entwickelt, in dem ich seit zwanzig Jahren meine Musik
schreibe. In dieser Reihe ist Summa das strengstgebaute
und verschlOsseltste Werk", sagte Arvo Part im Jahre 1994.
Schon der Titel ist eine VerschlOsselung des lnhalts - dem
Werk liegt der Text des Glaubensbekenntnisses in latei-
nischer Sprache zugrunde. Die ursprOngliche Version tor
vier Stimmen a cappella entstand 1977, die Fassung tor
Streichquartett erst 1991. Die Komplexitat verbirgt sich in
diesem Stock hinter groBter Einfachheit. Die zugrunde
liegenden Regeln bewirken, dass auf der Oberflache ein
Kreislauf standiger Veranderung entsteht, wohingegen die
Tiefenstruktur in sich ruhende Ordnungen besitzt.

Mit dieser Ausgabe liegt nun auch eine Version tor

Blockflotenquartett vor, die in zwei Besetzungen spielbar ist,
einer hohen Version tor Sopran - Alt 1 - Alt 2 - Tenor und
einer tiefen Version fOr Tenor - Bass 1 - Bass 2 - GroBbass.
Die im Notentext eingetragenen Phrasierungszeichen richten
sich nach der textlichen Gliederung der Gesangsfassung.
Weitere Atemzeichen sind je nach Instrument und
Tempo erforderlich und mOssen vom Spieler
selbst gefunden werden .

'I have developed a highly formalised compositional
system, which I have been using to write my music for
twenty years. Summa is the most strict and enigmatic work
in this series', said Arvo Part in 1994. The neutral title itself
embodies the essence of the content as the work is based
on the text of the Latin Credo. Originally written for four
a cappella voices in 1977, the string quartet version dates
from 1991. The great simplicity of the piece masks its
complexity. The underlying rules ensure that on the surface
a cycle of continuous change is created while the deep
structure possesses an order of stillness.

This edition adds a further version for recorder quartet.

It can be played in two instrumental combinations, a high
version for soprano - alto 1 - alto 2 - tenor and a low
version for tenor - bass 1 - bass 2 - great bass.
The phrase marks in the notation follow that of the text in
the vocal arrangement. Additional breath marks are
required according to the instrument and tempo
and should be worked out by the player.

En 1994, Arvo Part declarait : « J'ai elabore un
systeme de composition extremement formalise, qui
sert depuis vingt ans de cadre a mes compositions.
Summa est l'reuvre la plus fermee, la plus strictement
construite de cette serie ». Le titre lui-meme contribue a
verrouiller le contenu : l'reuvre repose sur le texte du
credo en latin. La version originale, pour quatre voix
a cappella, a ete ecrite en 1977, et la version pour
quatuor a cordes en 1991 seulement. La complexite de
cette piece se dissimule derriere la plus grande
simplicite. En permanente mutation a la surface,
cette musique obeit a des regles qui donnent a sa
structure profonde une grande serenite.

Voici maintenant un arrangement pour quatuor

de flutes a bee, en deux tessitures differentes : une
version aigue, pour soprano - alto 1 - alto 2 - tenor, et
une version grave pour tenor - basse 1 - basse 2 -
contrebasse. Les indications de phrase correspondent
au texte de la partition chantee originale. Chaque
musicien pourra les completer par des
respirations supplementaires, en fonction
du tempo et de son instrument.
