A number of years ago Paris implemented an

consumption to 50 kWh/m2 per annum. The 2 Laden
metropolis has initiated a number of pilot pro- 3 Technikraum

such project is the “L´ îlot Fréquel-Fontarabie” 6 Nebeneingang
in the 20th arrondissement. On one part of the 7 Zufahrt Tiefgarage

site a new building with 20 subsidised apart- 8
ments has been completed. Thanks to the
staggered building heights, despite the high 8
density of the neighbourhood, it was possible Site plan

ea. The generously dimensioned interior court- scale 1:500
yard serves, on the one hand, as communal

are oriented north-south; the kitchens and 4 Private garden

wall. Ventilation occurs via two small court- 7 Access to parking
yards. The living spaces, in contrast, face garage

ciency. Winter gardens are integrated in the
double skin facade. The latter consists of win-
dows with large wood frames – in part as fixed
glazing, in part as sliding doors: these serve as 5
climate control buffers. At regular intervals a
concrete slab is employed in the place of the 5
inner glass element. These thermal storage
walls, which are dark grey with fluted surfaces,
absorb the radiant heat that passes through
4
the outer layer of glass; they later release it in-
to the living spaces. Thus, the thermal storage
elements play a central role not only in the tec- 4

tonics, but also in the climatology. In summer,
aluminium-coated curtains situated behind the
6
outer layer of glass reflect the sunlight, and
with it, the heat. Fresh air enters the flats
through openings in the north facade. Load- 3
bearing columns, some of which are integrat-
ed in the facade, combined with flat ceiling a

decks, make it possible to forgo downstand a

beams. Therefore, air can circulate freely. a

However, the residents also play an active 2

part in ensuring the success of the energy 3
concept: through their daily interaction with
1
the outer skin they must guarantee that the
interiors not become overheated. Erdgeschoss / Ground floor
