Maximum-Normal-Stress Theory
(MNST)
A part subjected by any combination of loads will fail
whenever the greatest positive principal stress exceeds the
tensile strength limit
This theory works best for fibrous brittle materials, some
glasses, and reasonable well for brittle materials (e.g. grey
cast iron)
Expected failure by a separation fracture perpendicular to
the main stress direction
Closure:
2
v = 1 = 0,5 x + y + ( x y ) + 4 2

Maximum-Shear-Stress Theory
(MSST)
A part subjected by any combination of loads will fail
whenever the maximum shear stress exceeds the tensile
strength limit
A good theory for predicting the yielding of ductile materials
or compression loading with brittle materials
Expected failure by a sliding fracture
Closure

Distortion-Energy Theory (DET)

von Mises Criterion
Valid for ductile materials with plastic deformation before
failure or dynamic loading with failure by fatigue
Greatest accuracy of all recognised theories
