The importance of the pickling for the metalworking and processing industry is based
on the fact that it is used at least once, very often but several times, for pretreatment
of the metal surface before further treatment in almost every production process.
After a heat treatment, after welding, soldering or after a prolonged storage, metal
surfaces must be pickled as a rule, if they are to be phosphated, blackened,
electroplated, hot-dip galvanized, enamelled, temporarily protected or preserved.
They must also be cleaned by means of pickling.
In the production of semi-finished products such as strips, sheets, wire, pipes and
rods fabricated of steel, stainless steel, non-ferrous metals, descaling by pickling is
of central importance.
Like all modern production technology, pickling must also meet important
requirements with regard to cost-effectiveness, quality and environmental
compatibility. In order to meet these requirements, production planners, controllers
and others involved in the production process need not only an overview of existing
processes and possibilities, but also concrete indications for their practical activities.
This book is intended to fulfill this task.
