MITTLEREN REICHS. MIDDLE KINGDOM.
Es ist das Ausgezeichnete des ägyptischen
Geistes, daß er als dieser ungeheure
Werkmeister vor uns steht. Es ist nicht
Pracht noch Spiel noch Vergnügen, was er
sucht, sondern es ist der Drang, sich zu ver·
stehen, der ihn treibt, und er hat kein
anderes Material und Boden , sich über das
zu belehren, was er ist, und sich für sich zu
verwirk·liehen, als dies Hineinarbeiten in den
Stein; und was er in den Stein hineinschreibt,
sind seine Rätsel, seine Hieroglyphen. Der
Hieroglyphen sind zweierlei; die
eigentlichen, die mehr die Bestimmung für
die Äuße·rang in der Sprache und die
Beziehung auf die subjektive Vorstellung
haben; die anderen Hieroglyphen sind diese
ungeheuren Massen von Werken der
Architektur und Skulptur, womit Ägypten
bedeckt ist. Wenn bei anderen Völkern die
Geschichte aus einer Reihe von
Begebenheiten besteht, wie z.B. die Römer
in mehreren Jahrhunderten nur dem Zweck
der Eroberung gelebt und das Werk der
Unterwerfung der Völker vor sich gebracht
haben, so sind es die Ägypter, die ein ebenso
mächtiges Reich von Taten in Kunstwerken
ausgeführt haben, deren Trümmer ihre
Unzerstörbarkeit beweisen und größer und
erstaunenswürdiger sind als alle Werke der
sonstigen alten und der neuen Zeit.

Kegel oben herausragen.
Zwei solcher Dienerinnen sind im Grab
gefunden; das Gegenstück, jetzt in
New York, ist abgebildet Schäfer,

Der Grabtempel Mentuhoteps III. bei Der-el-
bahari. 11. Dynastie.
Ganz unten die zwei Umfassungsmauern des
Hofes vor dem Tempel. Rechts
Löcher im Boden, zum Einpflanzen von
Bäumen bestimmt. Darüber die Rampe zur
ersten Plattform. Reste von drei Pfeilern der
unteren Pfeilerhalle.
Die weiße Mauer der Plattform ist neu
aufgesetzt. Auf der Terrasse die Reste der
Pfeilerhallen, die den Mittelteil des Tempels
umgeben. Dieser ist in Pyramidenform
zu denken, deren Stumpf, aus Bruchsteinen
aufgeschüttet, in der Mitte sichtbar ist.
Links in den Felsen hinein die Hallen des
Sanktuariums.

The funerary temple of Mentuhotep III at
Der-el-bahari. 11th Dynasty.
At the bottom the two enclosing walls of the
courtyard in front of the temple. On the right
Holes in the ground, intended for planting
trees. Above the ramp to the
first platform. Remains of three pillars of the
lower pillared hall.
The white wall of the platform has been
rebuilt. On the terrace the remains of the
of the pillared halls surrounding the central
part of the temple. This is in the form of a
pyramid
The trunk of the pyramid is visible in the
centre, heaped up from quarry stones.
On the left, the halls of the sanctuary are set
into the rock.
