gegen die Anhanger des Procopius kampfte (XXIV 10, 366) und
daf er sich als ,,per lilyricum magister armorum" gegen den
Bau von Festungen im Quadenlande jenseits der Donau ab-
lehnend verhielt (XXIX 6, 371), eine kluge Voraussicht, wie sich
spater zeigte, als der Bau der Kastelle eifrig betrieben wurde und
die Veranlassung zu einem verheerenden Einfall der Quaden gab.
Ob Equitius durch seine Weigerung - oder vielmehr ,, passive
Resistenz" - in Ungnade fiel oder ob er auf seinem Posten be-
lassen wurde, geht aus der Schilderung Ammians nicht hervor.
Ich glaube jedoch, dafi wir eher den zweiten Fall annehmen
duirfen, und dafi unser Equitius mit jenem identisch ist, von dem
Ammian, ohne Titel oder Charge zu nennen, erzahlt, dafi die um
einen Waffenstillstand ansuchenden Quaden ,in consistorium
Equitio vadente sunt intromissi" (XXX 6, 375).
Der Nachfolger des Equitius durfte S e b a s t i a n us 1) gewesen sein.
Dieser war zuerst Dux Aegypti, nahm als Comes an dem Perser-
kriege lulians teil (XXIII 3; XXV 8, 363; XXVI 6), ging im Jahre 368
- wiederum als Comes (Domesticorum?) - cum Illyriis et Italicis
numeris, quos regebat", nach Gallien, wo im Feldzuge gegen die
Alamannen Valentinian die Mittelkolonne, Iovinus und Severus die
beiden Seitenkolonnen befehligten (XXVII 10). Die Posten der
beiden Praesentales waren durch die genannten Generale besetzt;
Magister Equitum per Illyricum war Equitius; als Magister
Equitum per Gallias hbtte Sebastianus nicht illyrische und italische
Truppen unter sich gehabt. Er kann daher damals noch nicht
Magister, sondern tatsaichlich, wie Ammian angibt, nur Comes ge-
wesen sein. Anders wird es sich jedoch im Jahre 375 verhalten
haben, wo er freilich auch nur als Comes bezeichnet wird (XXX 5).
Bald darauf, nach dem pl6tzlichem Tode des Kaisers Valentinian,
sieht sich der Magister Peditum Merobaudes betreffs des Sebastianus
zu einer besonderen Vorsichtsmafiregel veranlafit (XXX 10): ,, utque
erat secrete mandatum, Sebastianum principis adhuc ignorantem
excessum, longius mandavit, quietum quidem virum et placidum,
sed militari favore sublatum, ideo maxime tune cavendum."
Fassen wir nun alle diese Angaben zusammen, so ergibt sich
folgender Verlauf der Begebenheiten: Equitius war auch nach 371

dann noch damit beschaftigt ist, die Stellungen ain Passe von
Succi zu befestigen, trifft als sein Nachfolger der Comes M aurus
ein (XXXI 11).
Aus dieser Beschreibung geht hervor, dafh Frigeridus ,, cun
Pannonicis et transalpinis auxiliis", also mit illyrischen Truppen
abgesendet wurde. Er stand im Range dem Comes Domesticorum
Richomeres zumindest gleich, wahrscheinlich jedoch tiber ihm. Da
nun der zweite Comes Domesticorum Mallobaudes war, die uibrigen
Comites aber unter dem Comes Domesticorum rangieren, so muf3
Frigeridus Magister gewesen sein, und zwar, nach seinen Truppen
zu schliefien, Magister Equitum per Illyricum und somit derNach-
folger des Sebastianus.
Maurus, der beim Passe von Succi als Nachfolger des
Frigeridus eintraf, wird als Comes bezeichnet (XXXI 11) und wird
es vermutlich auch wirklich gewesen sein bis zur endgultigen
Ubernahme des Amtes von seinem Vorganger.
Hierftir spricht auch die Tatsache, dafi im Jahre 365, als bei der
Reichsteilung die oben genannten 5 Posten und die beiden sich
aus der Teilung neu ergebenden eines zweiten Magister Peditum
