je Quer- schnitt eine Probe, jedoch mindestens zwei
Proben.
Dabei durfen Erzeugnisse mit annâhernd gleichem
Querschnitt in derselben PMeinheit zusammengefa3t
werden.
3 Probenentnahme und Probenvorbe-
reltung
3.1 Wenn nichts anderes vereinbart wurde, gilt hin-
sichtlich der Probenentnahme und der zu pñifenden
Schliffflache folgendes.
3.1.4 Die Proben sollen so entnommen werden, da0
sie fñr die jeweilige Lieferung kennzeichnend sind.
3.1.2 Fur eine Pr0fung der Carbidausbildungsmerkmale
- au8er der Carbidzeiligkeit nach den Reihen 6 und 7, die
nur an Lñngsschliffen geprñft wird - kann f0r die Lage der
Schliffflâche je nach den Umsténden entweder die
Lgngs- oder die Querrichtung zweckmâ5ig sein.
Die je Probe zu prñfende Schliffflâche soll, sowe"it méglich
und zweckmâl3ig, 100 mm* gro3 sein (normierte Flache
F}. lhre Lage im Quer- oder Lñngsschliff kann je nach
den Erfordernissen verschieden sein und sollte der
Prñfstelle dberlassen werden.
Das Bhd 1 stellt einige Moglichke'iten an Rundstahl
dar. Wenn die zu pr0fende Merkmalsart eine
bestimmte Richtung, Lage und/oder von F
abweichende Gré0e der zu prñfenden Schliffflâche
erfordert, sind diese Be- dingungen zu vereinbaren.
Die vorstehenden Hinweise gelten sinngemâ3 auch
f0r Vierkantstahl, Breitflachstahl, Blech, Band, Rohre
und Schmiedestucke.
3.2 Die Proben werden geschliffen und poliert und
m'it einem geeigneten Atzmittel (im allgemeinen Losung
von Salpeters8ure in Alkohol oder, bei Geftigen
entsprechend den Reihen 1 bis 4, Lésung von
Pikrinsâure in Alkohol) geâtzt. Fur eine elektrolytische
Atzung gendgt eine nur geschliffene Pr6fflache.
3.2.1 Vor einer Pñ 'ung auf Ausbildung des
Carbidnet- zes nach Bildreihe 5 und der
Carbidzeiligkeit nach den Bildreihen 6 und 7 sind die
Proben im Regelfall zu harten, und zwar von der
Temperatur, die der Mitte der in der Norm
angegebenen Spanne entspricht. Als Haltedauer auf
Hartetemperatur werden rd. 10 min empfohlen.
Die gehArteten Proben werden mit einer Losung aus
etwa 90 ml Alkohol und 10 ml konzentrierter
Salpetersaure so stark geâtzt, da3 die Carbide sich
hell von der dunkel

3 Sampling and preparation of speci-
mens
3.1 If not otherwise agreed, following applies to
the sampling and the microsection to be examined.
3.1.1 Sampling shall be carried out in such a way that
the specimens are characteristic for the
respective delivery.
3.1.2 For the examination of the characteristics of the
carbide structure - apart from the carbide banding to
the diagrams 6 and 7 examined only in longitudinal
micro- sections - either the longitudinal or cross
direction may be appropriate for the position of the
microsection depending on circumstances.
The microsection per specimen to be examined shall
have a size of 100 mm*, if possible and practicable
(standard surface F). Its position in the cross or longitu-
dinal microsection can differ depending on
requirements and should be left to the discretion of
the test centre.
Fig. 1 shows a few possibilities on rounds. If the
char- acteristic to be examined requires a special
direction, position and/or size of the surface to be
examined deviating from F, these conditions must be
agreed to.

The above remarks apply obviously also to squares,
wide flats, sheet steel, strip, tubes and forgings.
3.2 The specimens are ground and poWshed and
etched with a suitable etching compound (generally
a solution of nital acid in alcohol or for structures to
the diagrams 1 to 4, a solution of picric acid in alcohol).
For electrolytic etching a ground surface will be
sufficient.
3.2.1 Before examination for the structure of the
carbide network to series of diagrams 5 and for carbide
streaks to series of diagrams 6 and 7, the specimens
are generally to be hardened and that from the tem-
perature generally corresponding the middle of the
margin given in the standard. Some 10 min. are re-
commended as critical range for hardening
temperature.
The hardened specimens are so heavily etched in a
solution of about 90 ml alcohol and 10 ml concentrated
nitric acid that the carbides form a clear contrast

