Eine geschwungene Fläche aus glattem Beton verbindet die
freistehenden historischen Fabrikhallen der ehemaligen 12
­Glashütte in Meisenthal zur räumlichen Einheit des Kulturzen­
trums Site Verrier. Die fließende Dach­landschaft schwingt sich
über ein neues Eingangsgebäude, neigt sich, wird zum öffentli­
chen Platz, ohne die gestalterische P ­ räsenz der Bestandsbau­
ten zu beeinträchtigen. In der Mitte befindet sich eine organisch
geformte Freifläche, die als zentrale Plaza und Kommunikati­
onsort genutzt wird. Hier treffen sich die Besucher und orientie­
ren sich auf dem Gelände.
Die Tradition der Glasverarbeitung in den Nordvogesen
geht bis ins 17. Jahrhundert zurück. In der Glasschleiferei der

roofscape displays a swinging character and covers a new
entrance building, where it curves downward and becomes a
public space, without impairing the prominence of the existing
buildings. An open space with organic outline is located in its
centre and functions as a plaza and a place for communication,
for meeting and orientation for the visitors.
Traditional glass working in the Northern Vosges region
reaches back to the 17th century. In the glass grinding work-

1969 stillgelegten Glashütte von Meisenthal wurde in den 1990er-
Jahren ein internationales Zentrum für Glaskunst eröffnet. Die
Erweiterung des Museums gestalteten die New Yorker Architek­
ten So-Il in Kooperation mit dem Pariser Büro Freaks architecture
nach dem Wettbewerb 2015. Die verbindende Struktur aus Beton
hebt sich klar von den historischen Bauten ab. Das Bestandsen­
semble umfasst das Glasmuseum, eine multidisziplinäre Kultur­
halle und das internationale Glaskunstzentrum (CIAV). Letzterem
sind zwei der Neubauten angegliedert, während das neue Ein­
gangsgebäude unter dem Betondach mit Shop und Cafeteria die
offene Seite des Komplexes schließt.
Die Architekten verstehen die zwischen die Altbauten
gegossene Ortbetonfläche als Referenz an die Glasproduktion,
deren Tradition im Kulturzentrum vermittelt und weiterentwickelt
wird. Auf die künstliche Dachlandschaft setzten sie filigrane
Stahlgeländer und machen die Fläche als öffentlichen Platz
nutzbar. Im Neubau unter dem Dach verweisen vielerorts ver­
bliebene Ziegelmauern auf den Bestandsbau der ehemaligen
Fabrikanlagen.
An den Eingangsbereichen und Erschließungszonen
kragt das große Betondach über die Fassaden hinaus und
schützt die Besucherinnen vor der Witterung. Auch die bei­
den neuen Werkstattgebäude, die sich um den alten Fabrik­
schlot gruppieren, sind aus Beton. Gerundete und scharf­
kantige Dach- und Gebäudekanten betonen den frei formbaren
Charakter des Materials. Bei einem dieser neuen Gebäude

1969, an international centre for glass art opened its gates
in the 1990s. The expansion to the museum was designed
by New York based architects So-Il in cooperation with
the Parisian office Freaks architecture, following a competi-
tion in 2015. Their design features a connective concrete
­structure that is clearly distinguished from the historic build-
ings. The ensemble of existing volumes includes the glass
museum, a multi-disciplinary cultural hall and the International
Glass Art Centre (CIAV). The latter operates two of the new
buildings. The entrance structure covered by the concrete roof
features a shop and a cafeteria and encloses the open side of
the complex.
The architects view the in-situ concrete surface poured
between the existing buildings as a reference to glass produc-
tion. Its tradition is communicated and further developed in
the cultural centre. They placed filigree steel railings on top
of the artificial roof landscape in order to allow its use as a
­publicly accessible plaza. Brick walls were preserved in
many areas inside the new building beneath the roof and serve
as references to the old factory facilities. Above the entrance
areas and circulation zones, the large concrete roof cantilevers
beyond the facades and offers visitors protection from the
weather. The two new workshop buildings that are grouped
around an old factory smokestack also consist of concrete.
Curved and angular roof and building edges emphasize the
freely mouldable character of the material. The concrete layer

gebäude wurden an die neuen Nutzungen angepasst und erwei­
tert. Im bisher ungenutzten Untergeschoss des Altbaus, auf der
Ebene der neuen Plaza, liegen die Zugänge der beiden Veran­
staltungsräume, die miteinander verbunden werden können und
so Platz für rund 3000 Besucher bieten. Dort finden sowohl Kon­
zerte als auch vielfältige andere Veranstaltungen rund um das
Thema Glaskunst statt. Der größere Saal liegt in der eindrucks­
vollen ehemaligen Fabrikhalle mit Zugängen zur Plaza, die als
zusätzliche Open-Air-Fläche genutzt werden kann. SD

In the existing buildings, the functional program and access
were adapted to the new uses and expanded accordingly. In the
heretofore vacant lower level, which matches the elevation of the
new plaza, visitors find the entrances to the two event spaces,
offering seats for roughly 3000 occupants when joined together.
Concerts take place here as well as a diverse range of other
events that focus on the topic of glass art. The larger of the two
halls is located in the impressive old factory structure and fea-
tures entrances facing the plaza, permitting its use as an addi-
tional open air event space. SD
