have to buy them, but they only cost about one or two pounds for about 30 stickers.
Presenter That sounds great. Thanks for calling, Daisy. Next, we’ve got Leon. Hello, Leon, do you
collect anything?
Leon Yes, I do. I collect old records.
Presenter But today you can download any song that you like and listen to it. It’s easy! Why do
you need records?
Leon Well, I don’t need them – because I download a lot of music – but I love collecting
them! Some of my albums have amazing pictures on the front. And on the back, there’s
a list of all the songs, with information about who wrote and performed them. You
don’t get that with downloads.
Presenter I suppose that’s true. So, what made you start collecting records?
Leon My dad gave me some of his old records. I thought they were really interesting, so I
started going to markets and second-hand shops and collecting more of them.
Presenter That’s a great story. Thanks for telling us about your collection, Leon.

I’ve got about 70 of these. Sometimes I buy them from music shops or online, but

Paul Hello and welcome to our podcast about male body image. I’m psychologist Paul Yardley
and our guest today is Luke. Luke, body image has been a big issue for you, hasn’t it?
Luke Yes, that’s right. As a young child, I was always a bit overweight, but this only became a
big problem for me when I started to use social media.
Paul And why was that?
Luke Everyone always looks perfect in their photos – great skin, great hair, very slim. I wasn’t
like that at all.
Paul A lot of people spend a long time on their appearance before they take a selfie, of course.
Luke I know. And they often edit the photos afterwards! But I didn’t think about that at the time.
I just wanted to be like the people I saw in photos.
Paul So what did you do?
Luke I started to go to the gym. It was great to begin with. I was much happier because I was
fitter and healthier.
Paul So what went wrong?
Luke I suppose I became obsessed. I went to the gym more and more often. I knew I looked
better than I did before, but I never thought I looked good enough.
Paul And how did your parents feel?
Luke They were really worried. I wasn’t spending any time with my family or my friends.
Paul So when did things change?
Luke When I saw an old school friend in town. He was shocked by the way I looked. I realised
I had a problem.
Paul So how is your life different now?
Luke Well, I don’t exercise so much. Now I go to the gym once or twice a week, instead of every
day. I also make sure I see friends.
Paul Thanks for sharing your story with us, Luke – and thank you to our listeners. If you need
more information about the issues we’ve discussed today, you can go to our website.

Body decorations
We don’t only wear things to be 1 fashionable / in trouble.
Sometimes there are 2 in common / religious reasons for the
things we wear, e.g. when some women cover their heads.
Certain things we wear also show that we are 3 a health risk /
rebellious, for example, when young people go against their
parents’ wishes. Young people started having nose and other
body 4 insults / piercings for this reason, but after a while,
these became fashions, and no longer symbols of protest.
Many fashions also have a long history: using coloured ink to paint 5 needles / tattoos on the skin, for
example, was first popular 5,000 years ago!
In the past, people believed that body decorations were a symbol of how much money you had. Wearing
gold rings in your ears showed your 6 wealth / victory. And sailors believed that one day, when they
died, their gold earrings would pay for their 7 weddings / funerals. The ancient Egyptians believed that
making holes in your tongue for jewellery, showed that you could 8 nod / communicate better with the
gods.
So, when your parents tell you that your idea of body decoration is ‘nothing new’ – they are actually
right!

Bananas and big companies Help for banana farmers
Growing bananas at low cost
– +
Many people in the Windward Islands near Haiti are banana farmers.
Most bananas are grown on small family-run farms. Banana farmers often spend more than
half the money they earn on pesticides, and on packing and transporting their bananas from
the farms to the faraway harbours.
In recent years it has become much more difficult for farmers to earn enough money to
support their families. The price of bananas is very low. The big company farms are able to
grow bananas very cheaply, so the small farmers find it difficult to sell their crops for good
prices.
Some of these farmers now sell their bananas to the Fair Trade market. This means that they
get a fair, fixed price for their bananas. They also get extra money to spend on projects that
help the whole village. Georgina, who now runs the local Fair Trade group, has been a banana
farmer for 15 years – the last four with a Fair Trade organisation.
She says, “The best thing about joining Fair Trade is that the price of our bananas doesn’t go
up and down. We know we are always going to get a good, fixed price. The extra money Fair
Trade gives us helps the village a lot. We’re thinking about trying to open a school and improve
the roads around us. We have also been able to use fewer pesticides on our crops, and that’s
good for the environment.”
She adds, “I hope people will buy more Fair Trade bananas and ask supermarkets abroad to
sell Fair Trade products. If more people want our products, we will be able to sell more, and
earn more.”
Fair Trade can’t solve all the farmers’ problems in the Windward Islands, but it is helping
some of them to earn enough to survive.

Everyone should have the same right to a good education, but Britain’s top
universities still accept more students from private schools than state schools.
Things are most difficult for students from black working class backgrounds.
Universities say that fewer people from these backgrounds apply for their courses.
They should ask why! If universities did more to help non-white students and those
from state schools, more of them would apply to go there.