Eine Prdfung anhand der Bildreihen 5, 6 und 7 nach
Tiefâaen im gegluhten Zustand kann ebenfalls vereinbart
werden.
4 Bildreihen
Die zu diesem Prñfblatt gehérende Bildreihentafel umfa0t
sieben einzelne, nebeneinander angeordnete Bildreihen,
die jeweils ein kennzeichnendes Merkmal der Carbidaus-
bildung in einer den Erfordernissen angepaRten (mit
Ausnahma einer Raiha) zehnstufigen Unterteilung ent-
halten. Die Vergré5erung ist jeweils so gewâhlt, daI3
neben einer ausreichenden Aufldsung eine sinnvolle
Gré8e der Untersuchungsflache je Blickfeld gegeben ist.
Die einzelnen Reihen stellen folgende kennzeichnenden
Merkmale (Merkmalsorten) dar:
Reihe I - den Flâchenanteil von freiem Ferrit im Ferrit-
Perlit-Gef0ge. (Mit dieser Reihe wird das Gesamtgef0ge
eines Stahles und - mittelbar - sein Kohlenstoff-
Massenanteil angesprochen.)
Reihe 2 - die Gré3e (den Durchmesser) kugeliger
Carbide (die kennzeichnende Gro3e herrscht im einzelnen
Bild jeweils vor).
Reihe 3 - den Flâchenanteil von Perlit im Gef0ge von
Perlit und kugeligen Carbiden.
Reihe 4 - die Menge und den Einformungsgrad von
Korngrenzencarbiden (Carbidnetz) im gegl\ihten
Zustand. Reihe 5 - die Menge und den
Einformungsgrad von Korngrenzencarbiden
(Carbidnetz), in der Regel Mr den gehârteten Zustand.
Die Korngrenzencarbide in den Bildern derselben
Stufen- kennzahlen der Reihen 4 und 5 sind nicht
gleichwertig.
Reihe 6 - Carbidzeilen in ,geschlossener" Form.
Reihe 7 - Carbidzeilen in „aufgelockerter“ Form.
Die zweiziffrigen Kennzahlen der einzelnen Bilder setzen
sich aus der Kennzahl fñr die jeweilige Reihe (Merk-
malsart, 1. Stelie) und der Kennzahl Mr das jeweilige Bild
(Merkmalsstufe, 2. Stelle) zusammen.
5 Prñfung und Auswertung der Prñfer-
gebnisse
5.1 A!lgemelne Hlnwelse
5.1.1 Wenn die zu pr0fende Flache kleiner als die
Schliffflâche ist, wird sie zweckmâoigerweise in ihren
Umrissen gekennzeichnet.
5.1.2 Die Schliffproben werden unter dem Mikroskop mit
der dem Abbildungsma3stab der Bildreihen entsprechen-
den Vergré3erung betrachtet. Die Beobachtung kann
entweder im Okular oder an dem auf eine Mattscheibe
projizierten Schliffbild erfolgen. Das zu
beobachtende einzelne Feld (Blickfeld) soil die gleiche
Grége wie die jeweiligen Vergleichsbilder haben (rd.

4 Series of diagrams
The table of diagrams pertaining to this leaflet
includes 7 various, adjacentty arranged, series of
diagrams which contain a characteristic feature of the
carbide structure in 10 classifications, fitting
requirements (excepting one series). The selected
magnification ensures apart from a sufficient resolution
that there is an acceptable size of the examined
surface per field of vision.
The individual series represent the following character-
istics:
Series 1 - the share of free ferrite area in the ferrite-
pearlite structure. (This series refers to the total
struc- ture of a steel and indirectly to its carbon
contents.)
Series 2 - the size (the diameter) of globular carbide.
(the characteristic size prevails in the respective figure)
Series 3 - the share of pearlite area in the structure
of pearlite and globular carbides.
Series 4 - the amount and the degree of
coagulation of grain limit carbides (carbide network),
as annealed. Series 5 - the amount and the degree
of formation of grain limit carbides (carbide network),
generally for the hardened condition.
The grain boundary carbides in the diagrams of the
same identification numbers for classification of
series 4 and 5 are not equivalent.
Series 6 - carbide streaks in ,closed“ form.
Series 7 - carbide streaks in .looser" form.
The two digit identification numbers are composed of
the number for the respective series (kind of
characteristic, 1st digit) and the number for the
respective diagram (kind of characteristic, 2nd digit).
5 Examination and evaluation of re-
sults
5.1 General remarks
5.1.1 If the area to be examined is smaller than the
microsection, it is recommended to mark its outlines.
5.1.2 The microspecimens are observed under the
microscope at the magnification corresponding to the
scale of the series of diagrams. The observation can be
conducted either in the eye-piece or the micrograph
pro- jected to a ground-glass screen. The individual
araa to be observed should have the same size as the
respec- tive comparative areas (about 80 mm dia). It is

