Die kleine Werkstatt in der Calle Blasón ist eines der wenigen
industriellen Gebäude, die im Zentrum von Madrid noch erhal-
ten sind. Durch die höheren Anforderungen an Lärm- und Emis-
sionsschutz mussten die meisten Betriebe an den Stadtrand
ziehen, ihre alten Gebäude wurden abgerissen. Auch die hohen
Preise für Wohnimmobilien erschweren den Erhalt des industri-
ellen Erbes der Stadt. Mit ihrem Projekt Elements for Industrial
Recovery machen es sich die Architekten von Burr Studio zur
Aufgabe, diese Altbauten vor dem Verschwinden zu bewahren.
Wie viele der verbliebenen Gewerbebauten erstreckt sich
die Werkstatt bis tief in den Innenhof des Blocks. Bei einer rei-
nen Wohnnutzung ist die Gebäudetiefe jedoch gesetzlich auf
12 m beschränkt. Da das Haus aber als Atelier und Wohnung
für den Schriftsteller Juan Ramón Silva Ferrada umgenutzt wird,
konnte es erhalten bleiben. Das Grundstück ist von einer massi-
ven Bestandsmauer umgeben. Die Architekten legten die zwei
ursprünglichen Innenhöfe frei und zonierten den Grundriss mit
einer Porenbetonsteinmauer, die alle Installationen aufnimmt.

buildings that still survive in the centre of Madrid. Increasingly
stringent requirements with regard to protection from noise
and emissions have forced most such businesses to move to
the outskirts of the city and their old buildings have been demol-
ished. In addition, high residential property prices make it diffi-
cult to preserve the city’s industrial heritage. With their project
Elements for Industrial Recovery the architects from Burr have
made it their mission to prevent more of these old buildings from
disappearing.
Like many of the surviving industrial buildings the workshop
extends deep into the interior of the block. Where the use is
purely residential building depth is restricted to 12 metres, but
as this building was converted to be used by the writer Juan
Ramón Silva Ferrada as both a studio and residence it could be
retained. The plot is surrounded by a massive existing wall. The
architects recreated the two original courtyards and zoned the
plan by using an aerated concrete wall in which all the services
are integrated. This wall separates the more private areas, like

Bad von Garage, Atelier, Wohn- und Essraum. Eines der beiden
Schlafzimmer öffnet sich zu dem kleineren Hof, während der
Wohn- und Essraum dem größeren Freibereich zugeordnet ist.
Dort entstand eine Fassade, die den ursprünglichen Rhythmus
der Pilaster aufnimmt. Die Außenmauern sind innen wie außen
mit einem rauen Spritzputz versehen, der dem Gebäude eine
sehr rohe Anmutung verleiht.
Im Inneren dominiert die schlanke Stahlkonstruktion der
alten Werkstatt den Raum. Sie wurde weiß lackiert und mit eini-
gen Streben zur Aussteifung ergänzt. Dank der großen Raum-
höhe konnte eine Galerieebene für das Studio eingezogen wer-
den. Eine filigrane Stahltreppe führt hinauf in den kleinen Raum,
der sich mit einem blau lackierten Balkon zum Innenhof öffnet.
Die Treppe ist auf Podesten an der Betonsteinwand aufgelagert,
die mit ihren Rücksprüngen und Nischen auch Halterungen,
Arbeitsplatte und Einbauten aufnimmt. Materialien wie Edelstahl
in der Küche, blaue Mosaikböden und hölzerne Schubflächen
veredeln die rauen Strukturen der Betonsteine, des Spritzputzes
und der Estrichböden. SD

courtyard, while the living / dining room faces onto the larger out-
door space. The new facade to this yard repeats the rhythm of
the original pilasters. The external walls are covered both inside
and outside with a coarse sprayed render, giving the building a
very raw appearance.
The slender steel structure of the old workshop roof domi-
nates the interior. It was painted white and a number of struts
were added to provide bracing. The considerable height of the
space allowed a gallery to be made that serves as a studio. A
delicate steel staircase leads up to this small space, which has a
blue-painted balcony opening onto the courtyard. The stairs
rests on landings made in the concrete block wall which has
recesses and niches to accommodate brackets, worktop, land-
ings and built-in fittings. Materials such as the stainless steel of
the kitchen units, the blue mosaic flooring and the sliding
wooden surfaces enhance the raw structure of the concrete
block, the sprayed render and the screed floors. SD
