Schweißverfahren
Jeder Schweißprozess ist gesondert zu qualifizieren. Kombinationsprozesse (z.B.
badsicherung
What is WPS?
The welding procedure specification is the actual working instructions to a welder. Originally, welding procedure specifications
were only specified for use in Germany when fabricating particular welded components in nuclear reactor construction, for
example. Since the introduction of the new European standards, a welding procedure specification must always be drawn up
for all the suitability procedures mentioned above before the start of m
anufacturing. The welding procedure specification (WPS)
must contain all the necessary specifications of the welding tasks and how they are to be carried out.
Whereas the term “welding process” refers to actual welding, the term “welding procedure” includes all the activities that affect
the welding result. In accordance with DIN EN ISO 15609, this includes, among other things:
Preparing the parts for welding
Gathering the parts for welding
Preheating
Welding
Post-weld work on the welded joint (e.g. grinding)
Heat treatment (in-process and/or concluding)
The welding procedure specifications can apply to a specific thickness range of the parts to be welded as well as to a range of
parent metals and even to the welding consumables. Some manufacturers may additionally prefer to draw up work instructions
for each specific task as part of individual production planning.
What is WPQR?
The welding procedure test is verification of the practical suitability of the WPS. For this test, welding is carried out using the
parameters to be recorded in the WPS in the presence of a notified body (TÜV, SLV and others); after this, inspection is carried out
in accordance with the applicable standards. After successfully inspecting the test pieces, the recorded welding parameters are
set out in the form of a Welding Procedure Qualification Record (WPQR) and issued as a certificate in the manufacturer‘s name.
When the WPQR is issued, the WPS is considered to be qualified and it can be used in practice. Since the WPQR has a relatively
wide scope, it can be used to qualify further WPSes within this scope. The scope of a welding procedure qualification record
(WPQR) results as follows:
Recognition of a welding procedure test that a manufacturer has received applies to welding in workshops and on sites that are
subject to the same technical and qualitative monitoring of this manufacturer.

a If impact energy requirements are specified, the upper limit is 12 mm if no Charpy impact tests have been carried out.
NOTE 2 If a fillet weld is qualified by an inspection on a butt weld, the scope is the basis of the weld thickness of the inserted
weld metal.
a For special applications only. Each fillet weld thickness must be verified separately by a welding procedure test.

D ≤ 25 ≥ 0,5 D (25 mm min.)
NOTE For hollow profiles, D is the dimension of the narrower side.
a D is the external pipe diameter or the external diameter of the connecting pipe.
Welding process
Each welding process must be qualified separately. Combined processes (e.g. TIG/MAG) can either be qualified by two (or more)
individual welding procedure tests in the respective processes or by one combined process welding procedure test.
Combined process welding procedure tests must not be used for qualifying an individual process.
Depending on the process, the scopes are extended or limited, for example with regard to the gas composition, the welding flux
and the wire feed.
For welding processes 15, 141 and 311, note that welding without consumables does not qualify welding with consumables and
vice versa.
Welding in an inspection in any welding position on a panel or a pipe qualifies for all welding positions except PG (vertical down)
and J-L045 (45° slope, vertical down). For vertical down, a separate welding procedure test is necessary.
The scope of the joint or weld type is the same as the joint type that is used in the welding procedure test. H
owever, the fol-
lowing extensions or restrictions apply, for example:
Butt welds qualify fully and partially penetrated butt and fillet welds. Fillet weld inspections must be required if fillet welds
are predominantly welded in production.
Butt welds on pipes also qualify pipe connections with an angle >= 60°
T-butt joints qualify only T-butt joints and fillet welds
One-sided welds without weld pool backing qualify both-sided welds and welds with weld pool backing
