Quellenmaterials auch die Frage nach der Kontinliitat der Tradition in der
Geschichte der Lamentationsvertonungen zu stellen sein wird.
Fast zu gleicher Zeit mit den beiden bekannten Sammelwerken, den Lamen-
tationesHieremiaeProphetaevon 1549 (verlegt bei Montanus & Neuber) und
den Piissimaeac sacratissimae lamentationesZeremiaeProphetaevon 1557 (ver-
legt bei Le Roy & Ballard), ersebien in Sevilla ein Druck mit Vihuela-Tabu-
laturen, den Miguelde Fuenllana unter dem Titel Orphenica Lyraherausgegeben
hat6. AuBer weltlichen Intavolierungen enthalt der Druck auch geistliche, von
denen eine LamentaSion de Moratesa cincobetitelte unsere besondere Aufmerk-
samkeit erweckt7. Die Fuenllana-Fassung der Lamentation w-onCristobal de
Morales, deren Vokalvorlage in einer mexikanischen8 und einer spanischen
Handschrift uberliefert ist9, hat die Besonderheit, daB der liturgische cantus
firmus in Mensuralnotation notiert ist, der vollstandige Satz hingegen in spa-
nischer Lautentabulatur. Obgleich die Struktur der funfstimmigen Lamenta-
tion von Moralesin der Tabulatur von Fuenllana vollstandig erhalten geblieben
ist, bekommt det lnstrumentalpart im Verhaltnis zum Vokalpart eine neue
iFunktion:in der klanglichen Realisation wird die instrumentale Reduktion des
polyphonen Satzes zur Begleitung des solistisch vorgetragenen cantus firmus10.
Dieses Verfahren, das Einstein zutreSend als ,,abgeleitete Monodie" oder
,,Pseudomonodie" bezeichnet hat, bildete wahrscheinlich die GruncUagevon
AlincenzoGlalileisVersuchen, einen neuen, expressiven Gesangsstil zu schreiben.
Da Galilei von der antiken Bedeutung des NVortes,,Monodie" ausgegangen zu
sein schemt (Euripides beschreibt sie als Nachahmung und Darstellung tiefsten
Schmerzes und verweist auf die sog. ,,Threnos"11),wird er nicht zufallig seinen

lieri ist der lesponsorialartige Wechsel von Chor- und Solopartien, wobei die
hebraischen Buchstaben und die Jerusalenverse durchgehend chorisch gesetzt
sindl6. Die monodischen Partion, die haufiger fur Sopran und Tenor als fur
Alt oder BaB geschrieben sind, entsprechen in der Melodik wie in der Harmonik
denen in Cavalieris Rappresentazionedi aninza e di corpo. Palisca macht mit
Recht darauf aufmerksam, daB die Kompositionstechnik in den Lamentationen
mit den Anweisungen in Galileis ungedruckten Kontrapunkttraktaten uberein-
stimmtl7. Die monodischen Teile der Lamentationen sind meines Erachtens
auch eher zweistimmige Kontrapunkte als Monodien im Sinne Monteverdis,
obgleich die BaB-Stimme beziffert ist. Selbst dort, wo der Text einen beson-
deren musilialischen Ausdruck zu fordern scheint, wie bei denWorten: ,,plorans
ploravit in nocte" (Threni I: 2), ist die melodische Linie trotz der formelhaften
Anwendung des passus duriusculus weniger vom Text her konzipi.ert als von
der Unterstimme, zu der sie im Sinne des punctus contra punctum angelegt ist:

Erwahnt sei auch, daB Cavalieri dieWorte: ,,oppressa amaritudine" (Threni
I: 4) dreimal komponiert hat; die dritte Fassung, die mit ,,henarmonico" uber-
schrieben und mit kleinen Schragstrichen uber bestimmten Noten versehen ist,
wird fur eines jener Instrumente bestimmt gewesen sein, auf denen die antiken
Tongeschlechter spielbar waren.

verses wiederholt wird, konnte man von einer Anadiplosis-Figur sprechen.
Mit den vier Lamentationsdrucken von 1668 und 1689 (Anh. Nr. 22, 23, 30
und 31) wird deutlich, daB spatestens seit Cazzatis Wirken an der Basilika
S. Petronio die GLattungder monodischen Lamentation auch in Bologna ge-
pflegt wurde. Da auBer Cazzati auch Cossoni und Colonna an S. Petronio ge-
wirkt haben (teils als Organisten, teils als ,,Maestri di Cappella"), ist anzuneh-
men, daB die Lamentationen, die in den Drucken zu Zyklen von je neun Lek-
tionen zusammengefaBt sind, wahrend der Matutinen des ,,sacrum triduum"
in S. Petronio aufgefuhrt wurden25.
Auffallend an den Lamentationen der Bologneser Komponisten ist ein ge-
steigerter A5ektausdruck. Im Unterschied zu den romischen Komponisten, die
den Horer durch einen bestimmtenVortragsstil, die esclamazione lany¢ida(Cac-
cini) zu erschuttern suchten, ,,objektivieren" die Bologneser den Affektausdruck,
indem sie den stilelanguido(Poglietti) zum Kompositionsprinzip erheben.
Den Affekt des Trauerns und des Klagens erreichen sie sehr oft durch An-
wendung von musikalisch-rhetorischen Figuren, insbesondere der ,,saltus" und
,,passus duriusculi"; vgl. etwa folgende Stelle aus der dritten Lektion von
Colonna (Anh. Nr. 31):

Auffallend ist auch die bewuBte Verwendung des Rhythmus. Cossoni bei-
spielsweise gebraucht haufig, meist in der Paenultima der Kadenz, eine rhyth-
sche Formel, die zusammen mit einem melodischenVorhalt eine Art ,,Seufzer-
rhythmik" ergibt (vgl. Anh. Nr. 22):

Auch ist bei den Bologneser Komponisten die Tendenz zu beobachten, den
Jerusalem-Versmusikalisch zu verselbstandigen. Erreichte Stradella noch durch

In der nachfolgenden tbersicht sind die Titel der einzelnen Lamentations-
zyklen normalisiert worden. Die Datierung bezieht sich auf die uberlieferte
Quelle; nur in Einzelfallen (bei Gaetano Venetiano etwa) ist sie mit dem Ent-
stehungsdatum der Komposition identisch.
Die Lamentationstexte sind ausnahmslos den Klagegesangen des Propheten
Jeremias entnommen. Die einzelnen Verse der Klagegesange teilen sich auf die
neun Lektionen der letzten drei Kartage wie folgt auf (vgl. Liber vsualis missae
et ofldofi,Paris, Tournai, Rom, New York 1964, p. 631-637, 692-697 und 754
bis 761):

obetl angegebenen Aufteilung ubereinstimmt. Die Bestimmung des liturgischen
Ortes erfolgte nach den Angaben der jeweiligen Que]le. - Fur die Rubrik ,,Be-
setzung" sind folgende Abkurzungen verwendet worden: C = Cantus, A-A1-
