maligen Backhauses, das die Glasfassade durch-
stößt und dessen verfallene Südseite die Architek-
ten offen ließen. Unter dem so entstandenen
Vordach fällt der voluminöse, im Zuge der Bauar-
beiten wieder instand gesetzte Backofen ins Auge,
der heute für Kurse und Workshops genutzt wird.
Auch mit den übrigen Relikten des Altbaus
praktizierten Jo Taillieu Architecten eine Strategie
des selektiven Erhalts. Die alten Ziegelwände blie-
ben größtenteils sichtbar und wurden an einigen

This strategy of selective
preservation was also applied to
the indoor relics. Old brick walls
are mostly visible and ­stabilized
in some places with wall plates
and ring anchors made of rein-
forced concrete. They were also
insulated, b

Stellen mit Wandscheiben und Ringankern aus
Stahlbeton stabilisiert. Außerdem erhielten sie eine
Dämmung, denn im Gegensatz zu den „Häusern im
Haus“ blieb der Großraum unter der Glaskonstruk-
tion als thermischer Puffer unbeheizt. Wenn die Tem-
peratur dort zu hoch steigt, öffnen sich automatisch
Fenster im Dach sowie große, schwarz gerahmte
Schiebeelemente in den Glasfassaden und sorgen
für eine Querlüftung.
Die großformatigen, diagonal montierten Faser-
zementschindeln auf den neu errichteten Giebel­
dächern und am Obergeschoss des Bauernhauses
unterstreichen den Patchworkcharakter dieser
­Architektur, in der jedes Element sein Eigenleben
hat. Ein Beispiel hierfür ist auch der Raum für die
Pelletheizung, für den die Architekten einen zylindri-
schen Fertigteilschacht aus Stahlbeton mitten im
Erdgeschoss platzierten. Passend dazu wählten
Jo Taillieu Architecten ein nachgerade didaktisches
Farbkonzept für die Stahlbauteile im Haus: Treppen
sind blau so wie Stützen, Träger und Fluchttüren
­feuerwehrrot lackiert. Gemessen an deren Anzahl
und an den beiden Fluchttreppen, die dem Glas-
haus auf der West- und Ostseite angeschoben sind,
dürfte in dem Bildungszentrum sicher niemand zu
Schaden kommen.

element has a life of its own.
This is also evident in the room
containing the pellet heating
system: a cylindrical precast re-
inforced concrete shaft installed
in the middle of the ground floor.
A somewhat didactic colour
concept was selected for the
steel components in the build-
ing: stairs are painted blue and
the columns, beams, and es-
cape doors are fire-engine red.
Judging by their number and
the two escape staircases
­attached to the glass house on
its west and east sides, it’s safe
to say that no one will come to
any harm.
