Athletic Club in New York fertig. In seinem Aufsatz Delirious New York beschreibt
gemeinschaftlichen Angeboten also, „a social condenser generating and
intensifying desirable forms of human intercourse.“ (Koolhaas, 1978)
“Built in 1931, its 38 stories reach a height of 534 feet. Large abstract patterns
of glass and brick make its exterior inscrutable and almost indistinguishable
from the conventional Skyscrapers around it.
This serenity hides the apotheosis of the Skyscraper as instrument of the
Culture of Congestion. The Club represents the complete conquest -floor
by floor - of the Skyscraper by social activity; with the Downtown Athletic
Club the American way of life, know-how and initiative definitively overtake
the theoretical lifestyle modifications that the various 20th century European
avantgardes have been insistently proposing, without ever managing to impose
them.
In the Downtown Athletic Club the Skyscraper is used as Constructivist Social
Condenser: A machine to generate and intensify desirable forms of human
intercourse.” 1

« It was an explosion
Gimnasio Maravillas of people having fun. » 1
„...I visited the building on a crisp sunny Sunday morning in late November.
I had arranged the meeting with the school administrator H. Atilio Proenza
González. The school is in a gentle suburb of Madrid, I walked there from my
hotel, a journey of about 1 hour through quiet Sunday morning mass going dog
walking suburbs.
We went down stairs and through a door into the world of Alejandro de la Sota.
He pointed me toward the handrail detail designed not to snag clothes which he
demonstrated, I wasn’t looking though….
We were in the world of de la Sota and there were people everywhere, people
and steel frames and wood wool ceilings. A multitude of teenagers were running
around in fancy dress, pirates, Greek goddesses, Vikings, soldiers, Roman
centurions, below us a football game was in progress. As we travelled around,
up down and around we met swimmers below and basketball players above
outside, on top. It was an explosion of people having fun.
If I thought that Señor González was in love with the quiet world of the smart
Nineteenth Century school it was nothing in comparison to the ecstatic
passion he held for the Arte Povera school of de la Sota, basic materials,
exposed structure and people people people. It seemed like the secret he kept
downstairs out of sight of good society, the affair with the unsuitable mistress.
Shaking his hand, I gave him a bottle of nice Cava and was back out into the
quiet street. Still quivering from complete over excitement...

The year 1982 saw the arrival of a new and striking architectural landmark
in Brazil, in the city of São Paulo. It was the Centro de Lazer Fábrica da
Pompéia (Pompéia Factory Leisure Centre), now known simply as SESC
Pompéia. An architectural complex in some ways shocking, combining
a red-brick building that had housed a drum factory since the 1920s –
well proportioned, in the style of British factories – with three huge and
unconventional concrete towers connected by aerial walkways.
At that time we were still digesting the modernist project of Brasilia and
its aftermath. We were at the end of a 20-year military dictatorship, which
contributed to an architectural mediocrity mirrored in works that lay
outside our own culture and reality. And it was precisely at this moment,
in this environment, that SESC Pompéia arrived, making waves across the
still waters. It was a form of architecture that evaded easy classification.
Strange? Ugly? Out of scale? Brutal, but also delicate? It was certainly
something that seemed beyond the possible universe, unattainable by the
hands of contemporary architects. It was a bomb, a shock.
Lina Bo Bardi, who had suffered ostracism for almost ten years, as a
victim of the military regime and also of the conventional architectural
outlook, surprised everyone with this gift to São Paulo. Paris had
just seen the inauguration of the Pompidou Centre, an extravagant
architectural model that caused a stir among students and young
architects, and which would soon become a point of reference. It
symbolised an escape route from a modernist model already somewhat in
decline. Comparisons were therefore inevitable with the new cultural and
sports centre that had sprung up in the district of Pompéia: they shared
an industrial idiom; abrupt changes of scale; colours, many colours; and,
principally, ‘strangeness’ in the context of their surroundings. And yet,
despite all this, the two proposals were very distant and dissimilar in their
origins, ideology and results.