In many ways, things have improved a lot for working women over the last 50 years.
Today, women can do any job. However, things are still not equal. On average,

jobs go to men. Only six percent of the largest European countries have female

Ageism means treating someone unfairly because of their age. It makes me really
angry. If I’d been younger, I would have got a promotion* at work last year. I am

That the most popular book was from a series.
That people like reading all kinds of books.
That there are different kinds of readers.
Presenter Welcome to Book Hour. This week’s guests, Maddie and Jay, recently did some
interesting research into reading habits. Maddie, can you tell us about what you did?
Maddie Yes. It began as a really simple survey. We asked everyone in our year group to write
down their five favourite books.
Jay We wanted to find out which types of books teenagers enjoyed reading, but the
results were more interesting than we expected.
Presenter Why was that?
Jay Well, we found out that there were different types of readers.
Presenter Can you explain what you mean?
Jay Yes, of course. If someone’s favourite book was from the Hunger Games series, for
example, they included books from other series on their list, such as Noughts and
Crosses. We call these people Series Lovers.
Maddie And if their favourite book was a classic, like Great Expectations, by Charles Dickens,
they included other classics on their list. These are our Classics Fans.
Presenter Interesting! So how many different groups did you find?
Maddie Five. The other three groups are Booklisters, History Lovers and Bookworms.
Presenter What are Booklisters?
Jay Booklisters don’t want to read a book unless they already know that it’s going to
be well-written and interesting. They look at lists of recommended books from
newspapers, magazines and bookshops. If these books have won awards, that’s
even better.
Presenter Oh, I see. And History Lovers must love history books – so do they only read non-
fiction?
Maddie No. They might also read historical novels, such as The Book Thief, which is set in
Nazi Germany. Or Things a Bright Girl Can Do, which tells the story of three teenage
girls who join the suffragettes.
Presenter Those both sound like fascinating books. Perhaps I’m a History Lover! So finally,
what’s a Bookworm?
Maddie A Bookworm reads absolutely everything! This is the group I belong to. I love
classics, trilogies and historical fiction.
Jay Me, too! I’m in the same group!

The Hate U Give, by Angie Thomas, is a book about race, inequality and violence
by the police. It tells the story of Starr Carter, an African American girl who
witnesses the shooting of a childhood friend by a white police officer.
16-year-old Starr has two lives: she lives in a poor mostly black neighbourhood, but goes to a
private school where most of the students are white. Her life changes when her friend Khalil is
shot. The media present Khalil as a criminal and the officer who killed him as a good man.
Starr doesn’t tell anyone from her school that she knew Khalil. She fights with her friend, Hailey,
when Hailey makes negative comments about Khalil. Starr’s white boyfriend, however, finds out
that Starr was with Khalil when he died and supports her.
Starr fights for justice* for Khalil, but the police officer who killed him is not sent to prison. The
ending is not negative, though. Starr promises to remember Khalil and continue her fight for
him.
I think that the book is very powerful because it makes you think about important issues. It is
inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement and the author’s own experience of living as a
young black woman in the USA.
The story is gripping*, moving and even funny in places. It is written in a very realistic way.
The characters, especially Starr, are easy to believe. The book deals with tragedy, bravery and
fighting for what you believe in. I would recommend this book to anyone.

CORNBURY FESTIVAL
Last weekend my elder sister and I went to the Cornbury Festival, near Charlbury in
Oxfordshire. We live in Oxford, so Charlbury is quite nearby. I didn’t realise that more than
10,000 people would come, though – from all over the country! It was the highlight of our
summer holidays. The three-day festival started on Friday morning. Most people camped there
for the whole weekend, but we just went on Sunday. This was the first time I’ve been, although
the festival has existed since 2004. It’s a really great event. The atmosphere is friendly and
comfortable – and the park the festival’s held in is beautiful.
The best thing about Cornbury is that it’s a festival for everybody – rich and poor, young kids
as well as their parents and grandparents! You can see lots of bands and artists that you
already know and love, and get to know some new ones, too. I’d listened to Scottish singer-
songwriter Amy Macdonald occasionally before, but this was the first time I’d ever seen her
on stage – and she was great. And guess what? I got an autograph! I met her after she left the
stage – as I was chilling out on the grass, enjoying some lunch. Honestly, I was so surprised
to see her sitting near me – I just forgot to be embarrassed and went up and asked her to
write her name on my T-shirt! After that, I also took a selfie with her! :-)
Last but not least, we listened to Alanis Morissette. Even when it started raining (as it usually
does at English festivals!), the crowd just put on water-proof jackets and went on singing and
dancing! The last band even sang a song they had created for Cornbury – which we were all
still singing on our way home. It went something like: “We’ll see you at Cornbury next year”.
Well, that’s definitely my intention!