messer). Zweckrnél3ig ist eine Begrenzung des Blickfeldes
auf dieses Ma3 durch einen Teilkreis im Okular oder
auf der Mattscheibe.
Bei der Zuordnung des Geftiges in einem Blickfeld ermit-
telt man dasjenige Bild der Bildreihe, das dem
beobach- teten Gefñge hinsichtlich des jeweiligen
Merkmals am nâchsten kommt.
Die Prñfung der Carbidausbildungsmerkmale wird im
allgemeinen in der durch die Bildreihentafel
gegebenen Aufeinanderfolge der Reihe vorgenommen.
Entsprechend der jeweiligen Stahlsorte und
Abmessung kann die Prñfung einzelner Merkmalsarten
(nach einzelnen Bildrei- hen) unterbleiben. Im
Zweifelsfall sind hieruber Verabre- dungen zu treffen.
5.1.3 Die beobachteten Carbidausbildungsmerkmale
und ihre Stufen werden - in der nachstehenden
Reihenfol- ge und durch einen Punkt voneinander
getrennt - jeweils mit der Kennzahl f0r die betreffende
Reihe (1 bis 7) und der Kennzahl f0r die betreffende
Stufe bezeichnet, zum Beispiel 1.3, 2.6. Eine Angabe
gebrochener Zahlen f0r die Kennzeichnung von Stufen
(zum Beispiel 2,5; 5 ’/ usw.) soil vermieden werden.
5.2 Prgfung und Auswertung
5.2.1 Wenn nichts anderes vereinbart wurde, wird
der Ferritanteil nach Reihe 1 nur durch Ubersichts-
beobachtung ermittelt.
5.2.2 Wenn nichts anderes vereinbart wurde wird bei
den Reihen 2 bis 7 folgendes Pruf- und Auswerte-
verfahren angewandt.
AFt leder der Proben wird die gesamte Flâche F so abge-
sucht, da3 man schnell einen Eindruck von der
vorherr- schenden Bild-Kennzahl und/oder von deren
Hochstwert erhâlt.
Auf diese Weise wird bei der Prufung nach der Reihe
2 nur der vorherrschende Wert, bei der Prufung nach
der Reihe 3 der vorherrschende Wert und der
Hochstwert, bei den Reihen 4 oder 5 im allgemeinen
nur der vorherr- schende Wert, bei den Reihen 6 und
7 werden lm Re- gelfall nur die Hochstwerte ermittelt;
die erhaltenen Werte werden angegeben.
5.2.3 Den ermittelten Weften sind inn allgemeinen
folgende Angaben zuzuordnen:
die Stahlsorte und gegebenenfalls die Schmelzen-
kennzeichnung;
die Abmessungen, aus denen die jeweiligen
Proben entnommen wurden;
der jeweilige Wârmebehandlungszustand, notigenfalls
der besondere Behandlungszustahd der Proben;
- die jeweilige Lage der Pr0fflâche inn Querschnitt
und notigenfalls deren Gro0e (sofern es sich nicht
um die Flache F handelt);
das Verfahren der Prufung und Auswertung.

is necessary first to determine the micrograph of the
series which resembles most the observed structure
with regard to the respective characteristic.
The examination of the characteristics of the carbide
structure is generally conducted in the sequence of the
series given in the table of diagrams. According to
the respective steel quaI'cy and dimensions, the
examination of individual characteristics (to various
series of dia- grams) may be om'med. In case of
doubt, an agreement should be arrived hereon.
5.1.3 The characteristics and classes of the carbide
structures examined are marked in the following se-
quence and separated by a dot, with the
identification number of the respective series (1 to 7}
and the identifi- cation number of the respective
class, e.g. 1.3, 2.6. Fractional numbers for the
marking of classes (as e.g. 2.5; 5 ’/z etc.) should be
avoided.
5.2 Examination and evaluation
5.2.1 If not otherwise agreed, the share of ferrite to
series 1 is only established by a rough examination.
5.2.2 If not otherwise agreed, the following examina-
tion and evaluation system is used for the series 2 to 7.
The total area F on each of the specimens is inspected
in such a way that you get a quick impression of the
dominating identification number of the diagram and/or
of its maximum value.
In the examination only the dominating value is
deter- mined in this way to series 2, in the
examination to series 3 it is the dominating and
maxlmum value, for the series 4 or 5 generally only the
dominating value, for the series 6 and 7 generally only
the maximum values; the obtained values are stated.
5.2.3 Generally following information is to be added
to the values obtained:
- the steel quality and possibly also the heat
identifi- cation;
the dimension range for sampling;
the respective heat treatment condition, if necessary
also the condition of specially treated specimens;
the respective positon of the microsection and, if
required, also the size (provided it is not the sec-
tion F};
the method of examination and evaluation.
