l. General
Belore starting up the machine read the following instructions care{ully.
Always turn the hand wheel in the direction o{ the arrow'
1. Cleaning
The machine must be thoroughly cleaned i{ necessary with petrol, All oil must be removed from between the thread tension discs. ,All
olaces marked in red should be oiled with the highest quality machine oil. All positions shown in red must be oiled daily and twice a week
the carft tracks and carn rcllers.
2. Erection
The machine should be levelled by means of a spiril level placed on the cam shalt and then screwed to the floor. Check again with the
spirit level and i{ necessary level up agaifi.
3. Drive

It will kie {ound easier to thiead the braider before placing it into position (nS. t).
7. Check whether:
a. The points of the stabbers ancl necdles are exactly opposite one another and the needles are exactly in the centre of the slots in the
t"I saddle plates and in the stiiching bar. Correct by packing uncler the {ront machine Jeet.
$. b, Whcn a sharply creased sheet is placed on the saddle, the needles pierce exactly in the centre of the iold.
c. The grippers pass behind the sewinq needles with a distarrce o{ about'frl'flr11 belween theniif necessafy adjust cone "O" (ng.1).
8. Thread (fig.1)
-Ihe
For e'rery sewing rreedle arid every braider stitch a cop of thread is required. iront cop holders arc for tho braider stitches and the next
two rovr's "2" arrd "3" for the sewing slitches. Machine l-S has no 3rd row. ii 7 or I stitches are required then use the 2 outside holders
of 1st row for the sewing needles.
L Threading Up
Threaclirrg up is done in accorclance with fi9.1. The thread is drawn through tlre lension disc which lies direclly over the sev.ring needle,
Tlre threads are ylassed througlr the steel tongues of the stitching bar and knotted together by hand.
The reels ol tape should trirn casily. The ends of the tape are dravrn betvreen the tension plaie o{ the supporl and on tirrougir the slots oi
the tape guides (f)9.7). The tapcs can either be hraided only or'sewn and braided on the sections (fi9.2 and 3).When sewing through the
t:pe it shauld be noted that only lhe sewing needle passes thfough the tape and r.rot ihe hook needle. Be{ore sewirrg the l'irst section 2
,,vooCen book blocks must be slid into positiorr and the tapcs clanrped to tire sanre by means of the clanrps supplied,
lll. Sewing
All posilions nrarked ir red and the carns should be greased daily; lhe grease boxes sSould be {illed fronr time to iifi€.
Before settinq the ntachine in nrotiorr artd particularly in cold weather, it sltouid be tested that the gripper shait move s lreely- Old dried nil
shoulcl be rerrroved with a few clrops of petrcil ort the slta{t, and oiled;lhis prevents any chance o{ the needles or gripper points being
da rrraged.
1. Safety measures:
Before turrring the nrachirre by hand or rnaking arry adjustrrrents vrhatsoever (e.o. change the size, etc.) slip the safety catch on llre right ma-
chine fool to the left. Only when sewing with power is it to be nroved to the riglrt. When turning the nrachirle over by hand press lhe treadle
dovsn to release the brarke hut the safety catch must be to lhe left. To preverrt accidents note lhis carefuily.
2. Sewing
First lurn a few sections through the machine by hand and adjust the table support so that the sewn sections touch it lightly. in order lo
do this release wing !rut "H" (tig. 1) and tutn hand wheel "1". Ds not have the table too higlh otherwlse the books will bunch together;if ii
is too deep, the books will hang lradly, and both give bad sev, ring.
ll all is corrcct rlove the salety lever io the right and scw on power. After the last section of each book has been sewn a "waste stitch"
must be mäde, that is, one revolution oi thc machine must be made without a section on the saddle. AJter the "waste slilch" carrv on as
{ollows:
The length o{ the loosened thread should .be tbe vridth of the wooden block. lt is better to have this slightty longer than shorter as other-
wise it mav cause thread breakases,
4. Thread Tensions
lllachines i-S and ll-S (fig. l): The tension discs "V" are individuaily adjustable; first loosen tension screw "Y" and turn the nut "Z":
clockwise less tension: anticlockwise more tension"
.for normal thickness ol thread Nos.20-50 whereas very thin thread No. 60 requires
Thread tension springs shown with "0.8" can be used
a spring rnarked "0.75".
5. Adiustment of Sewing
To obtain more or less iighlness of sewing adjtrst:
a. The sheet presser bar: the pin "t" (ng.10) pushed againstiisei{ give looser sewing andviceversa; in generafwith thin paperthepresser
bar should press backwards more than with thick paper.
b. The side brackets which act on the wooden blocks by means of screw "q" (fiS. 1).
c. The spring ol the bracket slide on the book support table.
b. Hook needle will not catch the thread Hook not open sufficiently or bent Excha nge
Grippers lilt too much or too little l-S and ll-S: adjust pin "p" (fi9. 1)

Automotic Cutting-Off Device FK l-S, FK tl-S, FK lv-S ond FK tlv-S
Generql
With the Autotnotic Cutting Device of the Book Sewing Mochine, the sewing threod
between the books is cut, leoving q sufficiently long end to the some for further proces-
si ng.
The Cutting Device is set in motion by the lefr hond tresdle.
It is importont thoi the positions rnorked in red ore oiled doily.
Operstion
After the losf section. oi every book is sewn o woste stitch is mode, i.e. the soddle mokes
o complete movemenl wi thout feeding o section.
Äs the iable moves forword on this wqsfe stitch press the left treodle downwords. This
mokes the knife bar with knives move sidewoys which cotåEes up ihe sewing threcd. When
sewing the nexf section ihe ihreqd winds round the knife'1'. The threod however, should
not be cui ot once os the ends would be ioo short. For this reoson the knives ore noi
shorpened qt ihe front.
By sewing further sections the threod looped round the knives slides bockwords to the
shorp position af the knife when the some is cut.

1. Loosen the kn*r1ed *ut N*. i and press the same backwards.
2. Leosen €efew right and left 2 and draw bars 5 and S apari.
3. The backing material is to be pushed frcm the top in between the two bars 5 and € and
drawn dewnwards between the guide plates {if necessary use the threading hook}.
4" Tapes. Eefore teeding these betwecn ihe bars 5 and 6 they should be passed through the
